how long will the capacitors last on 6th gen power supplies?

>> No.7433124

who cares. by the time enough of them go that you can't reasonably afford a new unit, the s0i scientists will just come up replacement capacitors and cheap refurb services to ensure that you can continue to avoid emulating for years to come.

Most are fine unless they have been stored in humid and hot places. A visual inspection to make sure they are not leaking/bulging should be good.

For example you should check your original xbox psu. Those things get extremely hot. The main reason to check that area in particular is to resolder the ac port connections and header on the motherboard for power. Over time they develop cold solder joints and can arc causing fires. This is why most Xbox ac cord has a fuse built in to prevent it. One should open it up anyhow to replace the clock capacitor and thermal paste on the gpu/cpu anyhow as general maintenance.

Here is another reason you shouldn't replace capacitors all willy nilly in switch mode power supplies.

https://electronics.stackexchange.com/questions/112541/can-i-replace-a-general-purpose-electrolytic-capacitor-with-a-low-esr-capacitor#:~:text=Generally%2C%20low%20ESR%20can%20be,can%20get%20them%20very%20easily).

the general notion that you can replace general purpose capacitors with low esr is a massive blanket statement. There are corner cases where doing so can have oscillation or make the circuit behave different causing unintended effects.

One thing to keep in mind with these switch mode psus is some of them are picky about whatesr they have. Do a quick google search on people recapping sega saturn psus and having lines appear in their picture afterwards when it was fine before. I believe the problem was a transistor/regulator that started behaving after the recap iirc.

so tl;dr I don't think cap replacement for everything as a general rule is a good idea.

You should all be glad that NiCad batteries are no longer used, if you are a retro collector and have boards with NiCads on, immediately snip them off and replace, when they leak it will eat the board until and unfixable state.
Check the top corner of this PCB, this isn't even the worst I've had to deal with. Capacitors bursting are far less of a hassle than this, they just spew out cotton wadding.

it's not. it's uneducated morons trying to destroy their japanese children's toys. I'm so sick of seeing "installed muh ps1 digital and recap and nothing works now". how many of these faggots are actually buying name brand caps to redo their boards. the aliexpress/amazon grab bag is not going to be better in the long run than the 1980s nichicon caps in your NES
regular recapping came from the arcade community because any 2nd or 3rd hand unit in your basement probably had been running in a hot arcade for hours, then shut on/off a lot, stored in bad conditions, etc. Fuck, i've seen some boards covered it rat piss and shit, sand, whatever. recapping is the minimum. especially for displays.
If it's performing well in it's current environment, don't fuck with it. that's production tech 101. If you keep your consoles in a cool, dry place like your house then they don't need to be recapped every 10 years.
There are cases where recaps fix things because they caught a bad cap. you can check caps for shorts or get an ESR tester. Recapping is just a shotgun approach to compensate for lackluster troubleshooting skills.
Finally certain caps do just leak because of bad production. these are well known cases (game gear, certain MSX, xbox). It's not like these systems need a recap "just because"

Lol in the CRT realm there's a "PVM Tech" named Pat who will "refurbish" pro monitors with Chinese capacitors. He doesn't even do all of them also. You can buy the chink kits for 400-500% price if you're too lazy to order Japanese ones for yourself.
