It's a perfectly fine action adventure. You can play the story through in a single sitting, there's a few things to unlock or find and maybe a boss or two that make it hold your interest.
It's not a survival horror game and it's not a good Resident evil game.

I was a big RE fan and played RE1/2/3 on the PSX and CV on the DC.
I got the GC just to play it, and was disappointed to find out it was even more of an action game than RE3.

It was a horror game in the same way that F.E.A.R. was a horror game and in the same way the movie Aliens was a horror movie.

It could be scary but it was about action first and foremost. It had a silly but fun b-list action movie plot too.

This is actually my favorite resident evil game, though I have yet to play the last to RE games to come out

The aiming is shit on purpose but you'll get used to it, also you should be abusing your knife and performing melee attacks whenever possible, they do a lot of damage and go a long way towards saving ammo.

Having such a severe sway to your aiming is actually a really fun way of making the aiming more tense and challenging, gitting gud at compensating for the sway is really satisfying and makes long distant shots with your pistol feel really rewarding once you can do it consistently.

cope, the series designer im re1 said in interviews he always wanted it be more action orientated. 4 may have gone slightly too far in a few ways, but it is nowhere near as bad as any of the other games that followed it. 4 is a good compromise between the atmospher of resident evil and the original vision of the creator.

>> No.7345881

>>7345862
adding to this. if you want to say that resident evil 5 isnt a resient evil game thats fine. it has a lot of the controls from resident evil 4 but completely loses the sense of atmosphere or isolation inherent to a re title.even small things like the item box in 4 that they changed from 5 really lost a lot of the charm of the game.

i dropped it half way through but have finished 4 10 times. its a good game. i played an hour of 6 and turned it off, couldnt stand it. and have yet to try 7. you can criticize the newer ones if you like but resident evil 4 is a very good middle ground that combines a lot of the best features from each end of the re spectum.

>> No.7345887

You'll unsuck if you play it more. Two tips:

Every action animation except attacking and opening doors makes you fully invincible for the duration so use them to avoid danger and make yourself untouchable even if surrounded
>kicking people, suplexing cultists? invincible
>climbing ladders, jumping down, climbing through windows? invincible
>literally put in a stun animation from your own explosion being somewhat close? invincible

Enemies start their long ass animations to swing at you well ahead of time to intercept your path while you're running... And they can't stop. If you so much as tap forward and the run button, unless they're in that mode where they're going to awkwardly wait a long time in your face to attack, you can make them start an attack, which won't hit you if you just back away, and then you can run straight by them while they're in the attack's recovery, pushing them if necessary. You barely have to fight these idiots, unless you want to, they're that inept.

something that has puzzled me for a long time is how capcom handles animations and vulnerability. they do some wonky weird shit. what comes to mind is lost planet for xb360. you could get stunlocked in the multiplayer when another player uses the mech robot shotgun on you. each time you get blasted you fly back and knocked on your ass, and your character takes a few seconds to get up stubling around. youre invincible during that animation, but players would just wait for you to get up and blast you again, before you had a chance to roll or move. chaining this until you died. in the end it was more annoying that you were invincible, because instead of a quick death you just get a slow annoying one where another player can fuck with you because of your I frames.

Failing that, you can shoot someone in the face to stagger them and then just run in and the kick will hit everyone, or you can use your grenades to great effect.

Kneecap them, then use special melee attack. You can also headshot them for the same effect, but that can be a harder target depending on your aim. Will knock everyone back. Run through hole. You'll use the same technique in Mercenaries mode in 4 and 5. It's essential in 5's No Mercy Mercenaries mode due to the sheer number of enemies they throw at you. He's a mini-boss enemy. Later on there's a guy with large claws who is just as dangerous. In Mercenaries mode on one map there's a guy with two chainsaws who's even tougher. The mini-boss enemies are WHY you practice the melee move. You try to fight them head on, you get killed instantly. You hit and run or stun and melee repeatedly until they die. They take far more damage to stun than normal enemies, just FYI.

>>7348825
She's a pain to deal with, but you can put her out of the way in most cases, and she doesn't follow you for the entire game. Just don't get too far away without her or the game might spawn an enemy near her and have her out the door before you can react for an instant game over. If she really kills your enjoyment of the game too much, get a 100% savegame and start a new game using the 2nd costume option. She'll be in a suit of armor that not only makes her invincible(no more using herbs on her), but also prevents enemies from picking her up and carrying her off.
If you enjoy the game, try RE5 as well. Pretty much the same thing gameplay-wise, but the inventory is simplified, you access the trader between levels instead of during, and you have a partner who also shoots at the zombies instead of just screaming for help and getting hit. RE5 Mercs also has more characters, levels, and a No Mercy mode that increases the number of enemies spawned at once and in total. RE5 Mercs can also be beaten, as it sends a set number of enemies at you instead of an endless swarm.

Don't buy any pistol until you can get the Red9, and only do ammo upgrades on the starter pistol if you are empty and NEED more ammo. Sell the Punisher you get for free, it can pierce and hit multiple enemies, but it doesn't get the bonus damage for headshots the other pistols get. Red9 is the most powerful, and worth upgrading fully, including the stock.
Don't upgrade the starting shotgun unless ammo like the starter pistol. Get the Riot Gun when you can and use that instead. Upgrade it.
Rifle is good, you'll need it later. Never bothered upgrading it unless I was desperate for rifle ammo, but you do you.
TMP is good. Get it, there's ammo for it everywhere. Get the stock too. Upgrade away.
You get a Broken Butterfly for free, and it's the only magnum you'll need. Upgrade away.

>> No.7349179

I think a first-timer should always play with a shotgun and always play with a rifle. A pistol too just because handgun ammo never stops dropping as if you had one, even if you decide not to. Setups without one or both are doable and I love meme setup playthroughs, but the game clearly expects you to have these as an assumption.

TMP is both a boss-killer and a pistol replacement in this game - its ammo drops infrequently but in large amounts. I don't recommend it to new players AS a pistol substitute because they don't know to peck a ganado one time and kick him, followed by knifing, instead of wasting loads of it; generally there still isn't enough to solely use it as your pistol if you intend to kill bosses with it though.

You can use a TMP as your pistol and a Punisher as "shotgun" for shotgun moments, but that's a shitshow I don't recommend (that was my Pro playthrough in the newer PC remaster and it wasn't pleasant). Magnums are also boss-killers. Rockets are weirdly inexpensive free passes on bosses, but that's a speed runner thing mostly and you're just depriving yourself.

Mine Launcher is my favorite shit weapon but its homing where it'll veer off in midair to an enemy seems like it has way more zany applications in outdoor areas that take place before that upgrade is available. Great NG+ meme.

Does anyone else skip on buying scopes for either of the rifles? There are hardly any points in the game where you can even really do super long range sniping and it doesn't make general sniping that much easier. I just don't find it worth the 3 inventory slots.

On the mine thrower, attaching the scope changes the gun from laser sight to having you look down a scope - that one is understandable. On the rifle and semi-auto rifle, you look down a scope already... without a scope. What does the scope addon actually do? Is it increased zoom levels? All villagers except chainsaw boys die automatically to grenades if they're anywhere near it, so what they do is gather every spawned enemy at once and grenade them together. Another thing speedruns do is run immediately into the cutscene building to spawn the full enemy count that the area can support.

There is also a delay for the scene end based on how long the last enemy's death animation is for you, which can cause you to kill more dudes than you need to (which won't even spawn you their drops unfortunately).
