It's fractured and disjointed and some sections are unfinished, but the game is all there in some form from the opening sequences the Drakor boss. But to make it properly playable from start to what passes for the end of the game, work is needed. (Which is why decompilation is already in process.)

The Kamerian Heart is present in the game. This is a major plot element in Dinosaur Planet that, along with Drakor being a Kamerian and the actual villain of the story (unless you count the Krazoa), was cut. But nobody is sure how it is accessed. To play the game properly, it needs to be played in order. And/or we need to understand the status flags well enough to control progression. A lot of stuff in the game just doesn't work without the correct flags being set.

Do you have any clue what to do after the spellstone? I see a lot of people heading directly to Volcano Force Point Temple but the game still crashes a ton, but I've also noticed the game likes to crash a lot when stuff is done out of order. Geruda Te said the Thorntails would help and one of them seems to have new dialogue about The SharpClaws draining their river. Tricky seems to be able to burn the vines near the SwapStone and there's places to dig, only now I can't feed him blue mushrooms to be able to dig.

Discovery Falls seems to be the first area as Krystal.
DarkIce Mines seems to be the first area as Sabre/Fox. It's also one of the first areas in Star Fox Adventures, so makes sense. Geruda Te mentioned the ThornTails, seems odd to go down the river to Diamond Bay without doing anything involving them first. They seem to need help with something, and digging in these burrows seems likely, I just can't seem to feed Tricky any blue mushrooms to continue.

Honestly, what damaged the game the most wasn't the Star Fox conversion. It wasn't even the switch to GameCube. It was the loomimg Microsoft buyout. Don't forget, Microsoft literally bought Rare a mere day after the original release date. One DAY. And that's just the North American release - by the time it released in other regions, Rare was already bought out. That's cutting it close if I ever saw it. So the next time you blame the choppy gameplay, stilted story, stock sounds, etc. on anything, remember that Microsoft caused the rushed development, not the IP nor the console.

Ironically, Nintendo allowed Namco to make Star Fox Assault darker than Dinosaur Planet ever was, where the melodrama was bumped up to almost comedic degrees, paving the way for Command's ridiculousness.
>Remember that Nintendo refused to publish several Rare titles in part because of their content.

I agree (though I'd also put the blame on othet potential buyers putting pressure like Activision, not just Microsoft). If Rare maybe had another year or even a few more months of development time, they wouldn't have been as compelled to cut significant story elements and been able to iron out more of the kinks. I think this N64 build might've happened just before Rare was getting serious offers, because although work on Fox just began, they also started to modify the story to make sense of his inclusion. I think if there was more time, Rare would've felt comfortable enough to keep the game as "Star Fox Adventures: Dinosaur Planet" or "Dinosaur Planet: Guest Starring Fox McCloud" to give the impression it's more of a crossover or spinoff than a mainline Star Fox game, which hurt reception most I feel. This might've even had an affect on Assault, which would've released too soon after Adventures and could've used more time to fix the on-foot gameplay and add trademark branching paths.

I got Trickys mom sorted out and tried swimming down the falls 3 or 4 times, crashed every time so Im calling it a day for now. My biggest mystery of today is the green emerald that dude kept handing me in the beginning as Krystal. Every time I talked to him he would hand me this green emerald, and at the time I was bugged and had for some reason not received the fire spell. Since I was locked I restarted, having progressed beyond that point and using the blue gem I had gotten using the fire power (gained after having restarted) my mind wanders as to if something would of happened if I used that green gem. Alright, so having played what I've been able to and looking through videos of people glitching around to make progress, it seems to me like most of this game actually made it into Star Fox Adventures. Like sure, the story received some tweaks, you barely play as Krystal and a couple of areas were removed but it really doesn't seem like it's that much more different than any other game differs from the early versions. If anything, SFA is more like DP than Half-Life 2 is like the early versions of itself.

Let's be real, let's pretend the game was never reworked into a Star Fox game, what changes? Considering the devlopment would still have been moved to Gamecube, most of the cut content would still have been cut. Here's the potential differences between SFA and a Gamecube DP:
>No Arwing stages (obviously)
>Sabre and the Swap mechanic might have remained
>Drakor Boss fight would have been at the end and maybe better than in SFA
>The cut areas might still have been around but probably not.

That's it, in terms of gameplay it would essentially be the same. Story elements like Randorn might have remained but the story is generally the same in SFA as in DP. In DP it's Drakor who tricks Scales and in SFA it's Andross, that's kind of it.

Are we really going to pretend SFA is drastically different from DP when the reality just doesn't back it up? Like yeah, sucks that Rare was forced to insert an established character for marketing purposes but it's not like DP was replaced by a totally different game.

Backstory, not story, keep that distinction in mind. In terms of the actual plot that unfolds in DP and SFA, how many differences are there? Krystal is trapped, Drakor is just some mutant, Andross takes his place, and the Fortresses have been knocked into orbit around the planet. That's it.

And I was primarily pointing out gameplay aspect. If I somehow missed that less than 60% of the areas, spells, puzzles, combat, enemies, bosses, items and mechanics made it into the final version, feel free to point it out. But if I had to make an estimate, SFA contains at least 75% of what we see in this leaked build, maybe even more. A 25% difference, or even a 40%, isn't that uncommon in game development.

