Silver Surfer for the NES. It was made infamous by the AVGN for supposedly being too hard, but I love it. I actually did a run of only shooting at bosses, similar to their run of playing Castlevania only using the whip at bosses, and I got far enough. I beat several levels until it became literally impossible to continue.

Pretty good actually, as you can only quit what you start. I recommend you try the no-shooting run and see for yourself. When I said impossible I didn't mean "too hard". Only in Firelord can you even get to level 3, in the rest of the worlds you can't even get that far. The beatable parts of Emperor were hilariously hard too.

My TV has a bunch of emulated MSX games (I don't know why), and I distinctly remembered one of them being a top-down shooter with a knight. I thought it was the game you're talking about, but it was actually another game called Knightmare.
Another game it has is Pippols, which is a sort-of shmup with a farmer.
