What GOOD games were there for n64? It has a handful of truly amazing games but then a sea of mediocre ones. I WANT to like n64 more.

>zelda x2
>mario (64, kart, tennis)
>the worms armeggeddon port was actually good too
>smash bros original (melee is better tho obviously)
>a few japan-only translated games i found
>pokemon puzzle and stadium are above average but not quite top tier
>??

Goldeneye I 100% think aged terribly, controls like crap. I've looked at tons of n64 games and most are mediocre at best. Meanwhile for example SNES has literally hundreds of fun delicious pixel games.

Please change my mind and post top tier n64 games. Thank you.

Paper Mario
Banjo
Conker
Star Fox
DK

If you’re feeling really adventurous, you can try some lesser known games like Shadow Man, Buck Bumble, or Jet Force Gemini.

Thanks.

I also just remembered bomberman 64 multiplayer was super fun as a kid. Not sure if it holds up but it probably does.

Has anyone played the animal crossing n64 original japanese english patched and if so, is it any good? I know it lacks a lot of the gamecube content (fair enough), but I wonder if it'd be fun still

I thought the N64 was the only console that made controllers for 3 handed people. I was wrong. The Nintendo 3DS is also made for 3-handed people, since you need to hold the 3DS with both hands, as well as holding the stylus pen.

I say this because all the 6th gen consoles could produce real, quality 3D graphics. And all games were disc-based so the soundtracks and voice acting were a huge step above cartridge games (looking at you n64).
The Genesis and SNES, while not the pinnacle of 2D hardware, have the best and most iconic 2D games. Going back and playing 3D 5th gen titles (especially racing games) can be a nostalgia-wrecking experience for me. Can't believe I used to come home from school and play vid related every day, it looks horrible

It isn't. Real smash bros is a solid and fast paced fighting game that handles like a dream. The sequels are like playing on ice.

I've always maintained that while snes/genesis were the peak of pixel graphics/gameplay and are still great even today, the jump into 3d was incredibly clunky and very few games of that entire era hold up.

Like OP said, just look at goldeneye. Yikes.

Some obvious exceptions from this era are Zelda and ps1 final fantasies and some games mentioned ITT, but the majority of early 3d era isn't that great if you ignore nostalgia. Even San Andreas on ps2 sucks (gameplay, not just graphics), and that's an entire generation later.

I think 16 bit holds up so well because the games aren't too complicated and the art style still looks fresh a lot of the time because it wasn't supposed to be "realistic". It's like a whole seperate world from 3d so it isn't as hard to get back into it without just feeling like "this game sucks compared to [any modern game]"

>the art style still looks fresh a lot of the time because it wasn't supposed to be "realistic"
Agree wholeheartedly. 16 bit games are on a different timeline, while the 5th gen games that tried to look “realistic” aged very poorly

>Like OP said, just look at goldeneye.
You're forgetting that OP is a shit-eating tool that couldn't tell his ass from his elbow.

You know there are some games that genuinely are love it or hate it. Donkey Kong 64 is a love it or hate it game - some people really love it, others hate it. It completely divides people. Final Fantasy 8 is another game that divides people - some people love it and some people hate it. But if that was the case with Goldeneye you would see it at the time it was released just like those games!

A game doesn't just turn into a love-it/hate-it game over the years. What happens sometimes is people don't give good games a chance, especially if they can't figure out what to do.

tl;dr: If you don't like Goldeneye you are a shit-eating turd who doesn't understand it and gave up on it.

Now whenever this is pointed out someone always says "i beat everything, unlocked all cheats and still hate it" - first of all you have no idea if this person is larping or not, secondly they're very rare. Sure some people might actually hate it, but it's not realistic that so many people who just happen to talk shit about the N64 (including concern trolling like OP) also shit on it.

N64 and PS1 had equally good libraries. Maybe it's my age but when I think of games I truly love from either system I come back with about 10, while I feel like consoles before and after I could list hundreds