Well krystal puzzles would have been cut or severely reworked seeing as tricky can't fly in addition the (for the most part) loadless transition between maps is much nicer than how SFA handles maps changes as well as more than likely an actual scales boss and the kamerian heart boss. (Story doc says we have a fight with scales and we see hints of it in the rom no one's gotten the correct triggers yet though)

And while I know this is more story based again but the darker tone in DP in my opinion is nicer than the tone in the retail game.

>Randorn is Sabre's father and they're from a Wolf tribe.
>Krystal is from a Fox tribe and was adopted by Randorn after a gemocide.
>They somehow ended up on Sauria (yes, the name wasn't an invention of Assault).
>The Krazoa were the enemies of Dragon Gods, among them Drakor.
>The Krazoa create Sauria after defeating the Dragons.
>The Krazoa have disappeared and Drakor seeks out Scales to help him.
>Drakor intends to destroy several planets, including Sauria, Animus and oddly enough Earth.

It seems that the early retool of into a Star Fox game doesn't change much. It replaced Animus with Corneria and Fox is obviously not related to Randorn. Interestingly though, it appears that instead of overhauling the story to fit Star Fox, it instead retcons Fox's backstory by making Randorn a friend of James and Fox himself a knight.

Dragon people are from a planet called Kameria (one of the majestic 8 planets along with animus earth corneria sauria and some others)
Why do the Krazoa fight them? The beings the Krazoa worship are dicks
Why is drakor a dick? His people were killed in a war between them and the Krazoa. His main plan was to revive the Kamerian heart (pic related) and when Fox/Saber destroys the Kamerian heart his plans switch to destroying the planet (presumably that was also what he wanted to revive the heart for as well?) to I assume prevent the return of the Krazoa/the spirits that they worshiped.

That's like saying most of Justice League made it into the Whedon Cut. It's all the characters and dialogue they cut out, and the goofy as fuck additiona that derail everything. The alignment of the 8 is gone. Princess Kite is gone. Randorn is gone. The themes of furry racism are mostly gone. The sinister (and condescending) as fuck spirits are either gone or have all their dialogue removed.

By removing Randorn, the player has absolutely no reason to believe the Krazoa have changed. If Krystal can believe in Randorn, she can believe in the Krazoa. Because of these changes there is a cascading narrative and tone problem that permeates SFA. The central theme of DP is reconciliation. Lot of The Dark Crystal influence there. What is the central theme of SFA? Something, something, garbled distress symbol, something, Andross was behind everything.

It did. The Snyder Cut isn't twice as long because two hours' worth of movie was cut out, it's longer because they filmed new footage. And once again, I wasn't primarily talking about the plot, I was talking about the gameplay content.

Only 5 minutes of new footage were shot for the Snyder Cut. Everything else was shot back in 2016. Dinosaur Planet is a much bigger, more expansive, and narratively complex game than SFA, even in its unfinished state. Partially because SFA is padded to hell and back with bullshit.

And of course the gameplay is largely the same. Although DP doesn't open with ten minutes of running back and forth carrying barrels. Dinosaur Planet/Star Fox Adventures is a story-driven game. If the story is shit the entire house of cards falls down.

I bet you're one of those people who complain about Half-Life 2's story being different what it originally was? Or maybe you're mad that Bioshock isn't about fighting bugmen in Russian tunnels? Or perhaps you don't like that we got Pikmin instead of 128 Marios running around on the same screen?

Multiple characters talk about their failures setting things right throughout the finished game, the Krazoa were believed because they were necessary in putting the planet back together (and to save Krystal). The only signifigant downgrade here is that Fox has no personal stakes in this and is mainly concerned about getting money to repair the Great Fox.

Games change in development and the version of the story without Fox isn't that much better. Stop being a retard and stop pretending we missed out on some masterpiece because the final product has a (potentially) worse story.

Dinosaur Planet -> Star Fox Adventures is more like Crysis, where 1/2 of the missions were removed, 1/2 of the characters were removed, and the entire third act of the story was removed. Star Fox Adventures is a disjointed game where none of the character motivations make sense because they're copypasted versions of DP characters without the context and motivation of DP. The central conflict in DP is between the Krazoa and the Kamerians. I don't think you understand the plot of DP in the slightest. Krystal's motivations don't make sense in SFA. The Kamerians don't make sense. Tricky doesn't make sense. Princess Kyte, a major character, was turned into a "This is how you press A" tutorial prompt. Randorn was completely removed. The villain of the story, Drakor had all his dialogue removed. Where did General Scales get all that fancy technology in SFA? Who the fuck knows. Well in DP he got it from Drakor. Why is Dinosaur Planet's magic supply being fucked with? The answer is simple. Drakor is attempting to resurrect the Kamerians, his people.

