Now started Xenogears.

Thank you based /vr/ for making me want to play it again.

Picture related: I just left Dazil and stole a motorbike.

So far, I must admit I'm playing the game equipped with:
- Nostalgia Goggles
- Hype Gloves
- Zelda OoT shirt

So yeah, I'm a bit biased into the hype. Still, I am having fun with the combat mechanics, the story is engaging(Citan seems to know too much and he won't spill the beans).

Not technically a missable item, but you can only get it late game if you miss the first chance:
Ether Doubler, buyable from Nisan. Expensive but doubles the damage of Elly's Aerods attack for no cost (it's an Ether attack that costs 0 Ether, so doubling Ether cost doesn't matter). Ether Doubled Aerods is probably the best attack in the game.

There is one missable item that is pretty useful.
Late game... on the second disk, maybe. Or pretty close.
There's a boss battle where it is going to self destruct.
YOU MUST DEFEAT IT BEFORE IT SELF DESTRUCTS.

Then equip the item you get from the battle and go fight the slugs in the forest on disk 2. They drop the best item in the game. Especially for Citan's badass motherfucker self.

You have to "wrestle" it from a self-proclaimed RPS champion. There are five houses in the whole village so you shouldn't have too much trouble finding him.

Oh yeah, RPS stands for "Rock Paper Scissors". And you have to beat him five times in a row.

That city is from the Zeboim era ~4000 years before the game, who had technology and culture similar to present real world, perhaps a little more advanced. Emeralda was created by Kim, a previous incarnation of the Contact. Humanity at the time had a short lifespan and 30% of the population was unable to produce offspring due to genetic damage (including Elly). Kim was researching nanotechnology to repair that genetic damage. Miang sponsored his research in order to further her own agenda of making the then-weak humans more fit to be body parts of Deus, but Kim rebelled when he found that out, and thus Miang incited nuclear war and wiped out 90+% of the population.

I just booted up my endgame save to find out. With two Power Magics, the Missile Pod and Graviton Cannon only do about 2500/3000 each, but on foot I did 6000 with a Robo Kick with one EtherDoubler.

It's tough to judge, but I think she could probably be a force against a fight like the Elements on foot.

In general, nothing amazing. Everyone knows Elly and Emeralda are the only ones really worth using Ether, and honestly later in the game I think you're better off just using Deathblows.

One special option that doesn't actually suck: Billy's Buntline options. If you buff him, you can get close to the damage limit. With the rest of the characters' Ethers and Options, the multipliers are so pitiful that even if you give them equipment they are still not worth using.

Fei's Chi isn't terrible, but it's almost never his best asset except early on if you equip him right. Also, one of his Weltall-2 abilities, Flaming Hell, has a 7.5x multiplier, which sounds like it could be abused, but in the long run it's probably more efficient to just run System Id.

If you equip Chu-Chu right, she's good for gear dungeon crawling. Your overall power output is lower, but you can last longer because she can heal gears. Like, when you first get to Deus and don't have any Angel Armor yet, you can waste tons of fuel very early on in the dungeon just from getting hit so hard and having to use Frame HP. And if Chu-Chu herself loses all her HP? Simply heal her up outside combat and her gear HP will be full again.

Rico doesn't suck that hard. There are points in the game where he is roughly as effective as any other member. Early on, his gear is very powerful. I mean, it's not even possible to lose to Gebler in Kislev because they just can't damage his gear, even the Hecht.

If there was anyone that needed an extra arc, it was Rico. Preferably late game when Kislev starts getting destroyed and he'd have to confront his father.

Xenogears is Episodes 2-5 out of 6. Xenosaga 1-3 is a re-imagining of what would have been Episode 1 of Xenogears. Same concepts, same names, same timeline, similar overarching story, just in a different universe with different characters. If Xenosaga had gone as planned, Episodes 3-4 would have been a re-imagining of Xenogears itself.

Episode 2 is the time of Abel, episode 3 is the time of Kim, episode 4 is the time of Lacan, and episode 5 is the time of Fei. Originally, it was planned for these four episodes to be a multimedia project, but that got scrapped, and Takahashi decided to put them all in one game, with more focus on episodes 4 and 5.

The underlying issue behind the entire story of Xenogears is the "Time of the Gospel," which isn't explained either in game or in Perfect Works. There's no explanation to why there's a time limit, and what exactly Deus's motivations beyond resurrecting itself were. Xenosaga brings an explanation for this to light.

Nothing at all is known about episode 6, but it probably would have dealt with the Time of the Gospel, and the potential death of the universe.
