Playing pic related. How is anyone supposed to beat this? It took me like 50 tries to beat the boss of the 5th level, and then I was too burnt out to continue playing, so I now I have to start over next time.

Well yeah I unlocked about 20 ships now. I keep forgetting what each ship does until I try it out. Guess I should pay more attention to that on my next run.

Also, how does the automatic battle mode work? I get fucked every time.

i don't get why this game is shat on so much, it's really fun for a stoic shmup and i'm enjoying it more than gradius 5 and other ps2 horis.

It's quite good, but unfortunately it's deliberately moody and slow paced which although atmospheric and full of anticipation when you first play it means it's a real chore when you're playing a level (especially the snooze-fest first one) for the inevitable hundreth time. Compare it to R-Type Delta that's consistently exciting all the way through.

the 5th boss is a horrible pain in the ass OP, there's no way around it. You might want to try a ship that has a powerful charge attack to damage it more quickly. I think staying in the center during its gravity traction is a death-trap as well, but I can't remember a proper safe-spot during that attack.

one thing a lot of people don't realize about stage 5 is that the visual distortion is tied to your ship speed. The slower you are the less the distortion. I tend to keep my speed at 2 at most during the stage, maybe 3 if I need to zoom somewhere.

most ships can power up their wave cannon twice. Some can power it up 3 times or more and the power scaling becomes absolutely ludicrous. 3 or 4-times charged can usually instakill a boss (one ship can charge up to 5 times but it takes what feels like a whole minute to do).

charging your beam, ie, holding down the shot button (not autofire, obviously). Your charge attack is called the Wave Cannon. I'm pretty sure the R-Museum notes which ships can charge up to multiple times, or you can consult a guide like the one on slateman's site.

Yes it was. R-Type Tactics 1/2 take place a decade before the Operation Last Dance. Until R-type Final 2 comes out and confirms it takes place after it FINAL is the last game chronologically.
