>> No.7453581

It works in games like strategy and RPG titles, but in action games the perspective can be a challenge sometimes. Moving and shooting in Crusader was a challenge due to the controls and the way that aiming works, sometimes the projectiles that should clearly be hitting their target don't because... just because. Flaws that hurt an otherwise excellent game.

"Gimmick" carries an unfair negative connotation. This was a way to implement 3D gameplay and detailed environment visuals when it wouldn't have been possible otherwise. But it also required skilled developers to leverage it effectively, so yeah, in many cases the negative spin would be justified.

Aside from your standard arenas and DnD/turn based type of games I don't see it used that much, the current gimmick is to do 2D pixelshit or 3D with old PSX filters for your upcoming indie game, stuff like >>7453027 is hard to find just because it feels "awkward", I only can remember Project Zomboid as a somewhat different isometric game but I'd like to see more platformers trying something with the isometric camera, it could be done but faggots that complain about tank controls are the reason for game devs not to try different/new mechanics for game genres

It was great except when the Fallout games thought you should barely be able to feel around for a door from the north side of a wall (and be unable to click it if it's too close in the transparency bubble that forms around you because it's completely transparent at that point, but also can't be clicked if it's fully occluded either).

Every other circumstance, the answer is that it's great.

Style of modelling is thus. There is a particular tetrahedron made of four equal to each other but not equal-sided triangular faces. Said tetrahedron is particular in that it is possible to glue square-cell grid onto each side to that lines intersecting each edge click perfectly one into another. In other words, for unfiltered Quake-alike 3D texels flow one into another across each edge if textures are aligned correctly on all four sides.

If is possible to use such tetrahedrons in a sort of 3D mosaic, in order to construct surfaces with textures flowing along them hitchlessly. Such surfaces consist of equal but not equal-sided triangular faces, that have to be aligned between themselves and in regard to texturing perfectly.

There is a glitch of sort to it however of a neurophysiological nature, it is impossible to overcome. Suppose you have such tetrahedron, each of four sides with its texel grid, aligned in conjunction between themselves, it becomes apparent especially near the vertices, said tetrahedron consists of zilch. There are no bricks to it, texels depict nothingness beyond them, in other words this is visual trickery.
Your mind refuses to regard objects mapped alike as valid landmarks in order to measure how much you have moved or turned yourself in a virtual world. In other words you consistently mis-aim and generally get lost in so nicely mapped locales.
BG is a very tricky case of such modelling due to a) sporting static angled camera, moreover bird's eye view - and b) trying very hard to pass it for visual realism.

Evolva. That's one of those things modelled alike.
That's all.

> the controls suck something fierce.
Which is hugely ironic given that a) it uses the same engine as Ultima 8; b) U8 has exceptionally shit platforming they had to remove in a patch.
