Link's reflection disappears before Dark Link appears. Water is reflective. Water temple. Makes sense to place it there.

I always thought of the Zelda 2 fight as being a fight against your own shadow. Like Peter Pan. Peter pan is the source of a lot of Link's inspiration.

Was anyone else supremely disappointed by the shadow link fight in Zelda 64? It should have been a real swordsman duel instead of "spam hammer to win".

I actually think its pretty cool for what it is/for the time. The way he'll jump on your sword and mock you, its pretty cinematic and forward thinking for such an early action/adventure game. Also the way dark links starts acting on his own more instead of just mirroring link the longer the fight lasts (if I remember he also starts to solidify when this happens). Its just really cool thematically

It is a shame it can be cheesed, but still

Yes, its a jungian meme which was very common in literature and pop culture way before Zelda was a thing. Joseph Campbell , hero´s journey, man and his symbols and all that, is was very prominent in fantasy stuff from the 80s and 90s. Very big with screenplay writers.

Everyone says you can just use Din's Fire for this fight, but for some reason this never worked for me? I liked to use the hammer and hookshot during this part just because it feels fun to use your full arsenal. IMO, this is the best fight in the game. Ganon is more cinematic but that fight was ultimately a lot more simple and easy. This one is the best from this game.

People did not commonly know about the hammer back in the day, and not everyone did the fire temple first, the water temple was actually easier to access. Except I tried the hammer because I had an entire arsenal and the sword didn't seem to be working. Why wouldn't you experiment? Why shouldn't someone try everything at their disposal? Claiming "they didn't know about something" is not an excuse in a game that rewards experimentation.

Stalfos in OoT is based on Zelda II's sword & shield Stalfos (technically Stalfos Knight).
Shadow/Dark Link makes an appearance.
Movement options seem very much inspired by Zelda II combat, particularly downward->jump slash.
Zelda II also introduced spells, which appear in limited item form in OoT.
Forest Temple originally looked like a Zelda II palace.

There's a theory in an earlier thread that Dark Link was supposed to be in the Forest Temple back when it more blatantly looked like a Palace as a giant Zelda II reference. Dark Link as a copy of Link would've matched the boss theme, with Phantom Ganon being a doppelganger of Ganondorf. Someone also mentioned that, in the room you fight Stalfos in the final game, Dark Link is spawned in the debug room, which was thought to be an AI test. Finally, consider that there's even an elevator in the final Forest Temple, completing the callback.
