The last one who offered to help with retranslations was hounded by a bunch of rabid "working designs fans", organizing on gainjinworks forums, resetera, and hardcoregaming101, to "convince" the romhacker to drop his fix romhacks for the ludicrous grinding and other anti-QoL changes by WD, and try and get them removed off anywhere online where he documented the changes. When they heard he had a blog with the content reuploaded they "politely requested" he deletes those as well and finish their job for them.

Those romhacks weren't even retranslations but fixes to restore the GAMEPLAY of the jp version, with a message he has the tools needed to help with a retranslation should a competent translator help. Even that INTENT was too much for those romhacks to be approved on RHDN or allowed to exist, according to resetera.

There are a few jokes that made me groan in the WD translation. But for 1994 release, it was one of the better English localization. The voice actors were good enough. Good English localization were few and far between. Snatcher is another one, on the Sega CD that I would put in the good category.

I'm not huge on the MCD version actually. It has big sprites and a lot of momentum in combat like she's fighting on ice. Rather than ports each version is radically different and built up.

Sega of America was more interested in publishing FMV games than localize JRPG's. The Mega CD/ Sega CD really did not have a lot of original RPG's. Ports of PC88/PC98 games, PCE-CDROM games, Famicom games, and games like Shining Force CD are enhanced ports of GameGear games. The system has quite a few anime/ manga licensed games as well. I guess Lunar 1 and 2, are some of the better original RPG's for the system. I always wanted to play that ShadowRun digital novel game.

Even now resetera is still making threads monitoring the situation with the uncensor patches for Yakuza games and whether any of them restore the censored text (all mentions of "rape" or "toxic masculinity" cut out) or the cut side quests (hostesses and an actual evil tranny sidequest in Y3)

The fine folks doing it haven't restored those aspects yet, but it's mainly because of technical limitations with the remasters and their existing tools (they restored Judgement before), but it's worrying they got resetera's attention.

If you want a quick laugh - someone there posted some of the many "problematic lines" in Working Designs games, and THEN Supper's work became fine and coveted, and his blog was linked despite them a few years earlier trying to get it offline. Between that and their repeated raids against RHDN translators and even translation projects outside RHDN's influence (the Great Ace Attorney project, which they wanted "localized" under the "control" of an editor from NeoGAF (proto-resetera) ) they're a net negative for gaming.

Moral of the story? Supper stopped, but someone else fluent in Japanese who shares the distaste for WD trash should step up and do Popful Mail or Silhouette Mirage justice. Maybe Alundra, Rayearth, and Lunar for good measure.
"Someone else will do it if there's enough interest" doesn't really work, there's harassment involved and there's trying to get the romhack pulled off RHDN over technicalities (this pixel perfect reproduction of a PS1 font is infringing on the copyright of Game Arts, this translation that replaces Ted Woosley's script uses some sentences from a copyrighted GBA game) that NEVER get invoked anywhere else, would invalidate 90% of the submitted romhacks, and are dubious legal opinions. Why is dark wizard always left out? I found it superior to shining force CD in almost every possible way. Shining CD was stripped down bare bones game gear port and I felt cheated when I first rented it back when it was new. It was vastly inferior to SF1 or 2 and brought nothing new or memorable. They stripped out the towns and most of the RPG elements of the game due to gamegear limitations, and then just dumped it onto a CD as a recycled cash grab. I have gone back to replay SF1 & 2 several times since their release, but I have not touched CD version since the day I returned it to the rental store as it had zero replay value.

Dark wizard was like a hybrid of shining force meets "master of monsters", and your hero units were joined with monster units that all grew and evolved. There were also four different campaigns that gave unique play throughs from each other and offered a huge difference in difficulty.

The anime cutscenes were nice and CD orchestra music made it feel like an actual sega CD game.

If you do play it, read the hero section on gamefaqs first because who you pick and how you play them could really affect the pacing and enjoyment of the game, but there is nothing in-game saying which is the "beginner route". Very little is explained in game, and most things you learn through trial and error in multiple playthroughs.

