I can't think of a more mismanaged company.

They completely ignore every region except Japan.
They refuse to release anything but Genesis games.
They killed Sega Ages (again), and attribute its failure to a lack of market interest in retro games instead of the fact that it was just the same games that have been rereleased dozens of times now.
They release Sega Forever with only the same endlessly rehashed Genesis ports and then abandon it in less than a year.
They release a $50 GAME GEAR mini, with only 4 games, despite literally no one in history ever asking for a Game Gear rerelease.
They release a Genesis mini yet again with the same Genesis ports they always shit out.
They utterly neglect their massive unparalleled back catalog of quality IPs.
They keep idiots like Sonic Team around who have done nothing but tarnish and devalue the Sega brand.

It's because its parent company Sammy has no influence outside of Japan and they split Sega Enterprises into two companies with one handling Sega's Japanese amusements and arcades (the one Sammy cares about) and another handling Sega's console IPs which solely exists to just milk nostalgia and Sonic games for teenagers with lame parents.

Ironically though, the Covid crisis has basically killed arcades in Japan so Sammy sold like 90% of its arcade business to a competitor and combined the remaining 10% with their console game business, so who knows what will happen? Sega refocusing on making actually good console games? Selling the whole thing to Microsoft to bolster their xCloud offerings in Japan where gaming on smartphones is huge? Investing in developing emulation for Saturn and Model 2/3 arcade systems? Or the most likely option of just floating the entire company on selling more shitty Genesis emulations and the occasional lackluster re-boot of an IP until Sega finally dies?

Potentially exciting times, but probably not though.

They still release new games, including Yakuza which i love, so it's not all bad.

Then again, i am one of those that likes Yakuza more than Shenmue so maybe my opinion shouldn't count on this board, just saying Sega made a modern world JRPG that i actually had fun with.

Well, they do make the Total War games, and Puyo Puyo, Football Manager, Yakuza, Bayonetta, Persona and Sonic.

Granted, some of those are just because they bought developers years ago, but they still own the IP's, make and release the games even if few people think of, say, Atlus as being Sega.

Granted, not all of those games are...great, but they are doing well for themselves and have some cool games, it's also sadly worth pointing out that when it comes to old licenses, they have used them so little only a few people would care if they came back.

Can't see that much excitement for a new Golden Axe game(though it would be hard to make it as bad or worse than the last game) or Altered Beast.

They still haven't released the Virtual On games and Border Break outside of Japan. They used to be lot worse on that regard but thats because they used to make more games. Nowdays they hardly do anything so there is lot less games to publish.

They've actually catered to their fans fairly well I think, aside from Yakuza we've also got Valkyria Chronicles 4, Space Channel 5 VR, Virtual On, Streets of Rage 4, Phantasy Star Online 2, Sakura Wars, Puyo Puyo etc. and other IPs like Shenmue, Panzer Dragoon, House of the Dead (the future remakes), and Jet Set Radio (with Bomb Rush Cyberfunk) are also getting quite a bit of love by outside companies. The exclusive focus on Genesis and Game Gear stuff is fairly disapointing, but the remaster treatment that M2 gave them is leagues above the remasters that most other companies offer.

I think the only thing I would complain about is that they haven't released a Dreamcast mini because it seems like such a missed opportunity. Then again, they have actually preserved a lot of their catalogue for PC and other consoles, so it doesn't seem as that important either.

As for the OP, Sega is clearly doing better than most companies when it comes to quality content, as it's always the case, even in the late 00's when the Japanese industry fell.

>> No.7468993

Not retro, but I bought the Yakuza collection on PC and the ports are dogshit and they even cut content.
Don't expect anything from that company, they made (and still make once in a while) fantastic games, but their incompetence has no bounds and they treat their customers like garbage.

>> No.7469012

>>7468993
Wait, aren't those the remastered versions that bring back the cut content that wasn't there in the first western releases for 3 and such?

Don't know if the PC ports are shit, though sadly japanese developers are more likely to screw up PC ports than western ones.

And the developers they bought do seem to make games that people enjoy too.

And that just reminds me i haven't played any of the new Puyo Puyo games, i got gifted Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 but it's just sitting there, heard it's good at least but have yet to try it.

I get that you're a salty Dreamcast or Saturn fan but the Genesis Mini was a good product that made available many games that hadn't be re-released in decades and even got licensed titles.

What cut content? Some stuff that was censored on the PS3 Western releases was actually brought back.
If you're talking about the tranny missions in 龍が如く3, all I can say is good riddance. They were useless and didn't add anything to the game.

To be fair, it was a gift, may as well try Puyo Puyo Tetris 2 and some multiplayer sessions, it does seem to be a weird mix of both puzzle games though, and it does have a modern anime aesthetic, but i want to play blocks and slime things falling on top of each other, that's what should matter the most
