One of my favorite retro genres is overhead run-and-gun games. And one of my favorite overhead run-and-gun games is C-Dogs, which you can get the latest version at http://cxong.github.io/cdogs-sdl/ I'm the developer

Anyone else like overhead run-and-gun games? What's your favorite? What do you like about it?

Shit's classic. I killed 3 joysticks while playing Tower Assault. I still have a huge notebook with self drawn maps of all locations including keys, additional lives, terminal positions, exits etc. AB:TW had like 200 routes to the final boss. Shame that this title had some locations bug that freezed the game. Anyway i still love to play sometimes with my friends.

First things first: You should be playing the Amiga versions if at all possible, and since this is the internet it absolutely is. They all stand head and shoulders above the DOS ports.

The best starting point is Alien Breed Special Edition '92. It's the budget-priced re-imagining of the original Alien Breed that Team 17 put out during the wait for AB2 and it fixed some of the big problems with the original game, tweaked the difficulty curve, and generally added a bunch of polish. You could call it an expansion pack, I suppose, but it's standalone and is widely regarded as the best in the series. If you enjoy that then by all means go back to the original Alien Breed 1 as you'll enjoy it, but start with '92.

From there? Alien Breed II is next. Brutally fucking difficult with possibly the most sadistic first level in gaming history but it's doable, especially with two players. Improved the graphics, threw in more variety and selectable characters but somehow didn't seem to reach the heights of '92. AGA Amiga version (A1200/4000) is the best, closely followed by the OCS one.

Tower Assault is the last in the trilogy and the first to add branching paths and retreat mode. Slightly less brutal than AB2 but still hard as balls once it gets going. Opinions are usually divided between this and '92 for where the series peaked. For me it'd be a toss-up. The first version to get a truly solid PC port (the CD-ROM version NOT the floppy one which was completely gutted) but still best played on an AGA Amiga.

>>732459
Completely different game and Alien Breed in name only. The games on Steam are the modern reboot.

>> No.732492

>>732408
As for what to expect from the AB series? Difficulty. These are some fucking hard games and they're made all the more difficult by their love of exploding decks and timed races through maze-like corridors to reach the deck lift. Screw one up? It's an instant game over, no matter how many lives you have.

They can be deliberately vindictive, arbitrary, and contain some examples of truly wrong-headed anti-player game design. At some point you WILL accidentally trigger a permanently closing fire-door and have to restart the game.

That said they've played host to some of the most amazing multiplayer moments I've had in a lifetime of gaming and it's entirely because of how evil they can be. Just be aware of what you're getting yourself in to and don't play with anyone punchy.

There was a game before C-Dogs called Cyberdogs. They look and play similarly - C-Dogs was a cross between a rewrite and sequel of sorts - but the gameplay had important differences. In Cyberdogs you can buy/sell weapons and ammo; in C-Dogs there are deathmatches and campaigns.

Hm, maybe you guys could help me. I used to play a overhead run-and-gun game on an old Apple II (not sure if it were available on other systems) during my early school years, but I can't remember the name of it.

You played as a toy soldier, and I think the intro involved a toy store aisle with the chump you playing coming to life or whatever. The game then featured a candy level, a dinosaur level, and other similar themes, with a very colorful aesthetic.

I even remember the guy going "fire in the hole" when you used some ability (might just have been a grenade, actually).

Lots of guns, lots of enemies, I think you needed key items to progress in the levels... Oh, and batteries were health pickups. Pretty sure you got hiscore as well. Anyone remember it?

>no mouse support
Not much point; you could make the mouse emulate joystick controls but it'll still be clunky. If you mean mouse aim then it won't be the same game; I may as well make a crimsonland clone. If you mean mouse in the menus, that would be nice but it's a far off goal for me since it's not that big of a deal.

>no modern resolution support so the game looks like anus
You can change the resolution up to 800x600, and the scaling up to 4x (for a total of 3200x2400). No widescreen support though; I'd like to add that eventually too.
