True. I was a big Sega kid but never had a Saturn (like most people). With no marquee Sonic game or Streets of Rage I thought the whole system was pointless but I've been trying to educate myself on what it had to offer. I'm not into 2D fighting games post-MKII, or RPGs
People have billed it as a 2D powerhouse at the start of the 3D era which is why I asked that question. I want to like it but between my Genesis, PlayStation, and my Dreamcast: what games am I really missing?

I'm so thankful for having a Saturn as a kid which gave me access to many obscure titles.
Now that I'm an adult of course I've played most of the famous all time classics from N64 and Playstation but I seriously doubt people who grew up with those consoles even bother with the Saturn so they are the ones who end up missing out.

Burning rangers is a very arcadey fire fighting game, good fun.

Nights into dreams of course is a good game in general. Some love it, some hate it.

Virtual on is a great mech 3d fighter. It has ports but still fun on the saturn.

Diehard arcade is exactly what it sounds like. Goofy fun arcade diehard game

Bug too is a great slower paced 3d platformer. Its a bit obtuse at first but once you get the hang of it, its chill. Kinda reminds me of garfield for some reason.

Clockwork Knight is a a good game, id equate it to klonoa if i had to make a comparison or tomba.

Mr. Bones is a variety game with a killer soundtrack. You will get filtered and quit and we will make fun of you for it.

Panzer dragoon/zwei, great on rails shooter. Especially zwei which has a lot more complexity than 1.

Panzer dragoon saga is a unique rpg spinoff from the original games. Fantastic game.

Gun griffon is a mech style game that performs well on the saturn. If yoy like mech games this and a few gundam side mission games are worth checking out on the saturn.

Theres quite a bit more, but this is a good mix of things.

I don't care what anyone says the original saturn daytona is a GREAT game. A textbook definition of SOUL. The ONLY argument against it is the gfx (which are fine btw, a bit of pop-in who cares). The colours pop, the presentation is faithful to the arcade and the fps is solid with no dips that throw off your driving, whether there is only your car or 8+ on the screen at once.
Sound -top notch, great original campy music (DAYTOHNAAAAAAA). The cars handle perfectly and the cars have that trademark up and down bounce as they drive and car models just like you remember.
It's a bit barebones track wise (WHY didnt they make mirror versions of all the courses ffs?) but what you get are solid, tight and interesting courses.
Now if you are refering to the 'improved' CE (and jap ce) versions all the ecelebs say is 'better', just dont. Those are legitimately BAD games, they take all the best parts of vanilla daytona (presentation, sound track, handling/physics/ car models) and trade them all in for a slightly better viewing distance.
A fucking travesty to think of how many resources went in to those two versions when they could have been better spent elsewhere. Imagine taking all that time and money and rerouting it towards house of the dead for example, fuck what a crime.

Btw what are your times like, can you beat mine? In before automatic transmission, i'll step up to manual soon.

VF Kids is a fucking blast to play, so yeah. It's sillier than VF2 but has some extra options that help with pulling off more bullshit moves from a controller (which is like a third of Akiras moveset). There's a Kids move where the game automatically does random specials when they will hit for 100%, which makes the game feel a lot flashier (and is the most sureproof way to do Akiras counters, which is the 2nd third of Akiras moveset).
Beyond that you have every character with a separate ending, some which are genuinely funny, and you can unlock and view them in the Options -> Video Room, so the game also has more single player replay value.

There's a few more additions beyond that like some extra hidden backgrounds (Shun vs Shun gets you put in a robot factory that makes Shun Di mechas), and some cheats to play in 1st person mode, with wire frame graphics, or to have Dural with a transparent head that has a fish living in it.

Oh and the game is a bit faster paced than VF2 and fixes that problem where Saturn VF2 had the sound effects cutting off randomly.

In USA, which was DC brightest market, DC had the best launch in history until that point in time.
However in 2000 DC sold less than what it did in the four launch months of 1999, basically the console lost steam right after the launch period.
This happened despite DC being a heavily subsidised console (launched under cost at $199 in September 1999, had its first price cut to $149 in August 2000).
This is why Sega announced Dc discontinuation in January 2001.
They gave all they could but the console was losing steam despite being virtually without competition cause PS2 just launched and had severe stock problems.
Once Sony rectified PS2 stock situation and Microsoft/Nintendo had enter the market with their new gen consoles splashing morer cash than Sega could ever dream the situation was destined to get even bleaker.

This was insane in 1995. Ridge Racer could barely do 12 at 30fps (and they weren't even fully textured, they were gouraud shaded with added decals). If they had cut the car count I'm sure Daytona USA could have run at 30fps instead of the 20fps it generally ran at, but I'm glad they stayed true to the arcade original.

