Why didn't the Genesis stay relevant after 1991? It's like it dominated he market and then suddenly once a little completion arrived from the SNES it completely folded.

>> No.7405502

I don't know, I don't remember it that way. I got a Genesis for Christmas in 1994 or 1995 (I forget) and I was excited as fuck. Didn't give a shit about the Super Nintendo. I remember mostly seeing Genesis commercials, and I would say about an equal number of friends had a Genesis vs an NES, and not very many people had an SNES. This was in Northern California.

You could buy a model 3 genesis and cardboard box versions of games until 2001.

Yet the Genesis version of Samurai Shodown was much better. It really just depends on the game. It also depends on what versions of Street Fighter 2 we are comparing. There are some that are good on Genesis, and some that aren't.

It was quite the step forward from pic related, what people generally thought was the NES, despite more detailed games like Mega Man coming out later on the console's life cycle.

>Sega foolishly rushed to market games for dead consoles like 32x because muh 32bits.
at first i had no idea what Sega was thinking, but looking back, it kind of makes sense.
One of the biggest complaints about the SNES at the time was there was no backwards compatibility with NES games and consumers felt ripped off. Moms woulds would complain to retailers that their sons nes games didnt work in their nintendos. The 32x was made to combat this.
>rushed it out
The 32x come out at the same time as the playstation and Super Fx chip? Seems like 32 bits was right on time and necessary for competition

Megadrive had more market share than Nintendo up till 93 or 94, I forgot which. Then Sega went full retard and parents refused to buy Sega for their kids out of spite.

>The 32x was made to combat this.

No, the master system converter was made to combat that, and not because Nintendo moms were complaining but because when the Megadrive came out, Sega had a relatively small fanbase who they had to take care of. They needed to please their fans who had Master Systems, so they released an adapter.

32x was made to combat the Jaguar. Sega's boss wanted some new Megadrive gadget that would make the console viable against the Atari toilet, first they wanted an SVP passthrough cart, but then SoA told them they may as well make something more powerful that can also fix the sound and colours which was an area where the console was significantly lagging behind. They sketched up the 32x concept on a napkin in a hotel, and decided to make it in one year, not even knowing that Japan was busy launching the Saturn at the same time.

Then the Saturn sold like mad in Japan because Virtua Fighter was the biggest thing over there, and they ordered SoA to cease everything and focus on the Saturn and launch it immediately. Despite having the 32x, tons of Megadrive projects, the Nomad, the Pico, etc all alive and having healthy markets. They had to drop it all and launch the Saturn early, even though they had no games after launch and having only few thousands of units to sell in the entire country.

>not even knowing that Japan was busy launching the Saturn at the same time.
They knew about the Saturn. In that same meeting where they drew up the design they decided to go with the Dual SH-2 setup because they liked that part of the Saturn and felt it could help transition development.

DKC, like most other SNES exclusives, has more substance than most of the Genesis library. The SNES having better graphics was a cherry on top. There's a reason SNES was able to compete directly with the Saturn and PS1 while the Geneshit more or less died immediately on New Year's Day 1995.

I grew up in the Midwest in suburbs near basically the only two major cities around here and literally everyone until the PS2 came out exclusively played Nintendo systems or PC games.
There were maybe a -few- people who had the Playstation but a vast majority had the N64 instead. So when people talk about which consoles had market dominance back in the day it all sounds like nonsense to me, I had one friend who had a PS1 and we all thought it sucked because load times and only 2 controller ports.

>> No.7406486

>>7405889
I'd argue that the CD itself wasn't a mistake. It sold 2million units, had Sega supported it PROPERLY the way Hudson/NEC supported the PC Engine CD in Japan, it could have been a hell of a lot more successful and substained the system's lifespan until around 94 or 95.

Needed less shitty FMV games and more actual good games like Sonic CD (a game that sold so well more than 75% of people with a Sega CD owned it). Had they marketed great games like Lords of Thunder and Final Fight CD and not movie trash like Sewer Shark and Night Trap the system would have caught on more.
But this is Sega, Sega is a garbage company run by retards who don't know what they're doing. The failure of the CD was inevitable under mismanagement. The failure of the 32x (hell, an idea as blatantly bad as the 32x) was inevitable under mismanagement. The absolute abject failure of the Saturn was inevitable under mismanagement. The failure of the Dreamcast despite its quality and forward thinking featureset was inevitable under mismanagement.

>Night Trap has gotten those rereleases for the same reason The Room and Troll 2 got a blu-ray release.

Night Trap is pretty weird. because it was filmed in 1987 for a home console that was planned on using VHS tapes. The project was in development by Hasbro. Night Trap didn't get a release until 1992, with the Sega CD. It was released on the 3DO, DOS and 32X-Sega CD. But didn't get a release until a couple years ago when someone found a higher quality VHS tape of the footage to rip from.

Gameplay wise I thought it was closer to the arcade than the SNES version. I'm still amazing that Sega shipped the MD version with a buggy PCM driver. With the audio patch, I'd have the MD version over the reverb-tastic PCM and weird SFX of the SNES version any day of the week.
