Guys, is a Master System worth getting? Is there any spectacular games for it?

Sonic games for SMS are actually quite different from Genesis and are really good.

Also wonder boy.

>> No.741940

Absolutely. I've had my Power Base Converter for a while now and my favourite games are Shinobi, Heart of Darkness and Castle of Illusion. A number of SMS ports are superior to the NES counterparts as well, such as Bubble Bobble and Star Wars.

That's because the Game Gear is a Master System. Literally; you can even get an adaptor for it so it plays the cards.

I need to get a SMS. I never owned one as a kid. Never even knew anyone that had one. They were almost non-existent around here. I feel like I'm missing a piece of gaming history because I started my Sega adventures at the Genesis.

No, you can't, some GG roms were hacked to run on a master system.
However, the Game Gear has more vram and colors than the SMS, and the Master System has a larger resolution than the Game Gear.

TecToy converted some GG games to the SMS in Brazil, because portable consoles never reall caught on here.

Some Game Gear games were hacked to work on the Master System.
Even though both systems are really similar, the Game Gear has more vram and colors than the Master System, and Master System games run at a larger resolution than the Game Gear, making them incompatible with each other.

The alladin one plays a bit like Prince of Persia + adventure game. Pretty weird, worth as a curiosity.

I think we named everything.

The thing about later titles though, is that they felt like they were trying to emulate their 16 bit counterparts too much, but don't feel quite right. Gunstar Heroes, Earthworm Jim, Tempo, they look nice in screenshots but ingame it's a choppy, slow mess, Tempo is interesting because it's a completely redesigned game from the 32x version.

This thread has piqued my interest in Master System and Game Gear.

Are there any important general facts about them? ie. This variant won't play X games, the system is region-free, some common hardware problems that are easy to fix, etc?

I'm thinking stuff like NES lockout chip or replacing the 72 pin connector, stuff like that but for these two platforms.

Thanks all for allowing an interesting thread to prosper about what seems to be a not well known system (mostly in the US).

The Master System has some great games, but keep in mind that with a good Mega Drive flash cart you can play all MS games on the Mega Drive. Although I own Master Systems I only use them for games I own the original cartidges for. Even then I plug in a Mega Drive controller because the Master System controllers are rather poor.

So if you're a flash cart guy, don't bother with the MS hardware unless it's a Japanese one with improved sound.

Sega's first game console was the SG-1000. It was very similar to the Colecovision--same CPU, same video chip and same audio chip, though the two consoles aren't compatible. Sega sold several versions of the SG-1000 in Japan and in other Pacific Rim countries, some of which were home computers with keyboards (again similarly to Coleco, who sold the Coleco Adam, which was a home computer that played Colecovision cartridges)

The first Sega console that wasn't a minor variation of the SG-1000 was the Mark III. It was backward compatible with SG-1000 games but supported much more advanced graphics in games natively written for it. It's called the Mark III because the last SG-1000 variant to be sold in Japan was called SG-1000 II.

The Master System is the international version of the Mark III. Like the Famicom and the NES, the consoles and cartridges look very different and aren't compatible with each other.

The Mark III and the Master System have an expansion slot on the back for peripherals. AFAIK nothing was sold in North America that plugged into the expansion slot (the 3D glasses plugged into the card slot) but one of the peripherals you could get in Japan was the FM Sound Unit, which allowed games written to support it to play enhanced music.

The biggest source of confusion about 8-bit Sega hardware is probably the Japanese Master System. The Japanese Master System looks almost exactly like an international Master System, but has the following differences:

1) The cartridge slot is designed for Mark III cartridges, not international Master System cartridges
2) The Reset button present on both the Mark III and the international Master System is replaced by a Turbo (autofire) button
3) The FM Sound Unit that was a peripheral for the Mark III is built into the console

In other words, it looks like a Master System, but it's really more like a redesigned and enhanced Mark III.

You're both right. The GG contains a mostly improved variation of the Master System's hardware. Master System games will still run on it, the main problem being the decreased resolution making it impossible to see things that you are supposed to see on a TV. Games did have to be reprogrammed for the GG, but mostly to fit the action onto the smaller screen.

It's not particularly difficult to blindly copy a full screen of tile indices to the tile map every few frames. >>744403 implied that it was some kind of programming feat that Yuji Naka is a god for pulling off, when really, the impressive thing here is all the cartridge space spent on those tiles, and the judicious use of palette swapping to keep that one set from getting stale.

ROM wasn't that much cheaper in the 16-bit generation, so it still follows that if you wanted to have more variation than one or two environments, you have to cut the size of the 3D view down. Again, it's not "Yuji Naka is a god, these idiots can't even do full screen mazes on the SNES," but "damn all of these static graphics take up a lot of space, and we still have to fit the actual game in..."
