What are the best JRPGs for this system? So far I have only played VII which I liked. Bonus points if the combat isn't turn-based (besides Legend of Mana)

All jarpigs are shit. It's like asking which turd tastes better.

FFT, but that's probably already on your list. For something more active, look at Parasite Eve and Vagrant Story. They're somewhat similar on a basic level but you'll also get a drastically different experience with each.

If you want more active than that, there are some swing-sword -> level-up games people could recommend, but I don't know if you consider that a JRPG at all.

It's fairly memed, but since you don't want turn based, check out Valkyrie Profile. Just know if you don't want spoilers, you'll inevitably get stuck.

Wouldn't you want to play the SNES Star Ocean first, though?

it's not a requirement at all, unless you want the backstory on claude's dad, which you only see for 5 minutes at the start, and only if you pick claude

It's a really broad range.
>Star Ocean, Tales of Destiny, Tales of Eternia
All of these switch to battle screens to engage in live combat from the overworld, sort of like a hybrid.

Then there's games like
>Brave Fencer Musashi and Castlevania Symphony of the Night
They are on the far end of "swing sword -> level up" towards an action game, just with stats and character improvements and such, but you'd be hard pressed to find someone still calling it JRPG at this level of removal.
