It's not bad when you understand the controls. Needed a lot more tracks though

>> No.7481591

Controls were ridiculously floaty but I liked it's vibe. Just goes to show that a great soundtrack can lift a more on the mediocre side game.

>> No.7481598

sortof fun but its like, once you've put like 8 hours into it theres really not much left to it

Only 5 tracks. Sega sure did love ripping off their gullible and stupid as fuck fanbase.

I owned a real copy for the Saturn. I finished it multiple times and unlocked all of the cups and bonus characters. It's fun in it's own way, once you get use to the controls. But it feels very incomplete to me. The game has only 5 tracks, with one being the emerald track. The tracks can be raced in reverse. The weapon system in this game is odd. I could never figure out if Robotniks rockets really did much damage. The game engine is neat, with its fade in effects, and the game does run at 30fps, and doesn't look bad at all. I hate the lyrics and always go for the instrumentals. Sorry. The game feels like it was thrown together rather hastily. It's funny how long the Saturn went without a real Sonic\c game. Sega of America tried with Sonic Xtreme and failed. It came down to a collection of Genesis/ mega Drive games with bonus content, a port of a Mega Drive/ Genesis game. And This, Sonic R. Two Telltale games.

Yes. Controls could be better but they’re by no means unwieldy or even bad. Love the diverse level routes and shortcuts too. I really wish Mario Kart had the same track design that this game does. The lack of courses is disappointing but many arcade racing ports had even less, and it doesn’t necessarily make the game worse. A damn good game imo.

>The lack of courses is disappointing but many arcade racing ports had even less, and it doesn’t necessarily make the game worse. A damn good game imo.

The tracks do have some replay to them with secrets and unlockable areas. They are not terrible. The controls work best if you use the d-pad, IMO.

It's not even close to what I would be able to call a complete game (just by playable content amount I would call it about 25% and they really should have worked on the mechanics too, so it's less complete than that) but there are flashes of fun to give you a taste for whenever Sega will get around to putting the rest in. Any day now.

It’s pretty bad. I beat it for the first time recently, and while you do get used the controls somewhat they aren’t good by any stretch of the imagination.

Its technical achievements and music are amazing. I'm very glad I got it from a random prize draw from a random website, probably because everyone else asked to be on the drawing for the Playstation game instead. It is fun enough that I can easily revisit the game and get a full experience in a short go.

I liked it, although I played the PC version. It had some sound card problem so I didn't get to hear the OST, just the pitter patter of feet across eeriely empty polygonal worlds. Controls take some mastering but once you do it's second nature. Most people don't realize each character has different hidden stats, or that there are drift controls, so they think the game has bad controls. If you're having trouble turning some tight corners try using Knuckles.

its not just the music for me, Sonic R feels like the closest we got to the Genesis games in 3d form. Adventure graphics feels like their own theme.

>> No.7482953

It's a curiosity, but it doesn't play well.
Soundtrack is the real highlight.

>> No.7483291

I never had an issue with the game's controls because I looked at the control binding screen and saw the sharp turn controls, and then used them. I suspect most people did not figure out turning and that's why there's so many complaints specifically about the controls.
The Saturn version also seemed to have more input lag than any other version when I played it recently, so people that only played it may think worse of the controls than people that played ports of it.
Ignoring the controls, it's a pretty simple game with poor balance and a small amount of content, but I think the gameplay is basically fun if you aren't using a low-tier character. Finding the fastest route and doing time trials is fun.

There's no opinion to be had on Sonic R. It's objectively bad. It objectively plays/controls like shit and has absolutely fucking awful music. Some of the worst music to ever be in a game.

The only reason SR didn't get massacred in reviews at the time is because it had good graphics for the Saturn and games journos have always been lying corrupt scum.

They also didn't realize you don't have to hold up to move forward you can just hold a button like a car gas pedal in most traditional racing games.

Everyone ITT that complains about the controls got filtered hard as FUCK. Not even worth taking their opinions seriously.

>> No.7483583

Terrible controls but awesome music and lots of secrets and things to find. Great graphics by Saturn standards, better on PC though.

I think TT did the best with the time and budget they were given

Played this with some friends in college on Sonic Gems Collection. Single player was fun but short. Could unlock everything in about an hour or two. Multiplayer was ridiculously unbalanced even without the secret characters. Balloon hunt was fun until you recognized all of the spawn points. Really liked the atmosphere of the game. Had a lot of "soul"
