The sad thing is most of its game didn't make full use of its power. Only the European and American ones did. Most if not all Japanese GBA games are just generic 2D games that could as well be played on the much cheaper and less powerful Wonderswan Crystal or even the decade old atari lynx/game gear. Japanese GBA games are the reason why GBA got its "handheld SNES" reputation. Are jap devs retarded or something?

And speaking of 2D games, western developers were much better at those too. They made both hand drawn sprites and 3D looking computer rendered sprites. Their hand drawn games look crisp, vibrant, and solid, like pic related. Their computer rendered sprites look elegant and leaps and bounds better than anything you could find on the SNES, even better than Yoshi's Island and Donkey Kong. On the other hand, Japanese GBA games have blurry graphics, dull colours, and badly drawn generic anime sprites. They're fucking ass. The japs didn't understand how to make GBA graphics look good.

And isn't it crazy to think that while European devs were making full 3D, fully textured, open world games for the GBA, Nintendo couldn't even make a Star Fox game for it? They were so far behind. The last few years of the 32 bit era was the start of the decline of Japanese game industry, and by the GBA era the gap became massive and obvious.

All Japanese GBA games were slow and repetitive to me for some reason. Zelda The Minish Cap and Swordcraft Story were the only game I completed, and I regret completing Swordcraft Story, the gameplay was repetitive and hollow but I played it solely to progress the story, I didn't feel rewarded. All of my proudest GBA buys have been western games. They were more fun to play because they weren't artificially engrossing.
