Was the level design good?

I want to say that Sonic CD is filled with great ideas, but I can't understand the layouts. You're often punished for going fast, but going fast is necessary in order to access the past/future areas. Are you simply intended to find those few areas where you have enough room to run until reaching the other time zones?

>> No.739356

The soundtracks were both awesome. Though I have to say I like the US one over JP.

You "understand" the layouts, there's nothing to get. Sonic CD was pretty bad compared to the other 2D games.

Pretty much.

I like Sonic CD's "janky" level design for the most part, it feels unique and promotes a different way of figuring things out. It matches the art style well. That said, I feel like the ultimate Sonic game would feature the level design and gameplay of Sonic 3K, the art style of Sonic CD, and music somewhere between the two.

>> No.739369

It's not that hard to get fast for awhile. It's my personal favorite of the Sonic games, too.

Sub par level design, sub par music. It all feels so unoriginal and the stages rehashed from the first game
Future/Past is interesting but doesn't really work to it's full potential. The only reason it was hyped up for so many years was that it was relatively obscure and treated like some holy grail. Now that it is widely available to rom download or buy for your phone people can see that it aint all that special compared to the other original Sonics.
Also OP, why/how are you playing Tails?

To be honest the level design was quite strange and just all over the place, especially the wacky workbench area, and I honestly felt they should have don more with the level when switching time periods as well.

It's a stock pic, not mine. The games got ported to modern consoles and I believe mobile OSes a couple years ago, all by one guy Christian Whitehead. He added new features like Tails, changing soundtracks, etc. it's pretty neat

Yeah, that's what I think it is. I'm a fan of Sonic CD because it's so much of exploration over going right and jumping. I admit that it's annoying sometimes to get to the past, but that's the point; The goal is to get to the past, so they purposely made it the most difficult time jump to pull off. You'll notice this because past gates are often in hard-to-fast zones, and the opposite is true of future gates.

It's a lot like Sonic 2 GG, where you have to literally roam around everywhere and do a lot of trial and error before you can find every emerald and get the best ending.

>> No.739409

>>739373
This. The levels were designed to facilitate the exploration and discovery of lengths long enough to do time travel. Don't want to do it? Ok, but you're probably going to anyways so just have fun getting to the goal in whatever time period you end up at.

Kind of a bad idea to encourage exploration in a series based on momentum based platformer since the two completely negate each other

Sonic CD was my favorite. I don't think it's bad. It's just really odd compared to the other ones. It gives me the same feeling Rondo of Blood did: sort of out of place in the series but favorable.

Though it's not my favorite I think it's a pretty enjoyable Sanic. The music is rad not matter what region you live in, and although the level design can get a little out there, it's not bad for the most part. Metal Sonic aside, some of the bosses were a little bland (Quartz Quadrant for the most part).

So what exactly was the point of Future poles if the objectives were all in the past? There's literally no point to go to the future unless you want to see if you changed it or not.

Also, what was the point of the figure eight run? It's cool, sure. But the spin dash makes you go just as fast and actually kills the enemies you run into. It makes the figure eight run useless.

The level design is ass. All the layouts and even some of the graphics look unfinished.

That said, it offers decent challenge and play experience for a classic Sonic game. It's just not nearly as impressive as S2 or S3K. And both soundtracks kick ass.

The Figure Eight is faster. Sure it doesn't make Sonic go Super Sanic, but it is faster. If you want to be able to kill your enemies in the process, all you need is to press Down when you're on solid ground.

Future was both a sweet experience when you got the good future in act 3, and pain in the ass and a challenge for getting that good future in the first place (through all the gates).

It's the difficulty of the game. If it were all past gates the game would be too easy.

Fucking this. I vehemently hated Sonic CD when I was kid since the level layouts were so confusing. Then I started playing it seriously a few years ago and learned the level layouts: where the Past signs were, the best places to time travel, etc. The game is an absolute blast once you know what you're doing. It's definitely one of my favorite Sonic games now too.

Sonic CD is easily my favorite Sonic game.

Both of the soundtracks are amazing, the time travel mechanic is lots of fun and lets you get good ending without doing the shitty special stages, the levels themselves look gorgeous, and most of all, I love the level design. Most people bitch because Sonic CD makes you slow down and learn the levels before you're able to go fast, but that's why I like it. Even as I kid I could blow through all the other Sonic games with ease, but Sonic CD makes you slow down, play the game a few times to learn where everything is, and THEN you can go fast.

Sonic 2 has more annoying level design in my opinion, and Sonic 3 and Knuckles is filled with too many shitty stages. People complain about Wacky Workbench but it really isn't that bad if you learn how to play it properly.

>Are you simply intended to find those few areas where you have enough room to run until reaching the other time zones?
That's exactly it. The levels are designed to give the player the option of either speeding through the levels or taking the time to explore everything and find all the hidden goodies.

>>739790
Are you seriously that dirt poor that you need to pirate a $5 game? How about we financially support this shit so more ports like it can be made.

Sonic CD is great.

Things you do in the Past will affect the level layout in Present and Future.

90% of peoples' problems were related to not understanding that.
