This lad gets it. The music in the original is the best soundtrack of any Wipeout game of that era. Maybe even any racing game of that era. So atmospheric and memorable. Perfectly suited the darker (and superior) look and feel of the first game.

the Saturn Wipeout has a few tracks not found on the PS1 version. the European Wipeout has a few extra tracks from Orbital and The Chemical Brothers not found on the US release. Saturn port was pretty good. But the Saturn port of XL had a stutter y framerate. Wipeout 64 is a pretty good racing game, though. I like it more than the Extreme G games. But I don't find it to be as good as F-Zero X, or San Francisco Rush 2049 (Dreamcast has a better version of this).

Wipeout 64 does use a lot of compression for the audio samples used in the music. Like the tony Hawk games on the N64, Wipeout uses large audio sample chunks, cut up. The game even has "Please Wait" loading screens just so the N64 can decompress the audio files.

GX's controls are definitely sweet, seemingly umatched by Wipeout, in my experience. Then again I have not played any of the newest releases. But, F-Zero was there at ground-level popularizing the genre, so your analogy does not quite fit. If I ever find an AX machine I will probably camp there for a while.