SFA is a completely incoherent game narratively. It is so cut down and disjointed that there's a scene where Fox tells Tricky off for doing a bad thing he did in a cutscene they removed. SFA is DP put through a Nintendo retard filter. It's basically what happened to Kameo, too, where the game was in development since the late 90s and kept changing, and eventually they were forced to disguise her as an elf because MS's focus testers didn't like the idea of playing as a fairy, and stuff like that. DP is narratively and tonally and thematically one of Rare's best games. It would have been regarded (and is going to be retroactively regarded) as one of the greatest games of the 5th generation.

>> No.7469930

>>7469875
It's funny you use Conker as an example, because while it has better gameplay, literally everything else about Conker: Live and Reloaded is worse than the N64 version. Conker can't emote properly, multiple major cutscenes are clearly unfinished because characters just freeze in place instead of walking off frame, and there are even scenes where characters have incorrect facial expressions. Plus the entire glass of milk+Clockwork Orange motif that permeates the Panther King+Conker himself is completely broken because he has a goblet for some reason with no milk in it.

Vixon tripe, actually. They're a tribe of foxes. The wolves and the foxes had a conflict and Randorn's son (Sabre's brother) was killed in the fighting. Randorn went a bit crazy, abandoned Sabre, and wandered around killing Vixon wherever he stumbled across them.

How does she know the dinosaur language (which is nonexistant in Dinosaur Planet but very much a thing in SFA during the first few hours until Slippy cooks up a translator)? Why is she running around with no clothes? Surely a visitor from a civilized planet would be wearing more than a chest wrap and loincloth.

But I liked how the antagonists of at least one of those games were some experiment or subordinate of Andross' that, once he was no longer there to control them due to being dead, just went wild and attempted to fill the power vacuum he left behind. I like the idea of once the big bad is defeated it's not just "happy sunshine funtime and the power of friendship and everything's perfect" forever, there's actual fallout and consequences to taking a dictator down. >Scenes play out as in SFA, Krystal retreats to Warlock Palace after Scales throws her overboard, which was unknowingly attacked while Krystal was away. She soon finds her dropped Staff after a brief stealth section teaser. This begins her weapon tutorial as she tries to reach Randorn, whom she can't reach telepathically (because he has been weakened).
>At the end, she is trapped into a crystal by an unknown entity (Drakor, whom she doesn't recognize). She telepathically sends out a distress signal before passing out.
>Cue the Great Fox. None of the junk about the team being bored on patrol for eight years is necessary, maybe a year or two at most. Team is as in SFA but living a little more comfortably after destroying the greatest threat to the system. General Pepper tells them about Sauria, also known to the locals as Dinosaur Planet, receiving a distress signal. Slippy says that it's the right thing to do while ROB says the money could go to repairs, but Fox derides it as some primitive backwater little space rock that isn't worth the effort. Then Peppy speaks up and recognizes it as the refuge of Randorn, a friend of the original Star Fox team, piquing Fox's curiosity. He agrees to the mission.
>Basic Arwing level (sorry, gotta have 'em, Krystal's CloudRunner intro was already somewhat Arwing-like) as Fox travels to directly to the Warlock Palace landing site.
>Fox is allowed to keep his Blaster, which in this game functions as the Staff's Fire Blaster upgrade. Gets a recap of the team's role when he lands. The player easily sees that Fox can use his Blaster to access areas Krystal couldn't.

>> No.7473625

>>7473563
>Soon finds Randorn. Peppy pops up and introduces Fox as James McCloud's son. Randorn remembers James fondly as a friend of his sons when they were pups, having grown up on the same homeworld, Cerinia. Fox wonders aloud why his father never told him much about Cerinia, which he heard was suddenly abandoned and later destroyed in one of Andross's experiments. Randorn changes the subject by saying he migrated because Dinosaur Planet needed to be kept under a watchful eye from threats like Scales. He gives Fox a memento of his late son's, the Sabre, to help his adopted daughter Krystal.
>The Sabre is Sabre's sword with his fighting spirit infused into it, does not have projectiles like the Fire Blaster for obvious reasons, becomes Fox's melee weapon. The rest of Warlock Palace serves as a tutorial as Fox reaches Krystal.
>The Sabre resonates with the crystal and so Fox is able to shatter it. This frees Krystal but mysteriously causes the planet to split apart. This is when Peppy chimes in to chastise Fox: they're there to save the planet, not blow it up, but he softens when he sees that Fox was saving Krystal, who is still unconscious. Fox takes Krystal to Randorn, and Krystal speaks telepathically. She says that the spirit energy of the Sabre can be transferred to the Staff, which will awaken her but cause Fox to enter a sleeplike state, and vice versa. This opens the game up proper as the swap mechanic is explained - Krystal's mission is to retrieve the Krazoa Spirits to restore their bodies to normal, while Fox's mission is to retrieve the SpellStones to heal the planet, fixing the mess they caused.

