I never liked the music seemed too meandering. Like someone just set their casio to string ensemble and smacked some keys.
"It sounds like an orchestra!"

There's a lot more interesting things going on then someone banging on a casio. The way the instruments emulate reverberation and vibrato is rarely seens in SNES games. Yuzo Koshiro worked on this, the same guy who did the music in Streets of Rage.

Doesn't mean the execution or composition is particularly interesting.

He did similar lack-luster soundtracks for the Oasis games. At least in Legend of Oasis it was ambient enough to not matter much but it was equally aimless and boring.

I liked the original's ability to break up the platforming and boss battles with the RTS section. Sure Actraiser's strategy sections weren't difficult, or even requiring of any clear thought, but they could've fixed it in the sequel. Or hell, just left it as is.

They really should not have considered this a sequel since it's a precise rebuild of the first game's plot. With only a bit more effort it could've been it's own game or slight additions to make it a true sequel. As it is, the game feels a bit rushed.

I hated the SIM parts in Actraiser. I was happy to see them gone in the follow up

>> No.763506

The city-building aspect of the first game was my favorite part. It was both relaxing and stressful, and it was fun to watch your cities grow. It made you really care about the setting and townspeople in a platforming game.

I never bothered with the second one, since they removed that. I figured it'd just be like the first game, minus my favorite part.

I enjoyed them since they were refreshing and made the gameplay feel varied. The combat in Actraiser two is significantly better, so I'm just wondering why they didn't do the same with the RTS.

I know what you mean. When the music is too orchestral, it gets kind of forgettable. It all sounds the same and kind of blurs together. ActRaiser 2 has an impressive soundtrack, but it's not very memorable because it's too grandiose.

I think that modern videogames suffer from the same issue: all soundtracks are epic orchestrated pieces and it all sounds the same. Emphasis is made on instrumentation instead of rythm. Although not very memorable, ActRaiser 2's soundtrack was not nearly as forgettable as the music of most modern video games.

>> No.763974

>>763961
Orchestration or orchestral style has nothing to do with why those soundtracks suck. They suck because they are bad motion picture style scores. You'd hear the same sort of boring music in movies, too.

Anyway, the gummi ship (I typoed) is a interplanetary space ship that can be customized. A cool idea, but the execution of it in KH1 was a dull space shooter and was by far the weakest part of the entire game. KH2 polished it up a bit and generally made it nicer and a bit more fun.

They should've done the last stage better by making it a full level stage instead of a repeated boss fight. Last boss was underwhelming, just a huge non-moving sprite. There weren't anything transformations, scene changes, nothing. Would've been epic if Tanzra did something awe-inspiring.

>> No.764784

You're not going to get a good time playing one frame at a time. If you only pick the action that looks best right now you'll lose time in the future. It's like solving a maze. You'll get a much better time if you plan ahead with a map than if you always pick the exit that takes you towards the goal.

Are you a gamer or just an Angry Birds casual? Actraiser 2 isn't really that hard of a game even at hard mode. Compared to many other action games (like super ghouls n' ghosts and Jim Power), it's actually easy once you memorized the patterns.
