I don't get the hate for this game.
I find it pretty soulful.

>t the hate for this game.
Who hates it? It's not like any FF game is hard anyways.

>> No.7331810

you don't find it insulting to you?
im not american and I know the story of how this became, they thought you were a bit... stup... not smart, so you get a very simple game, like, insulting simple

No FF game is hard or complex.

The final boss is complete bullshit if you don't cheese him. Forgive the green text story.
>get to his fourth and final phase
>MC gets hit for 2/3 of his health and dies
>next turn tell partner to revive
>boss goes first; paralyzes partner
>next turn boss petrifies partner
>game over

Why can't they give you the partner that has petrify immunity for the final boss fight? Or at least let you choose?

I imaigne they just thought that most console players in NA were young children. It would be pretty stupid of them to think that burgers couldn't handle rpgs seeing as game like dungeons & dragons and ultima were inspirations for jrpgs

yes, they loved wizardry, which is confusing, they took a lot of inspiration from those, maybe it was just thinking about the kids

It even says it's an entry-level RPG on the box.

Those games were played by a handful of nerds in a time when nerd didn't mean anime and vidya fan but a researcher and math freak or something. The SNES was made for children.

It's not insulting, it's just really boring. The implied insult that it's for big dumb Americans doesn't even land because the original Final Fantasy was a D&D campaign with the serial numbers filed off in the first place.

You don't play JRPGs for excitement. The best way to describe it is think about it as medidation. Often these games have fantastic music. You listen to the music, grind for those sweet numbers, ocassionally experience those typical sentimental JRPG moments. It's not for everyone.

I am glad I was wrong in my assumption that it would be insulting, im glad you can enjoy it for what it is

It's fine in premise to release an RPG that scales younger than most text and menu heavy ones typically would. The specific focus on America is weird because I'm sure there was just as much a market for such a game in Japan. But that quirk doesn't come through in the game itself so no big deal.

How about Euros who got no JRPGs?

I did enjoy the weird semi-zelda like item solving mechanics in the game. They weren't particularly complex or difficult, but it put some variety into the dungeon delving and broke up the monotony of just walking to and fro. One part I immensely enjoyed was no random encounters. What a relief that was. But then it gets into the problem of just lining narrow walkways with unavoidable enemies.
The art style isn't half bad either. It's a bit boxy and incredibly simplified in certain map areas, but it's pleasant to look at for the most part.

I like how the enemy sprites change depending on how much damage they take.

Yeah it's bizarrely arrogant. The country that made DnD and the most complex CRPGs needs schooling from square soft?

>> No.7333094

I think the "RPG for Americans" meant "American console audience". Square had decided against releasing FFV for the SNES thinking it would be too advanced for American Nintendo players, but considered a DOS port.

I just play JRPGs as an adventure simulator, I don't really pay attention to the music, usually play it with a radio show on and the music lowered

To be fair FFV is pretty trash so it's not like we lost out much. MQ is unironically a more interesting game

No. RNG in this game almost guarantees you'll die at least once before the end.