>From Randorn's chamber, the adventure truly begins by having him warp your character to the WarpStone in ThornTail Hollow. There are additional WarpStones in DarkIce Mines, CloudRunner Fortress, the Walled City and Dragon Rock, and they can fast-travel to previously-visited WarpStones when activated. Naturally they have the more memorable SFA personality and voice instead of the boring DP one.
>New feature: contacting ROB on the communicator will ask if you want the Great Fox to beam the Arwing closer to your current location. While only Fox can pilot the Arwing, it is also where characters can be swapped.
>Most of the game follows SFA progression at this point forward. Fox eventually bonds with Tricky while Krystal is helped by Kyte (as in SFA, they cannot go to Warlock Palace or the Game Well Maze). Gameplay keeps the parts of DP that worked better however, like tighter combat. They have access to the same item pool such as the P.D.A. but different weapons and partners. Tone is between DP & SFA. Also, of course the friendless SharpClaw is kept in.
>Throughout the game, there are more hints that there is some greater force than Scales. Fox can't shake the feeling that the technology Scales possesses is eerily familiar. Krystal still tries to find traces of the being that attacked her in Warlock Palace, which she senses is not working for Scales. Both suspect that Randorn knows even more than he lets on. Peppy is privvy but he swore to secrecy because Randorn promised to tell all when the time is right, reassuring that Randorn has their best intentions in mind. Peppy mentions Randorn being especially distraught when he told him about Pigma, and that what he is hiding is heavy grief.
>General Scales is fought where Drakor was in SFA, and teleports away with his Kamerian Belt when defeated just before falling into the lava. Krystal catches a glimpse of Drakor watching overhead.

>> No.7473642

>>7473632
>After the SpellStones are collected, Fox decides to pay Randorn a visit to explain why the planet isn't together again. He says that an outsider of Kamerian descent known as Drakor is responsible for weakening the SpellStones by using his Kamerian Heart. He explains that Drakor has been using Scales for his own ends, supplying him with salvaged alien technology, and that he aims to bring darkness to the Lylat system. Krystal is listening and telepathically asks how Randorn knows Drakor since she never heard of him. Randorn dismisses it as a long story. Randorn actually has a bit of stuff to say each time you go back to return a Krazoa Spirit.
>Later when visiting Warlock Palace the final time (no junk about Tricky being left in the Walled City), Scales shows up for a rematch, but is stopped by an unknown force (Drakor, not Andross). Scene plays out like SFA, but it's not a major loss since you already fought him. The final scenes happen when you go to Randorn on the way to release the Spirit.
>Randorn senses there may not be much time left and is as ready as he'll ever be to share his secret. He lived on Cerinia with his two sons. When he lost one of them, Sabre, to a tribe of foxes, his magical power went awry in a blind rage and he wiped nearly all of them out. He snapped out of it when he heard a baby crying, and realized what he had done. He took her in, raised her as his own, and named her Krystal. His other son, Wolf, never forgave him and left home shortly afterward, never speaking to him again. Fox recognizes the name and asks if he happens to know an O'Donnell. Randorn replies that no one has called him Randorn O'Donnell ever since he came to Dinosaur Planet. Fox and Krystal both aren't sure what to say and silently decide to figure it out later, angry with him.

>> No.7473665

>>7473642
>The new point of no return is when Krystal returns the final Krazoa Spirit. The Sabre shatters, freeing the flow of energy between it and the Staff. This causes Fox to awaken independently of Krystal. She soon walks in, and they meet each other properly for the first time, but the meeting is cut short as Drakor announces his presence. It's explained why Randorn flew into a blind rage all those years ago: when he was younger, Drakor stole Sabre's weapon, killed him with it, and framed the foxes when he learned that Randorn had a vision that a fox of theirs would be the downfall of his emperor. However, he had barely missed James McCloud's departure from the tribe, who soon fell in love with a Papetoon native and begat the fox in question. Fox then realizes that Drakor had seen Fox's victory over Andross. After Andross fell, Drakor managed to salvage much of Andross's technology from Venom, becoming more powerful while devising a plan to undo what Fox did. Suddenly, there's shaking, and Drakor says that the revival process should be finished, thanking Krystal for returning the Krazoa Spirits for him. Fox says that he'll go out after Andross when Krystal takes care of Drakor, knowing that's she's capable, and she agrees and tells him they'll meet again. Player can finally choose which scenario to play first: FOX VS ANDROSS or KRYSTAL VS DRAKOR. Battles are (graciously) timed to give the player a sense of urgency, as Andross is trying to lose Fox and rejoin the remnants of his army and Drakor is about to gather enough energy in his Kamerian Heart to blow up Dinosaur Planet for good.

>Fox's final boss is extremely similar to SFA, as Fox chases Andross in the Arwing. Instead of the "Krazoa God" (which never made sense as a "disguise"), one half of Andross is based on his SNES design, while the other is closer to N64. Falco shows up here as in SFA. When Andross is destroyed, the Spirits are freed, returning back to the planet. However...
>Krystal's final boss is like the one she would have received in DP. Near the end of the battle, SCALES (sans belt) of all people joins in with his galleon to ally himself with Krystal, though he's more furious at having been a pawn this whole time rather than really reformed. When Drakor is destroyed, the SpellStones return to full strength. Like SFA, it's ambiguous if Scales survives.

