Did anyone play the PAL Version of Super Star (called "Kirby's Fun Pak")? In all versions I've played on original hardware there are these strange graphical glitches, pic related. These flickering lines move across the screen when there are enemies present. Did you get these? Are these due to a poor NTSC->PAL conversion?

I wanted to get into the series so I did the logical thing and start with the first game. I got bored quickly and drop it. Now thinking about it, if I were to help someone to get into the Mario series I would start them off with SMW or Mario 3 and not the first game.

Y'know what I miss in Kirby games? The supporting cast. Remember Rick, Coo and Kine? Remember Nago, Pitch and ChuChu? They were awesome. They really fleshed out Kirby's world and even Kirby himself. I never did like the infant caricature they portrayed him as in the anime. Hated it, actually. That carried onto the games themselves. In Dreamland 3, it's implied that he's at least a young adult who can speak. Add insult to injury, Sakurai didn't even work on most of the more known Kirby games. Super Star excluded. After Adventure, Shinichi Shimomura took over. He made the animal friends and the Dark Matter storyline. He also may have died after Nightmare in Dreamland. Even a search on Google does nothing. Overall, the Kirby games are still fun but the past Kirby games have a charm and appeal that just isn't captured in the newer games. That's how I feel personally. Plus, I liked how he looked in the older art.

Same here. I have fun with the Kirby series, but I'd like them better if they (especially Kirby 64) didn't feel like Junior's First Platformer. I'd really like selectable difficulty options.

Kirby's Dream Land was hilarious on hard mode. Agree.

The ability mixing mechanic was fun and I liked the different settings and characters, but the game was way too damn easy, even for a Kirby game. For fuck's sake, mixing the Bomb and Rock powers let you throw unlimited packs of dynamite that damaged an entire screen's worth of enemies. The only thing that was even remotely challenging was the Boss Rush mode.

Also, I though it was pretty stupid that Kirby pretty much moved at the same damn speed no matter if he was walking or running.

The remakes graphics just suck honestly. The backgrounds are all great huge jpegs and the environment's pseduo-realistic look clashes something awful with the flat cartoony style of the characters. By comparison the NES version's BGs are all animated and manage to look just as nice while actually looking like it blends in somewhat with the foreground.

Also hate the way most platforms of the remake are all suspended in midair like in this pic:

I'm playing Return to Dreamland now. It's alright. I'm not enjoying it as much as Adventure though.

The gameplay is solid and I can't make any solid complaints against it except it lack of difficulty. The game just feels a bit uninspired at points. It's all the things a Kirby game should be because it's a Kirby game, not because it really stands on its own legs.

Some of the songs are nice though and it looks pretty. The two player is also quite fun to play when stoned & or drunk.

If you can make a vacuum effect in Doom or sourceports then you should be fine. I see no reason why you couldn't make something where monsters are around to vacuum in and get powers.

Or you could do the easy way and use those power-up things that are in Return to Dream Land and other Kirby games. You know, where it's just sitting like a statue and you grab it and then you have the power.

The bigger difficulty to me is making all of the special moves and combos work. There's a lot of button input magic that goes into them, it'd be like making Smash Bros. in Doom.

Kirby was, and always will be, a game made exclusively for children.

Kirby's Dream Land was magical when I was 3, when Zelda was too intense for me and Final Fantasy involved too much reading.

Playing it again, I can see it for the fact that it is a 30-minute-long snoozefest of extremely average playability, noteable only for its fanciful music and creatively cute graphics.

Even when copying was introduced, the game gained little depth, because not one ounce of commensurate exploration, replayability, or difficulty was added. The main driving force was always simplicity, because Kirby is a franchise that above all needs to be a pick-up-and-play title for even a five-year-old girl.

Another problem I have with Kirby. I don't like how rounded and cute he became. NOT that he wasn't already cute, it just came as a secondary thing. >> No.848568

>>848010
I'll try to put it in a different way. Kirby was cute, but that wasn't really all his character design showed. As you can see in the pic I posted, Kirby can show more than one emotion. Now, if that picture were from a modern Kirby game, he'd have a blank look on his face, oblivious to what he possibly caused. That's what I'm trying to say. Older Kirby was cute, but had a sense of what he was doing. Modern Kirby is cute without any other emotion and not knowing what's going on around him. All art either shows him angry, happy or looking like an idiot. I blame the anime and every game cover after Tilt N' Tumble.

Well, there's the NES game with all the abilities, and it's still pretty challenging. There's the Gameboy game which doesn't have any copy abilities, but it can be beaten in half an hour, and is quite brutal if you turn on the hard mode cheat.

Then, of course, there's the SNES games. You can't really go wrong with any of them, but Super Star is a bunch of fun, it's basically a bunch of different games in one cartridge.

Oh my God. This is one of the most perfect NES games and just in general games I've ever played. 3 attacks and 2 buttons. More enemy variety than most AAA releases. So much charm and character. Kirby is responsive and controls tight, it's so much fun, and the music puts even SMB 3 to shame, and that was (and still is) my favorite NES game.

Lolo and Lala. I was pleasantly surprised by the cameo.

Does anyone have that image that's a timeline of Kirby becoming Lavos? I thought I saved it years ago but I can't find it, and it's not on the internet anywhere.

No turning back now, 6 more posts and it hit bump limit.
RIP two-month old Kirby thread

This doesn't even make sense.

I never cared for Super Star. Ultra is a better version, but still looks like a shitty 90s PC game.

Adventure, Dream Land 3, and 64 are where it's at.
Amazing Mirror is a great game. I wish they would work on another game on that scale again.

I can't beat the last challenge stages in Dream Collection with platinum medals... Kirby games may be easy as hell, but some of the optional content is brutal.

By the way, anyone have that picture that's like, Kirby, next to a giant skull with a boner ejaculating blood popping out of its face? Someone made it in response to how dark and tone-clashing Kirby games' final bosses are.

I think the execution wasn't very good.
Started playing for the first time a few weeks ago and it looked horrendous at first. A friend asked if this was originally for the NES. It sort of grew on me but not that much.

And the thread is in Auto Sage.
Let's honor it and never forget that Kirby is loved by us all.
