Played this with a friend some months ago and it is a really fun co-op game. We simply could not get past level 12 "Mars Needs Cheerleaders" though.

It is no casual game.

it gets decently hard pretty quickly, and it doesn't help that using later level codes gimps you since you don't have the items you would have otherwise grabbed earlier

Herc's Adventures is basically an spiritual successor of this series, and it has a very fun and adventurey open world approach instead of being level-based

Yeah, I think it's in level 6 or so that those chainsaw guys start to appear and man, does the difficulty pick up from there.

I think I can go far with some practice but my friend is a casual player and not as good as me, so he often dies first and we reset. I'll try beating the game solo one of these days.

Yeah, it's pretty hard. To be honest I've never had anyone to play it with, and not just because I have no friends, but because both players need to be at least decent. Passwords can help you get a recon of the later levels but they start you with no shit, so it's not really viable to beat the game that way, you really need to get good.
Also yeah, Herc's Adventure is pretty fun and much more chill to casually go through.

Seconding this. My brother and I played it a bunch growing up, and we just finished a playthrough this week. Only takes about 2-3 hours, but it's cozy.

Also shouting out Xeno Crisis and Kaizou Choujin Schbibinman Zero, two new-old co-op games worth checking out.

I find the Genesis one inferior. I don't want to fall for the sovl meme, but can't quite tell why. Maybe because it's shorter? Also, I really like that P1's characters are all male, while P2's are female on the older version.

I would say that you just suck ass, but I played it with my cousin before I was in double digits, so I'm biased. I played it about a decade ago with my buddy whom never played it and he had trouble with it, so you may be right. Fuck those snakeoids though.
