If it wasn't as rushed and janky it would've been fine. The general gameplay concepts are ok, though not as original or fun as the classic games. The tone, plot, music and overall style was a perfect step forward for the series, even if the cutscenes were pretty laughably executed. Oh, and the Chao garden was a genius idea for giving the game replayability, even if it didn't really need to be as complicated as it was.
The real autist game is Adventure 2.

The game legit has the worst camera of any 3d game ever and you clip through everything, most of the times dying doesn't feel like it was your input but the game glitching unexpectedly and doing whatever it wants unpredictably. It does have cool music and the level design looks cool but it still plays horribly. The cutscenes are so bad they aren't even kind of charming in a nostalgic way, just agravating

Sure, I personally still don't consider it exactly "good" overall, but I was pointing out that it did have some strong points to it that people with lower standards or attachment to the franchise might get enjoyment out of and manage to overlook the major flaws. The stages all needed like an extra year of playtesting and bug fixing to even be made playable. It feels like they designed the levels and then rushed the mechanics, even Sonic's momentum and acceleration is akward and all fucked up, you'd think that is the first thing Sega would want polished in its flagship title but even in SA 2 they didn't fix shit

Most people at the time didn't give a shit if you had to play as characters other than sonic except for diehard classicfags. I actually don't mind playing as other characters at all but the mech/emerald hunt stages in SA2 are so boring and make up a huge chunk of the game while in SA1 only two game modes were truly terrible (one of which can be beaten in under an hour). I liked that they were separate campaigns because it meant they wold have their own pace and it wouldn't feel as interrupted. Also, I liked the hubworlds, they were comfy and usually had great music.

As far as the story goes, I really liked the way they handled it in SA1 with the story being divided into different character perspectives and overlapping with events happening in the background. It's cool as fuck and if you found it hard to follow you might be stupid.
