Its good. I liked it more than doom 2 because I could actually bring myself to finish it. The only thing I didn't like about it was the "what the fuck did this switch just do" syndrome in most of the levels.

>> No.7340901

I wouldn't say it's better, it's just a really good set of maps with a nice scripting system. I do prefer it over Doom II, but it only succeeds because of D2's experimentation.

The level design you guys are describing actually sounds exactly like Hexen's problems. Strong gameplay foundation confounded by switch-hunting and having to search for what effect hitting a switch had.

It's rough that they apparently didn't learn anything in the intervening time.

Doom 64 was made by a professional team with a cohesive art direction, music created to flow with that art direction, and people familiar with Doom's tools trying to go beyond what Doom did. Doom and Doom II were somewhat rushed, somewhat cobbled together games. Assets in Doom came from all over. Claymation, toys, etc.

Not even close. Doom PS1 using the old Doom artstyle with the new sound effects and music don't match at all. Meanwhile Doom 64 was built from the ground up to match the new sound effects/music. Doom PS1 also isn't a brand new game so there's no comparison.

>stole assets / music
Where? Doom PS1 uses Doom 1/2's assets, Doom 64's assets are remade from the ground up. PS1 and 64 have two completely different soundtracks, sharing only the title song, but more importantly, Aubrey Hodges was the composer for both games.

>> No.7341953

>>7341931
The colored lighting also comes from PS1 Doom.

>PS1 and 64 have two completely different soundtracks
No. They do share several tracks, they sound differently due to different sound fonts. Due to the CD format, PS1's track have higher quality, and they're really all songs, while D64 have some that are just background sounds. Generally, Doom 64 sounds more evil and menacing, while PSX Doom sounds more sad and depressing.

Here's a comparison. It's clearly the same track, despite sounding differently.

It was trash on the N64. The only way it's playable is if you use the sourceport/hack and ripped WAD from the ROM or the official re-release because you have a real goddamn mouse and keyboard controller, not some fucking imprecise abomination made for baby hands.
Doom 1/2/Final is still better, but 64 is still very good if played properly. And it's the last good Doom. 3 is utter laughable trash and NuDoom and NuDoom: The Sequel should be fucking deleted from this fucking shitty earth.

It's.... Okay. The SSG is definitely a bit more powerful because though it dies the same damage, it has even less frames for its reload than the standard DooM II ssg so the DooM 64 SSG has a higher rate of fire.

Plasma Rifle fires slower for the same damage per shot as the original.

BFG tracer origin point works differently and often produces less damage than the older BFG despite having the same damage output across the board.

Unmaker makes all power weapons besides rockets obsolete.
