Hey /vr/, I recently got my Sega Saturn modded and I'm having trouble getting backups to work.

I was sent a backup of a Sonic Xtreme demo by the guy who did the installation which works just fine, but any games that I have burnt will not work. (A copy of Die Hard Arcade that I burnt worked the first time I tried it, but any subsequent attempts to play that or any other backup have failed).

I'm using these cheap Memorex CD-R's to burn the games. Do you think they would work better if I used a better quality CD-R? Do I need a better disc drive? I've burnt plenty of Dreamcast games that work perfectly fine.

>> No.748718

First things first. Do your non burnt games work at all? Also which mod chip did you get?

>> No.748734

I've had success with cheap memorex cdrs so don't worry about that part. Are you following this method?: http://abadox.net/how-to-burn-retro-game-images-with-all-free-software/
If so, make sure either disk images are the right region for your saturn (unless you've also bypassed the region lockout).
If you've done all the above, some people swear you have to burn games at slower speeds than you would audio CDs so that might be worth a try. Also, double check your wires are connected correctly if you have the modchip with a red and blue wire like i do, cause if they weren't soldered they will occasionally slip out and have to be put back in the right spots...

ignore the word "either" in this post. I changed my phrasing halfway thru the sentence...

Yes, official games work just fine. Also, the backup demo of Sonic Xtreme I was sent works too. It's only the games I have burnt that don't work.

>>748734
I seem to already be doing everything in that guide. I make sure all of my images are patched for NTSC. My disc drive can only burn as low as 8x.
Again, I don't think it's the modchip because that demo of sonic xtreme works just fine.

I'll try tinkering around with settings to see if I can get something working..

Bump.

>> No.749028

Alright, so when I try to load the game in an emulator from one of the discs I burnt, it doesn't work either. The Sonic Xtreme demo DOES work however (Again, I didn't burn that one.). So something's wrong on my end. Is my disc drive fucked? I've tried burning on my laptop but that didn't work either.
I've ordered a spindle of some Taiyo Yuden discs to see if that will improve anything.

>> No.749164

My Saturn will only boot burned games now if I open the drive, then close it on the CD player screen. Sometimes it takes several tries. The day I installed the mod chip, it worked FINE, no fucking around, but then started dicking off and stabilized at "cannot use action replay codes because the games will not boot from the AR menu".

You need to burn at 4X speed or lower, 2X is ideal. Find a new burner with support or an old one.I use cheapo memorex cd-r's for my modded Dreamcast (Universal v3 modchip)

Also I forgot to mention look up SaturnCueMaker to make cue files for downloads where the cue files are wrong or broken, make sure you burn with the cue files or games won't work/not have audio in most cases. Use ImgBurn to burn.

Cue's should look something like this OP, the files online are kinda sporadic in rip quality, sometimes people fuck em up, SegaCueMaker fixes all. SRP3.0GE is best for region switching.

Alright, thanks for the help. I'm trying this now.
The lowest rate my drive can write at is 8x.

If this doesn't work, the only thing I can assume is wrong is my burner. Is there one you can recommend that should definitely work? I've heard that Pioneer brand burners are good, but I'm not so sure. Is this one any good?

Any more specific recommendations?
Seriously, I just need to know if anyone is able to burn Sega Saturn games and what specific drive they are using..

i found a new-in-box 1999 HP external burner on ebay for less than 40 bucks with shipping.
using verbatim cd-r's. perfect burns every time. you'll also want to make sure your saturn has a good lens

I can't seem to find any of that specific model. Do you think another LG drive would perform just as well?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827136259
Or at least a drive that is closely related to that model?
I honestly don't know much about disc drives.

Its hard because its not well documented anywhere in the tech specs they always list the Max, almost never the min burn speeds :/ Best bet is to buy a bunch/return them if they don't or find an old one somewhere. My old LG drive can do 4X but my new LG bluray/dvd/cd burner can't do cd's any lower than 16X. Unless somebody posts a recently bought burner thats still on the market that can confirm a 4X burn speed can't help much OP.

Don't burn at minimum speeds, that's as bad as burning at maximum. Burn at half the discs max speed. It it says 52x you should burn at 24x. You will output better quality discs this way.

Slower = better quality is a silly internet myth.

P.S.

Clean the laser lens with a cotton swab and some rubbing alcohol. If it still doesn't work then open up your Saturn and adjust the laser intensity. Only use Sony cdrs.

Been doing it for probably 10 years on the same system. Shit still runs like brand new. If it craps out then oh well, I'll pay the 30 bucks for a new one.

Oh holy fuck, I was so worried that my saturn was about to kick the bucket.
Seriously, thank you anon.

>> No.754519

I don't have a modded Saturn, but for burnt backups I use Taiyo Yuden-manufactured Verbatim CD-R/DVD-Rs and burn them as slowly as my drive permits. I also make sure that my source ISOs are either carefully ripped or from one of the careful ripping projects like Darkwater, TOSEC or Trurip. If you want these sets, check out pleasuredome.org.uk.

This so much. Lowest is usually uneven speeds. Highest means lasor is the uncertain factor. Anything between is good.
