Any games or consoles that live in your memory for the HYPE moreso than for the game/console itself? I was so fucking hyped for the N64. The build up, seeing the game boxes, the wonder of 3D Mario, those fleeting minutes playing Mario at demo kiosks, the weird futuristic look of the controllers... it was almost just too much for eight year old me. The thing was fucking magical. Loved the shit out of Mario, Wave Race, Pilot Wings, Shadows of the Empire, anything that took me to those magical worlds presented in a way that only the N64 could manage.

But now, I can't bring myself to play more than 5 minutes of Wave Race or Pilotwings. Mario 64 is still fun, no doubt, but it's just a fun 3D platformer that doesn't hold up as well as some of the prior entries in the series. OoT and MM are still fun, but I'd just as soon play Windwaker which I wasn't quite as hyped for. I know it is hard for anything to live up to hype, but I was hyped for Super Mario RPG and that is still as magical as ever.

This isn't a "shit on the N64" thread, just a place to discuss games where the prerelease information, anticipation, and overall vibe made a much greater impression on you than the game itself.

It's a party console and otherwise very experimental. Great thing, but it's too bad it's architecture is poorly implemented and thus hard to emulate accurately, most of the time.

The multiplayer was fun, but the single player has probably held up better.

I wish it had some more “hidden gems” like the PS1. I feel like the only games worth playing on the system are the ones everyone knows and talks about regularly.

Pokemon Diamond/Pearl and I guess Super Smash Bros. Brawl. The former I had been following since I first discovered Serebii in 2004 and all we knew about it was that it was for the DS, you could bring your GBA Pokemon, and it had a pre-evolution of Snorlax named Gonbe. It felt like forever waiting for actual screenshots of the game, though.

we were all so hyped for gold and silver that we ended up thinking marill was going to be some legendary in it, got nicknamed pikablu, it was the only image we had back then and rumors were rife

Also thought that Ampharos was Persian's evolved form.

>those Geocities and/or Angelfire pages telling you the REAL TOTALLY TRUE way to get Pikablu in Red and Blue
The lead up to G/S was insane for elementary/middle school me. Gold was the first game I imported, and that first encounter with Hoothoot or Sentret was nuts after having spent so long playing Red and obsessing over the series in general.

The Hype for the N64 was big, and the N64 had a solid launch. But it really lacked games with-in it's first year. Especially in North America. The N64 launched with Mario 64 and Pilotwings 64 in late September of 1996. Wave Race 64 was released in November 1st 1996. Mario 64 and Pilot Wings were the only two games for the console before Wave Race 64. Later on in November, Mortal Kombat Trilogy, Wayne Gretzky 3D Hockey and Killer Instinct Gold were released. In December 1996, there was Crusin' USA and Star Wars: Shadow of the Empire.

1996 N64 NA release looked like this:
> September 1996
Mario 64
Pilotwings 64
> November 1996
Wave Race 64
Mortal Kombat Trilogy
Wayne Gretzky 3D Hockey
Killer Instinct Gold
> December 1996
Crusin' USA
Star Wars: Shadow of the Empire.

Once the console was out, the real anticipation was waiting for games to get released for the system.

To add more:
> 1997 NA release schedule:
> Jan 1997:
NBA Hangtime
> February 1997:
Mario Kart 64
FIFA Soccer 64
> March 1997:
Turok: Dinosaur Hunter
Blast Corps
> April 1997
Doom 64
>May 1997
War Gods
Hexen
> June 1996:
Star Fox 64

Nintendo was releasing 1-2 N64 games a month (they would manufacture the third party carts too) for the N64. The real anticipation was waiting for any software to arrive.

You're a fucking idiot and that's all there is to discuss in this thread.

Pilotwings 64 and Wave Race 64 are incredibly replayable entries to this day and you should be ashamed of yourself for having such shitty taste in games and in what you can go back to, you're a disgrace to N64 fans.

Nothing. I remember seeing the mario 64 kiosk in the local toy store and being blown away by it. I'd just run around in front of Peach's castle and jump around. I only had played sega genesis and SNES by that point and it seemed revolutionary
