I really want to like this game but I can't. It's way too grindy and it's way too much work to get all the cards on a default character. A little better game balance could've made this a classic. Shame.

>> No.7442167

Yeah, using the card cheat is a must. Stupid idea that should have been implemented as boss drops instead of constant grind

>> No.7442173

get a completed save file and start the game as FIREBALL

The only thing I disliked was how running couldn't be toggled, and maybe how many varieties of beastmen there were.

Fireball or card cheat.
Knight Mode is the only way you should bother with the arena.
Thief mode is worth beating Knight mode.

>> No.7442196

Card Mode, my man. Rejigs the game so cards are now found about the castle where rando armor/food would be. Earlier areas only have the less OP cards and you have to beat the Arena to get the summons, which is the only downside, but progression is so much more fun this way and I used card combos a ton more. Armor is now enemy drops, which works fine, as is food, which is quite farmable if you know where. No clue how it affects the alternate 'modes' but as a plain save run it's enjoyable. http://www.romhacking.net/hacks/4725/

Get a save that unlocked the other modes and play it on shooter or thief mode. Thief mode starts you with 1600 luck (more than you'll ever get in Vampirekiller mode) and grants you 160 per level. You'll be swimming in drops.

This anon is kinda right. I've beaten this game multiple times when I was 13. All you need is a whip buff to up your damage (flame is readily available and not rare) and a shield (I usually go with poison to help with annoying enemies and the final boss fight).

You dont need all of the cards nor does the game expect you to get all the cards. The first mode you unlock after beating the game once gives you ALL the cards.

So relax, stop trying to 100% the game, and go kill Dracula.

Seconding these two, anon. CoTM isn't a game where you need to level grind nor do you need any of the cards to beat it. Hell, you can actually beat the whole thing whip only and no armor, even. All you really need is timing on your attacks and patience to not try and rush enemies and get greedy with hits. Heck, Nathan actually tanks mooks most of the time.

I get where you're coming from, though, because basic enemies and bosses have a lot of health and take so many fucking hits from a regular whip that you would think the cards were intended, but it does indeed take so much grinding just to get them or potentially anything in this game that you'll probably overlevel doing that anyway. Makes me wonder what Team Kobe were going for exactly and if they had enough time for it.
>I really want to like this game
Then unironically keep at it, because that probably means there's something you do in fact like about CoTM that could maybe lead to you developing an appreciation for the rest of it.

>>7442167
Also this, fuck CoTM's drop system in general. Come to think of it, is there a hack that places cards where you can just pick them up?

Did I say that, anon? Or was I suggesting that if OP can find at least one thing to like in the game, he could maybe find something to like about the rest of it? I've done that with other CV games both classic and metroidvania where I got frustrated because of one aspect but kept coming back because of another one to the point that the latter was no longer a problem because of the former.

Or do I need to spoonfeed you and tell you that no, you don't have to fucking play a game you don't like?

I beat this game literally two days ago. The grind for the last two cards (Uranus and pluto) from the candle monsters was very frustrating and nearly made me rage quit. Didn't bother with the battle arena, it was a purely stupid game design to not allow MP use at all. It's a good castlevania game but the next installments on the gba and ds games are superior.

yeah you shouldn't really be doing that to beat the game outside of a last resort. 100% completion for your normal mode file, sure, but that's probably the only reason you should even bother. I would say that you should play Magician mode, but since you have the cards, there's almost no reason to do so save for playing the whole game with all the cards from the start with some redone balancing.

And yeah, Battle Arena is dumb. They buff all the enemies without telling you and force to fight them all grouped together instead of patiently one on one despite the main game rarely if ever doing that.

>Equip myself entirely with equipment that boosts the Luck stat
>Use in combination with the card combo that boosts Luck stat
>Grinding for card drops becomes quick and trivial
The only real problem with this system is that only a very small selection of enemy types actually drop cards and you don't know which ones they are. Having to look up a guide outside of the game to find out which ones isn't fun, they should have just put a special border around the names of enemies that drop the cards, problem solved.

You're gonna take those kinda muddy graphics and chiptune and you're gonna like it, because otherwise you'll be missing out on an enjoyable game that helped codify and even introduced a mechanic or two that later games would take advantage of, along with a nice mystery thriller-esque story about a Belmont and his fuckup ninja best friend.

But yeah, really, HoD gave us dash cancelling and also makes divekicking and slidekicking just as effective as whipping. The game isn't hard when it comes to combat, but Juste's zipzoom abilities makes that and seeing how fast you can get through areas fun anyway. IN fact, this game probably more than the other metroidvanias barring maybe SoTN actually puts more emphasis on figuring out what you're supposed to do and where you're supposed to go than probably anything else with a real nice, spooky sense of setting. You won't get multiple weapons or souls or anything since the main player character is a Belmont, but you do get whip attachments and numerous spellbooks that give you up to five different attacks with whatever singular subweapon you have on hand, along with some stuff like rings that alter how base subs work or even floating boots. People bitch about the level design and backtracking, but outside of some places being rather flat and snakey, it really shouldn't be that big a deal since Juste can move so fast and you can crouch in front of particular doors for teleporting around.

I wouldn't try to get every single card bro. Just play organically and use the ones you get. It doesn't sound like you enjoy farming them, and the game gives you access to all of them right off the bat after you beat it once.

>> No.7446161

I always thought the first thing you get for beating the game being wizard mode where you have every card from the start made it pretty clear the game doesn't expect you to collect them in a single run. It's more of a character building aspect with divergence, not a "catch 'em all" thing.

You just suck

I made it to shooter mode as a kid. Picked it up recently and cheated to give myself levels. Sped through the game to unlock thief mode. Definitely enjoying all of the drops, but you're a lot weaker than the default mode. Makes getting the cards and everything else a lot easier, but I mostly would use the salamander + venus buff to increase damage or griffin run shield.

Decided to look and see if there have been any hacks over the years that fix that, but the only one I've found that does anything like that so far seems to more or less just replace HoD's ost with stuff from other games and only a few are updated versions of the game's music.

https://www.romhacking.net/hacks/5483/

Which is rather dumb if you ask me, it's not like you can't find decent enough remixes of HoD's soundtrack.
