box was truky peak, containing up to 4 player multiplayer for original rule, tsu rule, sun rule, and an updated ~n rule. (which can be mixed and matched between players)

it also has tournament bracket mode, a single player ladder gauntlet, and a decently sized jrpg where random battles are puyo matches.

what makes it stand out from other games in the genre is just how interactive and engaging it is; puyo for example is about setting up a combo, then once you do you just take your hand off the controller for 10+ seconds as it plays out. But with panel de pon you never stop playing the game, you're dynamically extending combos as they play out. It's hard to find arcade puzzlers that do something similar

Puzzle League isn't a great multiplayer game because there's very little strategy when it comes to multiplayer interaction. Sure, you can send combos to break up your garbage, and you can end chains early to prevent the opponent from raising, but it's pretty shallow. For the most part both players end up with endless garbage blocks, and just have to wait for the other player to mess up.
Puyo Puyo requires you to be reactive to your opponent. When your opponent sends a big chain, you have to send a counter chain or you'll die. You can goad the opponent with disruptive smaller chains. The way you build your board determines which strategies are available to you.
I really enjoy Puzzle League, but the multiplayer isn't as interesting as more interactive games.

the rpg is definitely playable without runes though, its super linear, and even without a guide you'll have no problem beating it. battles are just puyo matches after all. so no memorizing text for spells or whatever.

It kinda feels like these kind of puzzle games with multiplayer modes are a thing of the past, most puzzle games that aren't about...actual puzzles in single challenges and levels tend to be match-3's on mobiles that usually are single player, or it's some random indie game that has some weird art style that lacks the charm of the old games.

I guess Tetris recently got Tetris 99 and Tetris Effect Connected, and there are the recent Puyo Puyo Tetris games which i haven't played but they seem to be fine.

The only thing that matters is the core gameplay which has been endlessly reproduced for decades by now, yet there are people unironically pining for Lip in Smash Bros. The series identity is awash with random tie-ins and it's only just now that the states get the fairy version on NSO due to Nintendo being cheap about the Tetris copyright royalties. Maybe they'll see the success of that and make a new PDP game in earnest, if only to keep it from being bland, but I still don't really get the preference beyond eye candy. Most normalfag mutts will just point to the Yoshi's Island or Pokémon versions when pressed about it anyways.

While gameplay is the most important factor, presentation matters too. Personally speaking, although Planet Puzzle League has the best soundtrack in the series, it had no theme and I felt little incentive to get better at it, unlike PdP where I fought to 1cc hard mode and get a different ending. This new vibrant world added to the charm and it's a shame burgers got those big brand reskins because girls have cooties.
