Goldeneye and Perfect Dark are cool and all... but they've got nothing on the fast-paced, addictive fun of Timesplitters™ (2000). If you don't already know, Timesplitters is a shooter made by former Rare employees, running on a modified Goldeneye engine. It also happens to be better than its N64 siblings in just about every way. If you want a game with the "feel" of Goldeneye in glorious 60fps with sharp graphics and cool-funky characters and locales, then you need to play Timesplitters (preferably on PCSX2 with a completely legally obtained rom, such as one that you might find on vimm.net if you were so inclined as to illegally download games which I know you would never do because you're cool and you already own this amazing game).

I own a copy of it but it's just a disc-only copy from Gamestop, I don't have the inserts or anything. I actually played 2 first, then 1, then 3. Do you like 007: Agent Under Fire? I'm a huge fan of that too; I feel like it exists in a similar space as Goldeneye-derived games. It's got kind of hefty autoaim, cool weapons, and some wacky stuff like grappling hooks. The maps are good too. I'm surprised no one ever tried to port it or any of its content to the PC since it runs on the Quake 3 engine.

TS2 had some great maps too, but pretty much every single level in TS1 is legendary -- I could do without a lot of TS2's maps and most of FP's, but there isn't a single one in TS1 that I overtly dislike. The variety of maps, characters and weapons is just better in TS1. There are so many redundant characters and weapons in TS2/FP, like the 20 variations of each soldier character or the weapons that are flat out identical or worse versions of each other (e.g. silenced pistol and LX-18 in future perfect or the snipers in TS2). Meanwhile almost every character and weapon in TS1 is unique and the weapons in particular have a sense of power and feedback that the later games outright lack. Every time I play TS2/FP I can't help but think about the satisfying feeling of TS1's guns and immediately want to go back.

Yeah no, that's a retarded simplification of the game. The goal of each level is to retrieve an object and bring it to a designated area, yes -- but you seem to be forgetting about all of the enemies and obstacles in-between. You know, the actual gameplay. That's like saying "Mario is actually a racing game" just because you need to get from one point to another. I doubt you've played and beaten any of these games and if you have it definitely wasn't on the hardest difficulties. TS's mapmaker feature alone blows the shit out of anything GE and PD offer, even putting aside major issues like the fact that they run at 8fps.

Look, it's okay to like the game. I do too. But quit being pretentious about it. Theres a reason they overhauled story mode for 2 and mad either actually resemble goldeneye. It's because ts1 has shitty singleplayer. I've beaten the game on hard. It's a glorified CTF map.

>> No.7493082

And if you're going to talk shit about framerates, PD and GE both have versions out now that run at higher framerates, and they blow TS1 out of the water with it.

So not only are the two games better but they have versions that run well and allow you to focus on the actual design of the game, which is stellar.

Okay retard, let me give you the straight dope. GE and PD are trashcans filled with crumpled up good ideas. That's the truth. Baseline, they aren't good games. They run at 8fps, they have dogshit controls, they have worse graphics, they have less multiplayer options, they have no content creation features or any way of adding real longevity, and the absolute best way you can play them is on a fucking Xbox 360 with butchered art style. If you think these games are better than Timesplitters, you are wrong. The experience of playing a game like PD is so nauseatingly slow and crippled compared to TS1 it isn't even fun. Half of the guns have fucking melee attack or crouch as a secondary fire because the controller was so assbackwards retarded that they couldn't even make the controls work properly. You might be attached to these games out of nostalgia or bias, but they are objectively, in almost every way, inferior. You can ramble on and on about meaningless monikers like "stealth" while I enjoy tangible features like the ability to make my own entire fucking multiplayer levels. You have a low IQ and in retrospect, I shouldn't even try to coerce you to play a game you don't deserve to play. Enjoy your N64 Timesplitters beta tests.

problem is neither are because the person who conceived, envisioned, and coded all the important and game-making parts of GE was martn hollis who did a bit of initial brainstorming for pd 2 years before its release, then left games to go "explore" southeast asia for a decade.

Future Perfect's fantastic if you're looking for a more story based campaign and a wildly comprehensive mulitplayer mode. It's the height of 6th gen UK game development along with Burnout 3. Come to think of it both Timesplitters and Burnout had a very similar trajectory.
>barebones first game acting as a proof of concept. still very very good
>sequel with far improved base gameplay and a bit more meat on the bones but still relatively barebones

2 out of 3 games disagree with you. I'm not going to deny that multiplayer is what gives the games staying power, but a full package of single player and multiplayer packages make for the best games. Goldeneye and Perfect Dark were the first and only FPS I played for a very long time. I finally got into PC gaming when a friend showed me Unreal Tournament 2004. Recently I tried to replay them using an emulator and was shocked at how poorly they controlled and ran. I couldn't believe I put up with that back then, I considered them unplayable. Thankfully someone made a mouse and keyboard hack for both, it makes them too easy by default but thankfully Rare added a difficulty that allows you to tweak enemy damage, reaction time etc to make it more like a PC FPS.

Lmao it's already downloaded. I guess the ton of hours I put on GE and PD(even 100%ing it minus the challenges, but I did at least try) means nothing though.

The game just doesn't look appealing, and the biggest reason is there are a ton of games I always wanted to play and TS is on the backburner. Also I think I didn't find an iso of the first game on the sites I use. I know 2 is known as the best one but I always start from the beginning of franchises.
