I think the dos version has the best graphics if you integer scale it but the fanmade UQM version has the best audio + it has remixes. I'm kinda torn up on which to play. In dosbox I've configured my sample rate to near 50,000 and it still sounds like ass compared to the 3DO or UGM version

Ehhh I dunno. I guess I'm gonna go with the vanilla version of UQM since it has the most options. I'll probably also still play the DOS version simultaneously now the I know how to backup it's save files. I wonder are save files compatible between DOS and UQM? Or is it not possible since UQM was built off of the 3DO conversion?

You shouldn't "integer" scale 320x200 Does games since mode X pixels aren't square. Use a proper dosbox fork with pixel perfect mapping if you have to waste your time with the inferior Dos version.

It is my favorite DOS game. I prefer the original DOS version for the amazing music, and rather not have voices interrupting it. While both the 3DO version and the DOS version has good hyperspace songs, I lean towards the DOS one. The nice thing is The Ur-Quan Masters is configurable to cater for preferences.

That's why I even like Solar Winds. It was a cheaper alternative, and scratched the itch. Not as good, but it was more of what I liked.

Do the other versions have clearer sound? Maybe it's dosbox being unable to 100% emulate soundblaster for this game or something, or maybe the original dos versions just have compressed sound files? Because the UQM and 3DO versions have the same songs but in much higher quality

But I was EXACTLY the same as you, I played it and was utterly surprised how such a good game went under my radar

I always read dungeon crawling threads and how everyone makes their Phantasy Star and Wizardry maps by hand and thought that was never for me but then I had pages of scribbles of random coordinates and lore notes and interesting planet locations etc for this. I'm pretty jealous you're having your first playthrough, SC2/UQM is the number 1 retro game I've discovered and played since this board started
