They gave Lunar on PS a shit review because it was a 1992 game repackaged in 1999 for $59.99. It wasn't even the lunar collection, it was just the first game sold at the same price as FF8 or xenogears.

Final fantasy anthology was also released in 1999 which ported FFV and FFVI to playstation, and this was the first appearance of V in the west. That offered far better value so it got a better score than lunar.

Sandy Petersen (Creator of the Call of Cthulu tabletop RPG and one of the developers of Doom, Doom 2 and Quake) did video game reviews for Dungeon Magazine. Here is his review of Ken's Labyrinth - he is pretty harsh despite it being made by a 17 year old kid and his brother - that 17 year old kid was Ken Silverman, who went on to develop the Build Engine used for games like Duke Nukem 3D, Blood and Shadow Warrior, and this was his first game. The average game, or anything, is trash. Again, the 80/20 principle - 80% of worth is concentrated in the top 20% of a population. This bears out naturalistically, and it certainly bears out in gaming. A 7/10 game... I mean is there any difference between a 1/10 and a 4/10, in terms of how worthwhile it is to play? I mean, I know that the guy didn't play any more of the game than he needed to in order to pump out a half page of review content, but it's a special talent to come across as a lazy try-hard.

>I wasn't around during the 90s
2D games were outdated grandpa shit. Everybody wanted the future, 3D games were the future. The N64 and Playstation had finally gotten 3D graphics to the point where they could be used to make experiences that were literally fucking impossible in the years prior. Who the fuck wants a 2D platformer when Zelda just revolutionized 3D game design? Any effort spent on 2D games was considered anti-progressive low budget nonsense that was holding video games back.

>"Time stopped for the designers in 1990."
>"I laughed a lot, not because the game is particularly humorous, but because of how shoddily made it is."
>There's really nothing to write about such a bad game. Nothing on the ZX Spectrum, Atari XE and Atari ST (may they rest in peace) competes in that regard. It's the worst game I have ever played."
>"The studio had no idea what they wanted to achieve with this game. I guess it's a poor man's strategy game / RPG, or an economic game. (...) It plays like a really boring football manager game, actually. Lots of tedious and unproductive clicking on icons."
>"I don't care to talk more about this terrible game, so I'm just going to quickly mention the audiovisual side of it. The graphics are terrible. Everything relies on a bunch of static images! Something like that in the year 2000..."
>"The music and sounds are also terrible. Why would I want to listen to something reminiscent of the old Commodore?"
>"This is the first time I'm giving something a 1/10. It's sad that we have to suffer crap games like this in the current year."

Let's see

SMW:
>you can fly
>you can control yoshi as the beast master
>you can shoot fire as a master of the elements
>memorable music, back to back bangers which have become culturally iconic and important to human history
>iconic art style, extremely pleasing to the eye
>very snappy, responsive, and satisfying controls
>very few shitty levels, gradual increase in difficulty feels organic and natural
>very memorable enemies, everyone can name 3 to 5 off the bat
>normalfags can hum a song from the game
>goal of the game is to defeat the evil fire breathing turtle dragon's vast army, who have taken over the kingdom, and rescue the princess and her people from ruin.
>you can team up with your brother luigi for this quest and have an awesome 2player adventure, strengthening familial/friend bonds
>back in the day if you busted out smw in front of a girl and played it with her you were going to have sex

SMW 2: YOSHI'S ISLAND
>mario shits his diaper immediately, he is a baby wearing a diaper, right off the bat the game throws this bullshit at you
>game establishes you as a slave to a shitty diapered baby who is crying nonstop
>baby powerup has him turn into a baby who can walk, he cant fly he can only float
>yoshi turns into a shitty helicopter machine and a dildo shaped submarine for no reason
>baby mario crying nonstop has been linked to giving players migraines and tinnitus
>goal of the game is to get mario a fresh diaper
>very linear design, no real secret exits or paths
>controls are a slippery mess
>has a literal fart sounding soundtrack, yoshis nonstop talkin sounds like farts and shits, baby diaper visual also supplements this theme and drives the creator's obvious scat fetish home
>if you busted out smw2 in front of a girl she'd call you a pedophile and you'd be on a list right now
>yoshi gets high like a degen
>no memorable music
>no multiplayer
>awful chalky artstyle made for babies that did not age well

no-brainer why it is deservedly shit on
