This is the only game I can think of where just about every gamer has played it, aside from maybe Tetris and Wii Sports

WTF is "Wii Sports"?

>> No.7325493

I never had any nintendo consoles so I've never actually played any nintendo games. I just bought a NES Classic Edition off eBay, like just a few hours ago, and I should have researched it better but oh well. It has Mario, Zelda, and Metroid on it, and I'm interested in not only playing them, but learning them as speed games. My question is is that going to be a good method of playing the games? I've heard some people complaining about trying to play old games originally made for CRTs on new TVs through HDMI. I figure I'll still be able to play the games normally fine but do you think playing them through HDMI on a modern TV will make it unviable for speedrunning?

>do you think playing them through HDMI on a modern TV will make it unviable for speedrunning?
Yes. And even if it doesn't, no one will accept it as legit because you aren't playing on original hardware. It's a retarded meme but that's the way it is.

You're only going to get hostile reactions, unlike youtube, twitch and the rest of the internet, speedrunning is heavily disliked here for pushing up retro prices, taking the oxygen away from any real discussions and inviting the worst kind of people.
If you're just trolling and already knew all of this above, fuck you, if you are sincere, god-speed friend, but stay on twitch and youtube, this place isn't for your kind.

The NES Classic is listed as one of the approved ways to run to run the games but either way I don't expect to ever be leaderboard relevant. It's just for fun but then I started to wonder what it is about playing old games on new TVs that people dislike so much.

People try to say that "Tetris is the best selling game ever".
If it was, how come there's 2 videos of the original 1984 release for the Elektronika 60, and one is only on original hardware?

Doubtful. You have no idea how big the game was at home and in the arcade-with both versions appearing in arcades.

I have never played it. I didn't grow up with a NES and when I finally got to try games in that system I ignored Mario because it just didn't interest me, I just wanted to play Ninja Gaiden, Castlevania, etc. I'd imagine most zoomers and late millenials probably haven't played it, either.

I definitely think it's the most FAMOUS video game though, everyone from grandpas to kids would probably recognise SMB even if they haven't played it themselves, the only ones that come close to that status are Tetris and Pac-man.

What about Pokémon?

>> No.7329286

>>7328321
Well, my parents know about Pokemon but they have no idea that it's a game franchise, they just remember the cartoon and pokemania from 22 years ago. It's an extremely recognisable media franchise, but not just due to the games if that makes sense.

When you talk about SMB, Pac-man, or Tetris, though, there's no confusion what's you're talking about. Everybody thinks about the games.
