Those are pretty unappealing even if you don't consider the basic requirement of contrast which is a must in actually usable pixel art.

The Mario and MM ones might work in that sense, but the Link and Belmont wouldn't at all unless the background was a neutral color void like the artist has conveniently chosen to present them in.

>It works like this: in an SNES game, any one tile/sprite in the can only use 16 different colors at a time (thus the term 16-bit). Normal Link and bunny Link use the same set of colors (palette), which does not include a yellow-brown for Link's hair. This is because, with the pink for the bunny included, there isn't enough room in the palette for that extra color.

It would be weird if it really was a design decision derived from limitations:
Why was it mandatory for both versions of Link to be the same "entity"? Plenty of games switch spritesets for character switching, and the bunny character is pretty simple (just walking animations)
And even if it NEEDED to be the same spriteset for some reason: aren't the colored tunics handled through palette changes in the game? Why not use the same method to swap between regular/bunny palettes? I'm pretty sure the SNES could do that shit on the fly.

I never liked Mario's weird pompadour in SMW, he looks like a racist italian caricature. Also the red and blue hues of the clothing were off.

MegaMan looks great and infinitely superior to the original sprite, though it was a bit too big to a point the screen looked too crowded most of the time. The MMX proportions are more appropriate for a MegaMan game

Link looks a bit dorky, but so did the original so whatever.

Everything in Super Metroid looks awesome in comparison to the original.

Whatshisface Belmont in SCIV always felt awkward to me. The animation is weird and the rendering looks it would fit in an Amiga shovelware game

disagree. Megaman's new sprite has too much emotion, making it look like just X 2.0. The original expression is fitting because its more robotic.

That's unintentional though. He's supposed to be basically an Astroboy "homage" (ie ripoff), a character that was extremely expressive and Disney-esque.

It's just the team wasn't exactly Capcom's A-team, all pretty young people including Inafune, who did most of the art himself (he was never a crack artist even after years at Capcom)

ive notice this confusion with many non Americans, but just because a design isnt done an insulting manner and is flattering, doesnt mean it isnt a racist caricature. Some of my favorite characters are nothing but an American stereotype