>After both final bosses, Dinosaur Planet is reassembled. Krystal returns to Randorn and gets sombre news - Randorn is starting to vanish, as Sabre came to him and said that he must be meeting James soon. Unable to do anything, Krystal blurts out that she forgives him and that he was a good father. Randorn fades away with a smile on his face for the first and final time. The scene cuts away to the Great Fox, which segues with Peppy and Fox having a brief exchange about Randorn but Fox just sincerely thanks Peppy for looking out for him all these years, and Slippy cuts in and Fox laughs and says the whole team did a great job. ROB receives Pepper's transmission and the scene acts out much as in the final game (except no "Oh, and Tricky says Hi!"). Instead of a message from Krystal, Tricky and Kyte appear together on the monitor and ask the Star Fox team to come down and join the festivities. Fox agrees and says there's also something he's gotta do anyway, telling Tricky and Kyte that they are also honorary members of the Star Fox team for their invaluable service. He adds if Kyte has seen Krystal, but she says no, and Fox says not to worry. Next, we see more of the tribes and characters celebrating - for example, Falco's hanging out at CloudRunner Fortress, Peppy's at the Walled City, Slippy's at ThornTail Hollow, and ROB's at LightFoot Village. Fox, however, rushes to Warlock Palace. Outside, he's surprised to see the SharpClaw peacefully celebrating their liberation. Inside, he finds Krystal where Randorn was, meditating, and he approaches her quietly. Camera pans to her face as she opens her eyes, smiling warmly. Fade to black, roll credits.

>Fox derides it as some primitive backwater little space rock that isn't worth the effort. Then Peppy speaks up and recognizes it as the refuge of Randorn, a friend of the original Star Fox team, piquing Fox's curiosity.
I think Fox should be more commenting on why a backwater planet is so important to Pepper rather than outright reject it at first, if anything he should be skeptical at hearing Peppy say his father knew an exiled wizard. Like, keep Fox's personality contrasted with Krystal's, but don't make him too unlikable. We wanna root for him after all.
>>7473625
>Fox takes Krystal to Randorn, and Krystal speaks telepathically. She says that the spirit energy of the Sabre can be transferred to the Staff, which will awaken her but cause Fox to enter a sleeplike state, and vice versa.
I'd have Randorn explain that second part, Krystal is more of an apprentice. She can speak telepathically to Fox and Peppy to assure them that she's the one who sent the distress signal and to take her body to Randorn since he'd know what to do.
>>7473632
>While only Fox can pilot the Arwing, it is also where characters can be swapped.
Definitely prefer this over the WarpStone since it's more convenient and mitigates backtacking, but I'd add this to Randorn's swap explanation in Warlock Palace and show him warping Krystal to Fox's Arwing before warping Fox to ThornTail Hollow. Also before I forget: Tricky or Kyte swap here too? I get Fox and Krystal swapping, but there needs to be an explanation why Tricky and Kyte can't be out at once. I guess the kids were taught by their parents not to trust the other's tribe, thus seeing them get along during the ending is all the better?

This reminds me: what happens if you activate cutscenes meant for the other character? Here, Fox handles SpellStones while Krystal handles Krazoa Spirits, but in DP, you're also swapping to entirely different locations. Is there just an alternate version of the cutscene with the other character most of the time? Suppose that'd encourage replay value. Maybe establish that Fox has a mental link to talk back when Krystal is active?
>>7473665

>>7473704
>He adds if Kyte has seen Krystal, but she says no, and Fox says not to worry.
It'd be even better if Tricky yells out, "Let's play!"
Overall? Ironing out some of the kinks, this just goes to show that all you really needed was time and execution to blend the game with an existing IP. Too bad Rare was in panic mode during GameCube development, the revised premise could have really been great and explored the Star Fox universe in new and interesting ways while at the same time paying respect to the N64 version. It's a shame the final is an awkward mess.

Why the final "throw Krystal overboard" version of the scene in particular instead of the one where Scales talks about Randorn and then Krystal steers the Galleon? This was even replaced extremely late in development since the scene of Krystal waking up after Scales teleports away is still in the game: https://tcrf.net/Star_Fox_Adventures/Dinosaur_Planet_Leftovers#Unused_Cutscene_at_Galleon

Anybody know how far it's possible to progress through the campaign before you hit a wall? To my understanding the proper story progression looks like this:

Intro Warlock Mountain Lightfoot Village *Switch to Sabre* Speeder Chase Snowhorn Wastes Swapstone Hollow *Switch to Krystal* Cape Claw Lightfoot Village Discovery Falls *Collect First Spirit* Warlock Mountain *Switch to Sabre*

Is progression possible beyond this point? I know some people have made it to the Volcano and Desert Force Point Temples - where do those come in?

technically dark ice mines would be next however beating the boss warps you into the void.
In theory you could skip to Volcano Force Point, collect spirit, Fox's warlock mountain Switch to krystal Save & restart, reopening your save should play a cutscene where you get the moon mountain pass key from there its Cloud runner fortress into Desert Force Point

Shabunga in this build seems to be the name of the "Mutant Leader" alchemist mentioned late in the Rare Thief story documents? Also, he seems to be speaking some variant of Dino talk in some lines, possibly conceived as Mutant language? So yeah, not the StoreKeeper, I guess Nintendo Power liked the name and wanted to reuse it for something. Unrelated: one of the earlier lines mentions the "Sauria system", so at this point of development Sauria was not (yet) part of the Lylat system.

