I love it. It's unorthodox, but nobody has a right to bitch about that now after BotW, aka TES: Hyrule.
And there's a randomizer and other challenges to up the ante for you when you peak out on the normal game.
If you laid 16-bit visuals on the game and changed nothing else, it could easily pass as a solid SNES/Gen game.

i like dragon quest as much as the next guy, but i don’t understand how anyone can think this if they’ve played a good amount of both DQ and FF— FF is clearly the more interesting, creative, and innovative series. The music is better, the gameplay is fresh in every entry, hell, the “plots” are even more interesting. like i said, i like every DQ game i’ve played, but FF does literally everything better and feels much less... bland.

Except it isn't anything like a Castlevania game except side-scroller, and that's only in action sequences. No Castlevania game has a world map to explore or persistent world events in a non-linear sequence (well Simon's Quest is non-linear); the fact you imply Zelda 2 is a bad Castlevania game implies you don't know jack shit of what you're talking about so your opinions are irrelevant.

River City Ransom is damn near unplayable on NES due to all the lag and flicker, which is even worse in 2p.

If you were serious you'd be playing it on X68K instead, but just saying the names RCR and NES gives you hipster cred apparently, can't beat that.
