Actually it was part of Nintendo of America's drive to market the NES as more than just a children's toy. Due to the video game crash they wanted to market it in the US as an 'entertainment system' (hence 'NES') rather than just a games console, so rather than just inserting the cartridge from the top, you put it in a slot and pushed the cart down. similar to VCR systems of the era and also they wanted the cartridges to be different and more substantial than the small Atari-type cartridges of the past. Inside of course, the PCBs are just the same size as those used in the smaller Famicom carts.
