What in the hell makes Klonoa the most sought-after platformer on the PS1? It's pretty cute and charming, sure, the visuals definitely have that retro aesthetic appeal but it's really short, easy, and childish. Why does it go for hundreds of dollars these days?

and before you reply
>durr just emulate it retard
Not the point of this thread. I've played it and I'm curious about what makes it so expensive.

It's classic hidden game fodder, quality game that went by relatively unknown. Also a lot of people know about the series since 2 was on a PS2 demo disc that came with the console.

Does that really justify what it's going for now? By that definition then Crash Bandicoot should be going for 150+ on ebay

It's a good game that age well and since it didn't sell that much back then now it became a rarity, other games like Crash Bandicoot aren't on that level because they sold a lot more and there are a lot of copies of it on sale

Other game with a similar case to Klonoa is the Tomba! series, both are beloved by the people that played them back then but because they didn't sell that much now they're a rarity and rather expensive to come by unless you settle with the Japanese version

It's the best platformer on the PS1 and one of the best post 8/16-bit platformers in existence. It looks incredible on a CRT, it plays fluidly, the writing is actually competent and emotionally evocative, and the soundtrack is godlike

lmao I just 100%'d this a month or two ago but did you not play this since you were a kid? It's extremeely kiddy as fuck lole mainly the story, but the gameplay is pretty simple too. Only the bosses presented a challenge, and that's mostly because the weird 2.5D didn't translate well and made the controls shitty for those fights.

It was a nice 5 hour romp though. The challenge you unlock after 100%ing it is actually pretty tough.

PS1 is a bit of a special case when it comes to games being "unknown".
Even the games that sold poorly were still in the range of hundreds of thousands of copies. Shit like Gex ended up selling ten million copies over the course of the series on PS1 and people still think it's a failure and barely anyone remembers it.

>> No.7403149

>>7401397
Anon, each crash game sold over very well on the ps1. I could easily find a cib Crash Bandicoot game for any of the five games on the system for peanuts.

Klonoa didn’t sell amazingly and as a result finding an ntsc copy cib is hard. It’s an ok game, if I wanted to shill a PS1 game as a hidden gem I’d go Tomba but it’s still good. Idk if it’s 250 good, but it’s good.

Tomba is not only the superior platformer is terms of level design and movement, but it is also a great adventure game overflowing with soul.
Klonoa is just a forgettable experience. I think it is more popular just because of the furry character design.

It was always "niche" though. Like as far as I'm aware none of the games were bestsellers, the Wiimake was to test the waters for a remake of 2 and 3, surprise surprise, guess what we never got?

This legit fucked me up first time I saw it. I came super close just to skipping it because I figured it would be a generic "wow we saved the world and we're going to be friends forever" ending but when it happened I just stared in disbelief, internally screaming for her to stop singing. I didn't cry or anything, I just couldn't believe it.

Also Klonoa looks like dogshit. Prerendered 2D sprites with 3D backgrounds is an awful aesthetic.

I didn't play it at all when I was a kid. It would be better if it were harder--almost every game would--but it's a masterpiece as is. And Tomba isn't even half as good as Klonoa