Rushed development definitely hurt the end product though, luckily there are plenty of other excellent Sega produced arcade to Saturn ports available on the system.

Look at the graph again. The DC launched in Japan just over a month before the end of 1998. Sega was already millions of yen in the hole before they sold a single Dreamcast system. The PS1 had been eating Sega's lunch for the past four years. This is what caused them to enter the Dreamcast period without any cash reserves, which they could have otherwise used to ride out the initial losses until the system became profitable (this is how every console manufacturer except Nintendo operated).

And what do you think Sega was doing leading up to that? Spending money on producing Dreamcasts. Selling all of that at a loss at the end of the year is going to tank your earnings.
>They had no cash reserves!
The also could have not sold the system at a massive loss and held off on launching it. Sega of America could have also not nuked their brand and killed their sources of revenue 2.5 years prior to the Dreamcast coming out.

So you can sell it at $300 then when PS2 launches at $300 drop it down. Heck you could have launched at $249 and that still wouldn't have been as devastating.

> Hold off on releasing your console
> While you're losing money hand over fist due to underperforming Saturn sales
You missed the key thing here. This one would require Sega of America not being asleep at the wheel with handling the Saturn. From the graph you can see Sega wasn't losing money on the Saturn, they were simply breaking even. Sure it's not great, but it's something you can recover from. But then Sega of America decided to just kill the Saturn off 2.5 years before the next system was ready. So now the only thing making Sega any money from 97 to the Dreamcast launch was the Japanese Saturn market. That certainly didn't help anything.

The Dreamcast wasn't competing with the upcoming $300 Playstation 2, it was competing with the $129 Playstation. Releasing at $300 would have meant sales would have been significantly reduced.

re: Holding back the Dreamcast launch, that would have been a huge mistake as well. They needed a console to boost sales. The Dreamcast was a hail mary play. It had to be out by the time it launched or Sega's console division (which by that point was already only still around because it was being subsidized by income from Sega's arcade sales) would have been fucked.

Losses also could have been reduced. And again they could have also launched at $249. Dreamcast was a next gen console and was marketed as such. They could have sold it for more. Instead they created a hemorrhage.
>subsidized by income from Sega's arcade sale
Arcades were dying by this point outside of Japan. Again it was the Japanese market keeping Sega afloat at this point.
>>7675518
It wasn't in a great spot sure, but they did have signs of life in 1996 and early 1997. Where you see it flat line is at E3 97 when Bernie killed it prematurely. We can argue how well Saturn could have done with the hand he was dealt, but he still killed it way too early. The Dreamcast wouldn't be ready for another ~2 years. He basically told all his customers to go to his competitors for two years. That ended up hurting the Dreamcast as well.

One thing I've always noticed about shiturn hipsters is how blatantly apparent it is that they very obviously only pretend to like it for contrarianism, and don't even play games.
Anytime any other console or old pc or arcade game is mentioned people will always talk about how they had fun playing it as a kid, or how they would always stay over at friends houses playing certain games, or how they'd stop in at the local arcade to drop quarters in whatever. They'll always have distinct memories and nostalgia of having fun with whatever they're talking about.
But all you'll ever hear from shiturn fags are how it actually had the most vertrex cycles of any console at the time assuming you properly utilized both CPUs and GPUs and did a rain dance under a full moon, or how the shading of a lamp post in the background of a capcom fighter was actually arcade perfect quality unlike the ps1 where its gamma tint was microscopically off. Never do you hear about how you and friends stayed up all night playing saturn games.
It's like the console was complete dogshit and they're all just a bunch of friendless shut in weebs who bought a 25 year old piece of plastic to try to be cool and now spend all their time validating their waste of money to themselves as they play alpha 3 for the 47th time and get KOd by the CPU on stage 2 as they repeatedly struggle to do a qcf to throw a fireball, before waddling over to the $4500 pc their mother bought them, (that they use only to play steam ports of PS3 era JRPGs) and extolling the virtues of whichever japan only release they most recently heard a youtuber talk about and then going on a forum begging for it to be translated so they can actually play it long enough to take a picture of it to post on reddit.

It was actually the Saturn that bled Sega dry because it had too many parts in it due to complicated design because it had to overcompensate when they were shown the Playstation's specs and Sega panicked and had to throw in another CPU because its video chip was too weak. If you'll look at the famous graph that Saturnfags like to post, you'll see their loss had stabilized after they'd killed the Saturn and moved on to the Dreamcast in 1999-2000. I'm thinking of picking up a Saturn and I know I have to pick one of these to play burned games (https://www.play-asia.com/action-replay-4m-auto-plus/13/701b2).). Aside from that, what are some things I should know about the system and some worthwhile games for it?

