Why do people say PC Engine has such a good shmup library? Sure, there's a large number of them, but SNES and MD both have much better quality shmups.

In terms of the Genesis, it's a serious SHMUP contender to the PC Engine.
But the SNES? What few SHMUPS it has are laden with slowdowns from the shitty CPU.
As for Genesis vs PC Engine, Genesis has some shooters that are better than anything on PCE, but on games that were ported to both, the PCE version is usually superior.

I like a lot of the shooting games on the PC-Engine they are fun and interesting. Almost all my favorite consoles have great shooting games but I don't think one stands above any other in that category.

I think because they went full on with cd, games like cotton on pc engine cd have a lot of graphical variety because of the large memory, compare that with another nice shmup on genesis Gynog where in comparison it uses lot more repeating tiles. Its seems that most of the shooters follow that pattern though there are a fair number of pc engine shooters that seemed a bit slapped together.
