I remember the amount of manufactured hype surrounding the N-Gage, then when it came out Nokia faked the amount of sales. I only knew one person in my high school that had the N-Gage QD. I mean it was cooler than my siemens a56 prepaid cell but I had a ton of GBA games and the DS was coming out.

The only real complaint about the system is the screen size, which is an unfortunate problem to have. I really wanted to like this thing, but you can't just improve your game selection or mod a battery or something, the screen size will always be unbearable. The display's vertical height is the same height as a GBA's, and less than 60% of its width. The hardware could have performed like a mythical 10th gen super-console and still would have failed with a screen like that.

I know it may not be the /vr/ rules but my own personal rules for what is retro goes by the product death. PS2 in my opinion isn't retro because people were still playing it and still using it as their main console in 2010. Games were still being released in 2013. Retro should be an amount of time, maybe 15 years, since the product has been relevant.

>> No.7366835

>>7366779
Theres a lot of good games on ngage plus symbian and java games, its pretty loaded. Sonic n is just one bad example. Theres a few crap games like call of duty but most of the 3d games ran fine to a bit choppy. tony hawk and tomb raider being the spectacles, of course. Then theres games like urban asphalt and ashen that are underrated 3d games on the n gage. Splinter cell, red faction, one, shadow key, ssx, tiger woods.

>> No.7367018

N-Gage had potential but man, I never understand why companies releases a capable hardware but then make shitty choices like that screen aspect ratio or having to remove the battery in order to insert another game, it's like all they care is that the thing is powerful enough then spin the wheel to see what retarded idea they use so it doesn't look too similar to another handheld in the market

>> No.7367032

>then make shitty choices like that screen aspect ratio
The reason is because its just their old phone with a taco shell slapped on it.

Pretty sure It was possible to download content onto a memory card to work around removing the battery.

I think that's actually worse because they didn't make a full effort to get into the market, they saw handheld consoles were popular and thought hey let's try to milk the industry too surely it will work with barely any effort

Then they wonder why they failed and this doesn't only apply to the N-Gage but many of the Atari consoles or the consoles that came around the PS1/N64/Saturn era

Atari's only half assed console was the 5200. 7800 was a genuinely great console that got released 3 years late due to management change, the lynx is probably the most groundbreaking handheld console ever made, the cancelled panther console was going to deliver the neo geo experience with some 3D capabilities added for a fraction of the price, and the jaguar was a console with great potential hindered by rushed development and launch. Atari made more innovations than nintendo and sega wish they could pull off.

>Lynx was ridiculously huge and sucked.
Lynx also had better sprite transformation capabilities and 3D processing than the SNES. The only flaw is they attached a lightbulb behind the LCD screen instead of making it reflective, sucking up around 80% of its power. Honestly it wouldnt be bad if it was a small home console like the PC Engine, the form factor would be attractive.

No, thats not it at all. They were trying to bridge the gap. They wanted an all in one system. Phone, pda, games, mp3, Bluetooth, internet, etc... It even has a real one player for videos. The n gage was more powerful than any other handheld at the time, sure they kind fucked up with the screen, but what really screwed the n gage was being labeled "the taco phone". Even the QD model couldn't help by the time people thoughts it was a gimmick. I actually use an ngage as my cell phone right now, it works great.

retarded, if a multiplat came out on gamecube xbox and ps2 would it be against the rules in your opinion to discuss the ps2 version? i sort of get the mindset of what youre talking about, but it just isnt going to end up with consistent logic.

so the n64 is retro and the gamecube is retro the ps2 isnt?

Yes. That is correct. Retro is a style and that style is the design of the product. If that product lives into 2010 it isn't considered retro imo. I don't care what the game looks like because anyone can create pixel art games, but when I think of PS2 I don't think retro because I hav seen a PS2 in someones bedroom in 2010+. The nostalgia factor isn't there.

stop making up autistic rules to bend the concept of retro games into your small idea of what is right. you are just being the kid on the playground who annoys others by retroactively making exceptions to things.

if two consoles were made in the same year, they should be viewed through the same lens. a console succeeding or failing and having extra or less years of use doesn't change when it was built. the fact that the ps2 had so many years of use is an anomaly. and most of the later games were just ports anyway. are you going to say that the earliest ps2 games arent retro, because the console itself in your autistic view isnt retro because of (imaginary reasons)?

you can argue that in some countries, some consoles are used for an extra 5 or 10 years because they are third world, does that mean because some group somewhere used a console for an extra few years, that suddenly it isnt retro? maybe in that perspective we should change all of the definitions of retro because maybe in africa they are still using the playstation 1.

>People believe the goatse shit
Nokia designed a bunch of other phones with similar setups, plus it makes it easier to dial while side talking. The QD is better in every way. It's actually kind of a shame, the N-Gage had potentially and was as powerful as a GBA but was crippled by that first bad model. If the QD were the original it would have done better.

Looking back now, it seems so obvious that the whole phone should be a touch screen.

Yes, you had to remove the battery to get access to the the cartridge slot. It was really cumbersome and at some point I just said fuck it and started installing pirated games on the internal memory