I'm surprised that more games didn't try haggling mechanics. Elder Scrolls games used to use your personality stat and/or your mercantile skill to influence prices until Skyrim did away with almost all of the RPG mechanics and then it vaguely used speech, and recently Kingdom Come: Deliverance had a pretty decent bartering system which was accurate to the time period.
You'd think they'd use it more in RPGs but they don't. I think Kid Icarus had a very rudimentary haggling system where you'd shout into he Famicom mic to lower prices.
It always felt good in SFA to save a scarab or two. The whole idea where you'd have to monitor your relationship with the shopkeeper was pretty immersive for the time.

>> No.7478197

I believe so, yes. There's just too much prestige around the game for that to not happen. Where things will get dicey is fan-fic alterations and/or projects to realign the game with Rare's intended story and/or give the game an ending, because it doesn't have one. They never wrote an ending for DP. But they did make a final boss (Drakor). The rom is bursting with content, and a lot of it works just fine. The key is fixing the bugs. There are flags that get set incorrectly, and this causes a cascading failure.

Star Fox Adventures was made under pretty harsh conditions. They were originally gonna release it in November 2001. The N64 build we have is from December 2000. So you're looking at 11 months to do a complete graphical overhaul, integrate a bunch of Star Fox stuff, and generally deliver a polished game. Over the course of this rushed development, more and more of the original game was pared away, while chunks of it were cannibalized and recontextualized in strange ways. Major characters were either removed or only make nameless cameo roles.

Rare have mentioned that the game's release date was constrained by the MS sale (Because the game failed to make the GC launch for obvious reasons.) They had a ridiculous deadline, and they chose to embrace it. It gave them focus. Prevented them second guessing themselves as they made a shippable game.

This is just a shot in the dark, but I have a hunch the electrocution (and, to a lesser extent, the flames in the cabin Scales emerges from in his introduction) was supposed to hint at his boss battle. Maybe fire heals/energizes him and electricity stuns/damages him, and you were supposed to find a way to generate electricity in the arena. Unfortunately, with Scales being the last boss worked on (even Drakor had some work done despite looking entirely different from the final), and the build date being so close to console conversion as >>7478901 says, we'll probably never know unless a dev shares concepts. It's decades old. Not only have people obsessed over DP since the late 90s, but a decade ago, a huge chunk of DP's files were found on a SFA demo disc, including all the audio. I know this is right, but autistically document and the manpower to fix are two completely different things. Any video game historian can and will do the former, the latter requires passion and personal attachment.

Yes but no. Half life 2 was huge and one of the most anticipated games ever, and the source game community was huge. Pick an obscure example. Could anyone get death threats over twelve tales? You can't just abstract this to the point where all prototype games get the same commitment.

The decompile project already has 14 contributors. The SFA kiosk demo files are being used to understand the game a lot better, because they have all their debug stuff intact. The game's save flags are slowly but surely being mapped out. There are also scripts to figure out entities, how they work, what's going wrong with the loading system, etc.

The game was 2-3 months from release. It's in a very advanced state. The problem is that the crashes need to be fixed, the progression flags need to be understood/corrected, and gaps in the content need to be papered over. It doesn't have an ending. It possibly doesn't even have a third Drakor boss phase. (But given how much content is discovered to be magically working if you set the right save flags, I'd reserve judgement.) But it has so, so much content.

3) You cited consideration for smash bros because you could not cite inclusion in smash bros, despite it having 5 releases and approaching 90 characters.

Name another game that was cancelled 2-3 months before release and retooled into a radically shitter version. The thing about most game leaks is that they're BAD. Like, autists can claim they want Prey 2, but all they've have is a tech demo. Dead Island 2 from 2015 leaked, and it's just an open world map to roam with fuck-all to do. Dinosaur Planet is different. It's near-complete, and easily the most atmospheric game of the 5th generation.

If Dinosaur Planet had released in 2001, it would have been showered in 10/10 reviews, and become one of the defining videogames of its generation. It is a masterpiece. A sweeping sci-fi/fantasy epic. The mystique around Dinosaur Planet always lay in the fact people knew how much SFA butchered it. Because we've had all its voice acting for years. An insider posted Rare's story documents, stuff like that. The different between most leaks and DP is that DP exceeded people's wild expectations. GoldenEye XBLA is awesome, but it's GoldenEye. A know quantity. A 10/10 game, sure, but just a shinier version of a 10/10 game. Dinosaur Planet is like finding a lost Michael Jackson album and it's the best material he ever recorded. It's not some disappointing pile of offcuts. People are already obsessed with a build of DP that breaks after like 90 minutes. Once it is patched to play all the way to Drakor without cheating, more and more people will be pulled into its eternal hype sphere.

You're missing the entire point. You could easily cite games like Star Fox 2 or 40 Winks N64. Games that were literally finished and then cancelled for whatever reason. Dinosaur Planet had been in development for about 3 years when it was cancelled, wheras NES games tended to have dev times measured in months.

The reason people accept games like Singularity and BioShock: Infinite being extensively retooled is because the games were unplayable messes. DP was different. It was more akin to Snyder being taken off Justice League and replaced with Joss Whedon, and we all know how that turned out, and how mighty the hype train is behind the Snyder Cut, which is coming out in like 15 days.