That cart by itself won't play burned games, it needs to be flashed with Pseudo Saturn firmware. If you're doing it by yourself, it could be a hassle, especially if you have a model 2 which makes the disk swapping trick very difficult. For that same price you can find a pre-flashed Pseudo Saturn cart on eBay.

The legitimate usage of that cart, if you want to pick it up anyway and are curious, is allowing import games to be played on a US console, as well as acting as a memory card for backing up save states. For a bit more, you can also find Pseudo Saturn carts that also have storage for backing up saves like the AR cart.

As for some basic tips for starting out:
-I recommend starting out with a 3D controller, there's lots of games where you'll want to use it and you can toggle off the analog for games where you don't. It's more expensive than the standard controller so try and get it off your to buy list quickly, while standard and 3rd party controllers are cheap and commonplace.
A bundle with a Saturn, regular controller, and 3D controller would be ideal.

-Replace the battery. Yours will most likely come dead, which means you have to reset the clock and save files will be deleted after every power down. Thankfully, the battery is very easy to replace and requires no soldering. You can get the Cr2032 at your local pharmacies or even gas stations for $3. If you're lucky the seller will already have replaced it for you. You'll get about 4-5 years of life on each battery.

-Some classic games that most people here will recommend: NiGHTS, Sonic Jam, Panzer Dragoon, Saturn Bomberman, Magic Knight Rayearth, Dragon Force, Albert Odyssey, Daytona USA, Wipeout, Hexen, lots of others, just go through the thread really.

Is the one listed in Aliexpress decent? That software can be upgraded right?

>> No.7696141

>>7695914
The aliexpress cart looks like the better option, as it has the memory backup with it as well as the RAM extension. The ebay cart is just the standard Kai with the extra RAM. Frankly it's more important to be able to back up saves than to have the extra ram, since not so many games require the expansion. But in all honesty, all you really need is the plain Pseudo Saturn Kai cart, which will be cheapest of all of them. The memory backup is really only useful if you have a dead battery or if you run out of internal memory, otherwise you can just use the internal to save everything.

>> No.7696171

>>7696124
You can't upgrade unless the cart you're trying to flash already has all the features you want. So if you flashed the AR cart, it would have all those features since it has the chips inside for it. But your bare minimum cart won't have the hardware to do it.

I wouldn't recommend this since you don't already own the cart, but I had already owned the AR cart before Pseudo was released. I decided to flash it, but I couldn't because the model 2 was very difficult to pull of the disk swap trick. So what I ended up doing was buying the cheapest cart, I used it to load the firmware flash disk, then I swapped carts, flashed the AR cart so it had all the features, then flipped the red cart for my money back. Made about $10 from it.

>>7695865
>>7696171
>>7696141

Basically the one on the playasia link is decent because I can upgrade it and has a big ram card. The only downside is that I have to do the swap disc thing to install the firmware (which I don't really mind doing) and I can't have back up saves. If so, I don't mind picking up the AR cart.

>> No.7696327

>>7696196
Make sure you get a model 1 if you want to do the disk swap. Not only is the lid trick easier to pull off, but the window of time to swap the disks is much longer than on the model 2. It's near pixel perfect timing on the model 2 to pull it off.

How much of a hassle is it to properly burn Saturn discs? I know some people have issues with disc burners being too fast or some shit. I was thinking of picking up a Saturn and just burning the discs because fuck how much some of these games cost.
If push comes to shove I suppose I can just plug my laptop into my backup crt with a converter and just emulate, but I'd definitely prefer to use the original hardware.

No. The 3D controller has the same inputs only with the option to redirect the D-pad controls to the analog pad. The 3D controller will work on all games, but not all games support the analog pad, while all games can be played with the D-pad. A very large chunk of games support analog.

There's definitely a lot of games where you'll prefer the 3D controller. You can toggle which input you're using for either more sensitive or more precise control. When I started off the 3D controller was the only controller I used, though now I go back and forth between the standard model 2 and the 3D depending on the game.

Bought a Saturn with a known disc reading issue for pretty cheap. Disc drive has a weird issue where it will read a couple of games perfectly fine, while others either have longer load times, music cut out, or only being recognized as a CD. After replacing the laser, setting the pot at the right voltage, making sure the spindle is at the right height, and taking to a few Saturn enthusiasts, it seems like there may be a capacitor or 2 that's gone bad in the saturn. I don't mind doing the work to solder, but am I better off just buying another Saturn? I'm getting a satiator for the thing anyways so maybe it's not a big deal?
