Legend of Mana. He's actually animated using a FMV texture in the game, looks fucking awesome.

It's a shame they dumped all that artistry into such an unengaging game.

Interesting. Lol I have a few friends who rave about this game, but they didn't play Seiken Densetsu 2 or 3.

Fuck, that's brilliant.
I wonder why Legend and Children weren't on Collection of Mana? Does Square see anything past Seiken Densetsu 3 as a red-haired step child?

Most are. Legend of Mana is the single decent entry in the series past 3. DoM is a fucking disaster.

It's a DS game right? I actually didn't play that one but I vaguely remember it. I wonder if DS games are funny in any way that makes them hard to port. So Children was good game? Square might see it as just a spinoff, but if it's the last good original game in the series...

That is legitimately the best retro 3d tree I've seen. All other ones have billboards for leaves and look terrible. Pic related is one of the better examples, but even as pixelated as it is I cannot unsee the billboards.

>>7372734
Yeah, I played it daily during breaks when I was in college, I thought Children was a pretty good follow up to the previous SNES and GB games.

Well, it was a cutscene prop, you can cheat a lot in those.

The Moon tree in Majora's Mask always reminded me of the Vagrant Story one for some reason

Every game uses billboards except super early 3d ones that just make the leaves blocks like it's minecraft. Man I am so autistic. I feel like I can see every individual billboard on the one you posted except the ones close to the center of the picture.

Legend is relatively unique (only thing that comes close is SaGa) due to its non-linear gameplay. Rather than following a clear plotline from beginning to end, the game consists of many separate quests that you do in a non-linear order. Back when it came out people hated it as they wanted a more standard RPG, but it has since become a cult hit precisely because of its unusual structure.

Unfortunately, Square seems to entirely ignore Legend nowadays.

>> No.7372849

>>7372805
It's unique, which is somewhat of a merit, but it's a bit frustrating to really enjoy, specially on the first run which is pretty confusing.

I think there's a general lack of forward drive. You obviously run into storylines that interest you more than others, but because of the modular approach of the game, once you clear a "vignette" you have little control (or understanding) as to when whatever storyline it focused on will be picked up again.

Is there a NewGame+ feature, by the way? I think I got to an ending once but I don't remember if you gotta start from scratch if you want to try different things with the map

>> No.7372869

>>7372849
Yeah there's new game+ and additional difficulty modes. It's designed to be played multiple times and forging the most powerful weapons requires building up certain rare items over subsequent playthroughs. Unfortunately the highest difficulty mode is bugged and not actually very difficult. I spent a lot if time making a weapon to tackle it and the weapon wasn't even maxed but killed every enemy up to and including the end boss in 1-2 hits.

I love the storytelling and the way the game is broken up into vignettes, it's just a shame the combat is never very interesting.

I remember those cutscenes. That period in the late 90s and early 2000s in which EVERY game has to feature a protagonist with repressed memories got a bit annoying

It's extremely common in anime to. Now western horror games are the ones overusing it.
