Games obviously age, the only people who think they don't are full blown retards who think a game like Goldeneye could be released exactly as it was on the N64, with the same graphics, controls, and framerate, and still be as critically acclaimed and beloved as it was, and actual autists who don't understand human speech.
Hell the simple lack of/non use of a second analog stick for camera control in 3D games is a huge indication of games ageing.

today's standards are lower so games age by becoming better

Atari 2600's primitive art not only provided new aesthetic forms, it also offered a deeper and more complex emotional and spiritual model that the electronic artists employed to critique the modernization of Western society while forging new opportunities for people to connect with their inner nature, and with each other via the second controller.

This. I have very fond memories of arcade games from 1980-83 and go back and play them frequently. I seldom touch Atari games from the same era even though I played them as a kid. Even in its golden age we knew it was lacking.

I'm a borderline zoomer and I've been playing 2600 games as of the past few years, some of them are very great despite the fact that the system was mostly factory farmed shitty-decent ports of arcade games, here's a small list of my favorites

Defender (good port)
Millipede(I literally like this version more than the arcade version)
Montezuma's Revenge(has its own levels so very worth it in its own right)
Pitfall and Pitfall II
Kaboom
Various modern homebrews, such as Draconian and Galagon, the system is more interesting as an active homebrew machine than it is for playing the original games

>> No.7490782

you dont have to like early video games. but they are the reason why we have great games today. and for the time they were a lot of fun. the real focus was on gameplay and not "immersion" or hours until you beat it. they were pick up and play, the purest form of gaming. finally, if youre able to look at the true stand outs of any era, you will be able to have some fun with the classics if youre not a smoothbrain who plays mmos and other modern games that have to hold your hand and require you to press A whenever you see someone.

You have to look at the bigger picture. Atari 2600 was the affordable pleb blox. Compare it to arcade games and computer games from the late 70s (Apple II). The truth is it's for poor people and they pretend it's awesome because it's all they had (see: ZX Spectrum)

Atari 2600 games sucking does not imply games age.
Atari Pac Man sucks, original Pac Man doesn't, yet both are close to the same age. Does Pac Man hold some immeasurable inscrutable quality which makes it exempt from aging? No, good games are good and bad games are bad.

Pac Man for Atari was shit and everybody at the time knew it. I would say some arcade ports have "aged" now that you can play the real version on your computer. Ms Pac Man for 2600 was a good port, for an Atari game. NES Pac Man is pretty close to the arcade but it's a bit off, so who wants to play it now. They might have been the best way to play the games at home at the time, but now they're only worth looking at as a tech demo.

The 2600 is fine. It's library is about what you'd expect from the first truly successful cartridge based console, the term "game design" literally didn't even exist yet, of course a lot of it wasn't good.

The same thing happened in Japan when the NES/Famicom launched, tons of companies that had no idea how to make video games just decided to try and make video games.

you know how you spent most of your time retro gaming aimlessly browsing your ROM collection, picking a game at random, playing a couple minutes of it, getting bored and picking something else?

the 2600 is a system designed to be played exactly like that.

Most of the classic Atari games are Activision's, who did originals.

There's a few arcade ports that change just enough to not be outclassed by the games they're based off, like Battlezone.

This.

There is something fundamentally wrong with the brains of a lot of people in this world, apparently.

They think that because time moves forward and so does technology, that somehow kid's atari of years ago is the same as the ps5 of today. No it's not the same. It's not. It's not like some revolving threadmill. Even people with basic life competency skills (living independently, some even regrettably making money on youtube). They will be like "oh you collect NES games? Oh in a few years time they'll be the same as Atari game". No they won't, and no I don't have a big collection or interest in collecting NES games. It's not the same idiots.

You see this as well when we formed retro as meaning games of a certain time of technology before the modern style of games came along. And yet people think it HAS to be a treadmill. That the PS2 to today's 20 year old is the same as the NES to a 40 year old - no it's fucking completely different.