Holy grail leaks have to be something that actually exists and has practical value. It's why people wanting Conker's 12 Tales is absolutely meaningless. Dinosaur Planet juxtaposes an extremely comfy vibe with moments of cruelty and brutality and pretty dark themes. A huge amount of this was lost in the SFA conversion. It's like a Don Bluth film put through a Disney filter. All the mood drained out. All the dark and violent bits nerfed. There's something serene about playing as Krystal and riding a log around in the water. SFA is very nice graphically, and there are bits and pieces of DP's atmosphere left, but it was cut to pieces. So much content is gone. So many characters.

The tone of SFA is way, way goofier. Andross is a joke. The antagonists in DP are not a joke. DP paints Drakor's frantic efforts to genocide the inhabitants of an entire planet, including you, as cruel and selfish but not unsympathetic. Of course, people are still figuring out how much of this dialogue was actually implemented when development stopped. But they keep discovering more and more content fully active in the game, just disconnected and unpolished.

Maybe, but that goes along with the story treatment. I do think the Queen CloudRunner dying is unnecessary, especially with Kyte out of the picture, but there are other story beats admittedly done better making more sense in Dinosaur Planet. There are SOME slightly darker moments in Star Fox Adventures that are being overlooked here, like if you lose the SharpClaw racer section: in Dinosaur Planet, the SharpClaw behind Sabre/Fox just looks down menacingly as if telling the player that you got captured in Tricky's place, but in Star Fox Adventures, Fox hopelessly looks down away with his eyes shut as if resigned to his fate, and it looks more like the SharpClaw behind him straight up executes him right as it fades to black. That's more depressing to me. And of course, it's been mentioned that Scales' introduction borders on goofy in Dinosaur Planet and needed refining (heck, when he reappears on the Galleon, there's a stilted gag with one of his men). There's also another advantage the switch to GameCube had: a smoother framerate. I know the build we have isn't final but I doubt the choppiness would have been cleaned up by much given other released N64 games.

Here's one I remember from the LightFoot capture scene - in DP, the LightFoot are more implicit with their threats (showing her what they do to thieves), but in SFA, they're much more direct in saying to "kill the pig" (which kinda begs the question how they even knew about pigs, unless it was supposed to an oblique Pigma reference).

To be fair practically the entire cast was redesigned, partly because switching to 2D meant the game can look more like an evolved version of the previous games instead of its own style. I'm convinced the only reason Flint is still recognizable is because he was the player character shown off the most in the N64 era. I do prefer the N64 designs (or at least clothing) they settled on for Lucas & Claus however, they look more appropriate to the setting than the traditional striped shirts of the GBA final. It's not too far off from the version earlier in development that looked like Ness though.

Is that still true in this build? I listened to the vocal datamine and it seems here they were investigating Scales' technology since one of his ships (presumable the one near Tricky) resembles one of Andross's, and they managed to enlist "Fox" because Randorn was apparently a friend of James.

Speaking of Krystal, this reminds me...
>Dinosaur Planet had her as a tough magical girl with an adoptive father holding a dark secret.
>Star Fox Adventures relegates her backstory to vague mentions that'll never be elaborated upon, made her into a weirdly sexified damsel after the prologue wherein saving her revives Andross.
>Star Fox Adventures turns her into a boring sub-Slippy replacement for Peppy whose role in the story is to get the team back on Sauria which distracts them from the invasion of Corneria City.
>Star Fox Command depicts her as a -bitch-.
>Star Fox Zero re-reboots the series and only gives Sauria a passing mention in The Battle Begins short, finally returning the team to the status quo.

Presumably the one where Scales tosses an unarmed girl off fits better since it's an earlier draft had Drakor attack the palace (see pic), contradicting the "nice little chat"; have that EarthWalker croak before he can reveal who did it, leaving Krystal to assume Scales was just there, and Randorn went along with it at first as he doesn't want to talk about Drakor (and if Krystal asks why he can't take the "pure of heart" trial he'd have being unable to leave the room as an excuse, planting the idea that he may not be telling the whole story). That, and intro text makes Scales' dialog redundant. Adjust a few lines so Krystal denies being from another planet and make it clearer Scales started his conquest now. Literally only thing we miss out is his belt established instead of later in the CloudRunner Fortress but that was the initial plan as SOMEONE was supposed to fall off the ship anyway (albeit after plot-convenient lightning).
>>7473671
Well it never sat right with me that the final game treats the last boss as an infinite retry event. I'd raise stakes and make losing use a Duster/Bafomdad. Also have Scales keep his belt until the very end, SharpClaw taking it signified his downfall but we know now that it was intended as a Kamerian artifact. If Scales has a moment of clarity, he can toss it at the Kamerian Heart, destroying both (tho I notice you call it "his" Heart, so you mean it's part of Drakor's body here?). OR let's say Drakor can warp/cloak himself during first phase, when Scales shows up, he destroys the belt in front of him, disabling Drakor's ability to do it. SharpClaw can be holding something like his claw at the end. And to prevent a "Staff in ending" error, have Krystal lose Fox's PDA while falling after Drakor so Fox can't communicate with her.