Some things are not intuitive, like a Greater lich is more of a high defense tank unit who paralyzes enemies, rather than a spellcasting skeleton mage. Some units that you expect to be awesome are not, and others will pleasantly surprise you how good they are.

Or go in blind and still have fun, but I know on one of my early playthroughs I picked a hero who really didn't work with my play style and I couldn't get the cooler units I wanted.

They actually tried to accuse the romhacker of being a nazi over the manjis still in the game (a game notoriously hard to hack, by the by.) and they knew the Goemon series as a whole are "problematic", so much even those rare few extra-censored official Goemon localizations couldn't completely hide it.

The point: while you're all sitting on your asses just lamenting this situation or saying "learn Japanese" even to the rare few /vr/ autists who try to do translation projects here, they're compiling lists of romhack authors with wrong opinions and preparing their replacements with their own to enforce their standards. There's already some attempts to pozz The Great Ace Attorney or Sakura Taisen, and that Lunar Magical School project is already compromised. The romhacking scene did some decent pushback against resetera daring to try and harass someone out of his hobby with the complicity of gatekeepers like HG101 and RHDN.net, but much more needs to be done.

Contextually, at the time, WD games were some of the better English localisations. But this was also from a time when voice acting was still uncommon in games (regulated to CD-ROM) and most Japanese to English translations were done by the Japanese studios poorly. So, different standards.

That isn't what happens most of the time. Normal people (even those otherwise "SJW" or anti-Trump by pol standards) are indifferent, or mock it in a non-controversy setting. Content creators who go out of their way to cater to ResetEra (organizing AMAs there, for example) are reviled.

What DOES happen is that ResetEra honed gamedev harassment tactics to a science, and used it to great effect to pressure some developers and game localizers to "kiss the ring" in various ways. For that, they give invites to localizers and game journalists, and they help both on the inside and outside steer the controversy in the direction resetera wants no matter how adverse to the company's finances. Of course a company can be willing to stand their ground (Ion Fury) so they'll try and get more well-timed articles from Kotaku, Polygon, RPS, Siliconera, etc. and even try and involve MSM. But that negative word of mouth is limited to that. ResetEra members also control r/games on reddit (this is known because they bragged about it) and very often, any time a given controversy blows up, it's usually brainstormed on their pedo discords then on the forums then immediately a blitz of articles, reddit threads, and some twitter threads that can be traced back to them appear at the same time.

The treatment of fan project authors isn't much different.
The chokehold will be the mod aggregator websites (already infiltrated by some sympathetic mods), a tiny subset of romhackers (all members of resetera and hg101 boards curiously) who will threaten to pull everything from the website if the full list of demands that appeared FIRST on resetera isn't satisfied to the letter (kissing the ring, purging the work, purging the offenders AND their supporters, entrenching resetera agents), otherwise then Kotaku will run an article about the aggregators and "ask Nintendo for comment".
Resetera tries to give invites to known romhackers failed, they're still outsiders.

There were other aggregator websites that did everything that RHDN does, but they were abandoned. Even beyond worrying about resetera's gay ops, RHDN is unreliable as a hosting service. Newer system romhacks aren't hosted there, bigger romhacks use external hosting and many are already dead links, many of the existing stuff is worthless (very unfinished, patch needs to be converted to a sane usable format), undubs and uncensor patches aren't uploaded there, anonymous romhacks aren't, specific games get rejected for arbitrary reasons (anyone outraged at Piko last week will love to hear the list of translations that get pulled at the request of bootleggers who don't even OWN THE IP) and all the while you're lulled into a sense of false security that there's a website somewhere that does this shit.

The Turbo Graphix-16 was basically dead in the North American market by the time 1994 rolled around. Retailers basically stopped stocking the machine in 1993. One of the reasons why Snatcher was ported to the Sega CD, because there was no way to sell the TG16 CD-ROM version in the west. So, the Sega CD version was made for western audiences only, as this version was never released in Japan. Lords of Thunder for the Sega/ Mega CD is the same. It was only released in EU and NA. Because there was already a PCE-CDROM version available in Japan.
