"cheap" is massively understating it

It's perfectly programmed for what it's intended to do, which is making the player put more quarters into the machine.

Why are you making up arguments to argue against? No one said it was badly programmed. It's just not fun to play with how you have to exploit the AI.

Most fighting games are fun when fighting against the AI
I play most fighting games by myself against the AI more than just playing against someone else
Seriously, I find it fun

>> No.7456050

They're only fun to you because it's the only way you play. When you're used to human opponents having to cheese AI is boring as fuck. It turns it from a multiplayer game of skill and strategy to basically a lame belt scroller where you're stuck on one enemy at a time having to figure out what cheese works best because it has to cheat ( react to inputs not moves, spam charge attacks etc) in order to present a challenge.

Don't get me wrong, enjoy if you have fun with it but understand why most players don't waste time on AI.

No his point is that the FGC fucking hates Mortal Kombat for various mechanics that for some reason are perfectly fine in other fighting games but not in Mortal Kombat or Injustice in general becuase they're American.

>MK sucks because of the block button but it's OK when VF does it
>MK sucks because you can count the number of viable competitive characters on one hand but it's OK when 3S and MvC32 do it
>MK sucks because of dial-a-combos because it's OK when Tekken does it
>MK sucks because of gory finishing moves and the brutalities can instakill in one fight but it's ok when Samurai Shodown does it
>MK9 sucks because they had monthly patches which ruins the """traditonal""" balancing method but strangely no one has ever said anything since then
>MK11 is the one AAA fighter with actual rollback but now you have pros claiming it sucks because actual rollback netplay in a pandemic where you can't go to locals means you can get bodied by some rando who can't afford to go to majors

Spot on.

>> No.7458393

>>7458348
No one has ever given a shit about VF.
3s killed fighting games for years, tons of people in the FGC hated it and hipsters only gravitated to it when it was dead and buried, the game is only notable because of Daigos parry, everyone was playing CvsSNK and Marvel at that time.
Samshow is based around footsies and fundies unlike MK and still no one gives a shit about SamShow
All your other points are retarded
People hate MK because it's a shitty rigid system with no flow or variability, with awful balance, and gameplay designs and decisions based around looking cool or ideas they throw in for no reason and without any thought as to how they actually impact the game, rather than actually being a good fighting game

What killed fighters for a while was the death of arcades and the gap before net code got good enough to make online multiplayer worthwhile. SF3 simply happened to time with that.

arcades died BECAUSE of SF3. they were on life support, but were still the only place where you could play fighting games in any actual form and with a control scheme applicable to them. After SF3 bombed everyone gave up on arcades and the genre itself.

I'm entirely serious. SF3 had a somewhat limp response but it's mostly due to the changing times.

>> No.7459480

>>7459461
Were you even alive when SF3 came out? Fighting games were literally the only thing keeping arcades alive, after MK3 was a let down everyone was just holding on for Capcom to stop releasing version 48 of SF2 and finally put a 3 on the end. When they did and the game was flat garbage it was the final death blow for arcades, the one attraction they had was gone and they had nothing else that you couldn't do on a home console. The most you'd ever see after that was a Hydro Thunder, NFL Blitz or Marvel setup shoved into a corner at some pizza joint

I was 23 when SF3 first hit. Then and now fighters are one of my favorite genres of all time.

>> No.7459568

>>7459480
And by the way to elaborate, arcades were doomed either way. Even if SF3 was a massive hit, it wouldn't have been enough to save that business model. Fighters never really died, they just became more niche for a while. Really, what kept them going was console versions being so inferior to the arcade. Once good ports came the writing was on the wall. But in the years before good online multiplayer for them there was definitely a lull where most of the play was in dorm rooms and local get togethers mostly by the hardcore fans.

>the FGC fucking loves it.

I'm gonna need to see some proof of that.

>> No.7462108

>>7459568
Right. Arcade's dying had little to do with SF3. People having the ability to purchase SF Alpha series and MK3/Trilogy and other major arcade ports on PS1 and Saturn was more a cause of the arcade death. Internet gaming becoming more prevalent didn't help the arcades, either. I knew my local arcade was fucking dead in the water back in 1998/99 when they cleared out half of the cabinets on the floor and installed an "internet cafe" for PC gaming.

>> No.7462127

>>7459432
Normalfags who don't actually play fighting games love it. The FGC does not, but a retard like you wouldn't know anything about that.

>> No.7462723

>>7462108
Exactly. I think it really started in 4th gen and the result was inevitable. Getting good at a fighter means hundreds to thousands of games and getting there one quarter at a time is a pricey expenditure. Once you could just buy a cart and play for hours on end with your friends even if it wasn't a perfect port, the choice was pretty easy. The only downside was that unless you were getting together in larger groups which was rare unless you were obsessed, arcades were the only place to test your skills against other people. That wasn't enough to keep them a viable business model though which is why pizza joints and movie theatres were the final death throws of arcades.

The fun is in figuring out their patterns and devising counter-attack. In UMK3, the only one that kills this is playing against Jade - it's just too cheap. The special attacks bring something new to each AI, too.

>> No.7463024

I don't think that's even close to the same ballpark of fun as playing against an actual person, AI competitively is far too simple and doesn't really react to you. But if you dig it then more power to you.

By design they need to either over or almost too hard to continue by that point. Any arcade game that doesn't have quarters going into it fast and consistently is a waste of space and electricity.

The guy who places like this would revere who can plop one coin in and play Gradius for an hour or more were the bane of arcade owners.