DNF2001 needed a lot more work to be finished. This is usually the problem with cancelled games. Think of game like Kameo. It was on the N64, on the GC, on the Xbox, and finally on 360. At no point did they have a near-finished game on any of those platforms due to constant retooling and scope creep and unnecessary project direction changes. Dinosaur Planet is simply unusual in how ambitious it is, how much content it has, and how close to release it was.

Someone had access to the E3 build, but when that little tard threw his tantrum over GoldenEye XBLA last year, it blew the deal. The E3 build would have been useful for reference, and would have contained earlier story draft voice acting and stuff. There's a slim possibility we'll still get it at some point, but don't count on it.

God I can imagine.
>Krystal takes a deep breath then draws Staff.
>Mountainside begins to crumble, she begins to fall down to a strange metaphysical area.
>Star Fox Communicator slips off her wrist, she tries to reach out for it but a metallic hand crushes it, her eyes veer upward to see Drakor laughing down.
>She lands on a floating rock, commence phase one, which is not too dissimilar to the final game.
>During phase two, begins warping like General Scales, a fair bit trickier.
>Phase three, the Galleon makes its appearance in the distance with Scales and three crewmates on it.
>"From Hell's Heart, I take vengeance upon thee..." *takes belt off*
>ohshit.gif
>"...KAMERIAN DRAGON!" *knees belt in half, causing Drakor to spaz out and lose camo*
>omgwtf
>"Animal Girl! I call a truce. For now, just point me at the enemy!" You've gained the Galleon Command! Use it to fry Drakor out of the sky!
>Phase four, Drakor is grounded. It's just you and Drakor, putting your Staff skills to the ultimate test.
>Phase five, Drakor's Heart is exposed. Attack while it's uncovered.
>"If I go down," *rips Kamerian Heart out of chest, holding it aloft* "I'm taking you with me!"
>The Galleon dives down as the ground begins to crumble away.
>"My planet does not die to the likes of you!"
>Scales jumps off the ship dramatically.
>"Long...Live...Dinosaur...Planet!"
>As Scales pierces the Kamerian Heart there is a brilliant white flash blinding Krystal.
>Slowly fade to Krystal. A claw carefully nudges her shoulder. She opens her eyes to see herself surrounded by the SharpClaw. Camera zooms out as she's on the Galleon. She takes a defensive position but they wave their hands and laugh, one of them handing Krystal the broken Kamerian Belt. No sign of Scales or Drakor. She confusingly accepts it and they cheer as the Galleon rises triumphantly towards the palace to dock. (You see later that she made a makeshift Staff sheath out of it.)

It's said to contain most of the final version of DP's files, but obviously doesn't contain the N64 engine driver, however does seem to have the event & object scripting data which would be helpful.
I mean people obviously have an editor & viewer for it.
But there's like no trace of the image ever existing anywhere accessible, only a few gamecube demo disks mentioned, unless that is it.

>Scales was supposed to fall off the ship after flying too close to stormclouds and originally wasn't responsible for Warlock Mt. / Krazoa Palace attack.
What a ridiculously lame villain, you can see Rare started to change events by this build but he still has a ridiculous first few scenes and Krystal more or less still acts like he fell off the ship to his doom. Not to mention the pacing is whack: gotta park the ship, oops lets find Randorn to free Kyte (even though checking in on him is enough motivation with dying Earthwalkers), reach Randorn, get back to the ship, whoops Scales retook his ship, lets go all the way back to Randorn again and finally we make game progress. Save for silly language the final Scales/Galleon introduction is better in every way.
>>7484820
Galleon being reused for something like the final boss would have been a neat way to book-end things but Rare intended on making General Scales totally blind to Drakor's plan and having him go out like a sick puppy. Besides, if he was still around at that point he would try to kill two birds with one stone. His Sharpclaw crew can just defect on their own but have crap aim to justify your guidance.

Having the earlier build would help because "buggy" could just mean for whatever reason they didn't want the boss accessible in this build. (all depends on what the purpose of this build was) it could be alternativly it could be a very stupid bug like for instance the reason the swapstone doesn't teach tricky distract in the cutscene is because for some reason he teaches Tricky Ball instead (regardless of if you have ball or not)

>Why would the boss be functional in an earlier build of the game only to become buggier later on? What's the reason behind this?
In OoT 0.9, loading zones trigger later than the released versions. You wouldn't notice this unless you're an autist. It seems the reason loading zones were changed was because having slightly later loading zones created some issues with certain loading zones. By "fixing" this and making the loading zones trigger quicker, it became possible to clip into said loading zones far more easily like the loading zone past the barrier in Ganon's Castle. This simple "fix" to loading zones actually created more exploitable glitches and skips.

Dinosaur Planet was like the magnum opus of the N64. It shouldn't be surprising that Galadon was functional then wasn't considering the scope of the game, and how they effectively had given up on an N64 release. Why fix something that doesn't need to really be fixed until much later, or at all?

>> No.7487659

>>7485165
Not necessarily buggier. depending on the purpose of the build they could have just disabled Galadon's spawning as it wasnt relevant to what the build was for.
