Die Hard, Big Trouble in Little China, not pure action and more drama heavy but movies about Vietnam are typically good(Apocalypse Now, Full Metal Jacket, Platoon), The Fugitive(more thriller), RoboCop, Mad Max, Lethal Weapon. So I been looking into this for you. Pie in the Sky was name of the company, the actual engine was called Power 3D. They also had a program to make games with called the 3D Game Creation System. That is what people used to make stuff like Lethal Tender.

Pie in the Sky's official site has been dead since sometime after 2015.

I already made the monster pack. I already replaced almost everything. Things like revenant/archvile/cyberdemon don't need replacements. It replaces existing monsters, so that you can easily see them in the editor and so you can easily playtest them, as opposed to creating a new monster in a new unused thing slot and having to make a new map to test it.

The monster balance is in between normal monsters and fast monsters, as imps/hellknight projectiles travel faster, enemies are generally faster, some have added refire checks, etc., but it's still not fast monsters. The cyberbaron will push your shit in, though, since most barons are placed in tight spaces.

It's moody like Quake, but the level design is more intricate and rife with details. The shotgun is loud, banging, more like Doom II's super shotgun than Quake's double barrel. Doom can do that because it has the BFG and the SSG. The SSG can kill multiple demons at once, and the BFG speaks for itself. Not to mention the lower system requirements to have that many monsters on screen at once.

Unforgiven mod has 464 monsters on its final map. Warpspasm has 522 monsters on its second map, but Warpspasm's encounters aren't grandiose for the aforementioned reasons. Unforgiven kind of gets there actually. Probably the closest to Doom slaughter maps, and that final map has a lot of grandiosity to it. Really swell Quake episode, but the longest I ever took on a Quake map was Arcane Dimensions' Foggy Bogbottom at 90 minutes, but that's because I was searching for the secret tomes. Quake doesn't play like Doom, and vice versa. Can't go expecting that same epicness.

Is this on the Quake engine? So far it's interesting at least but the sound effects are fucking horrible, it sounds like I have the volume all the way down when I fire a gun or kill an enemy, and the level design feels incredibly unfinished, for example I got to the exit of the first level thinking the button was just for a lift or something, felt like I was only halfway through the map.
Also it's super easy so far, I'm incredibly drunk but am going through on hard with barely any resistance. I really hope these guys take a LOT more time to finish this. It could end up being a fairly unique mod with this post-apocalypse communist Poland setting that I like, but it's so rough it just ends up being frustrating seeing all the potential they're missing out on.

The standards for art and execution get a pass when you make a standalone game I guess. If Dusk was a quake mod it would have been 3/5 or something on quaddicted and likely torn apart for it's weak textures and models.

I think it depends. It might not sit as well with the super low poly-ness of it than it might have if they bumped it up juuuust a tad. Maybe gotten some more style into it.
Like the deer in Evil Dead 2. It's stupid, but it fits stylistically visually and with the sadisticness of the deadites.
Maybe someone will nail it in the future, but Dusk was a fair attempt in some ways. I feel like a lot of people fail at that theme.

That's mostly in the voicelines and characters, a few in-level jokes are scattered about. Then there's Hexen, Quake 1 and 2, Half Life, Unreal, Blood, etc. tons of good shooters I wouldn't find consider "silly and cute" unless I was being facetious.
Dusk has great themes, I just think the artstyle of the models make them look like adorable huggable plushies.

It's mostly that I don't feel like I'm shooting huggable plushies when I play those other shooters, which is funny because enemies like the ones in Blood are literal dolls. Due to that, Dusk was hard to take as seriously as I'd prefer.

I haven't played Dusk or any of those "boomer shooters", but a lot I think look kind of meh. I like Doom a lot because aside from its rock solid core gameplay, good level design, and hugely versatile bestiary, along with its supreme capacity for being modded, it has a lot of styles and aesthetics to it that I love, and which most of the fan works stick to in one way or another:
>Heavy metal album cover monsters and designs
>Medieval gothic fantasy stuff with a lot of the stereotypical satanic and demonic imagery, lots of gargoyles, and lots of that weird pale green marble, either as just bricks, or as elaborate wall reliefs and pillars, providing detailed trims to rooms and hallways
>Horror movie monsters and lots of detailed (not necessarily realistic) gore, demons which are also cybernetic organisms, cyborgs, surreal locations which in themselves are made out of living flesh
>Sci-fi action movie stuff, things which look futuristic and advanced, like the body armor, space bases, plasma guns, and massive computer arrays, but also a lot of used future stuff, a lot of stuff which looks like it would just be horribly obsolete for such an advanced setting, yet keeps getting used, because it works well enough (just because it's the future doesn't mean buckshot doesn't still put a man six feet under)
>Music based in heavy metal, rock, grunge, high tempo stuff made to get you pumped to fight monsters, and even heavy synthy stuff, along with tense and foreboding atmospheric themes to get you, well, tense

It's such a fantastically wonderful mix of sci-fi, horror, heavy metal, action movies, Dungeons & Dragons, and it varies from focusing more towards one at a time, or mixing them for all kinds of interesting and weird results. Games like Quake and Duke Nukem 3D are pretty different overall, but they do have a bit in common with this as well.
I also like that there's some sincerity with it all, Doom doesn't take itself way too seriously, but it sticks to the concept of hell invading and you being the hero who must fight to save mankind. DN3D has some more levity to it, and breaks the fourth wall a bit here and there, but it doesn't stray from that either, your goal is to save the world, and those Alien Bastards are your scummy enemies who must pay.
