I strongly disagree

>> No.7320895

yeah sotn is objectively worse than any other cv game because it doesn't have chiptunes, rips off metroid, doesn't let you play as a belmont (richter mode doesn't count), and the creators clearly didn't care to write a sensible story. sotn is a clear cash grab they put zero effort into and the fact that it's so popular blows my mind.

Castlevania is the best. Followed by Dracula's Curse. Then probably Super IV. Simon's Quest gets honorable mention, but is not the same kind of game. I'm not sure I understand the appeal of the other games.

I wouldn't say that SoTN was zero effort, it does look like they put a lot of heart in it. More likely they just had no idea what the fuck they were doing and just threw in what they liked. In fact, the more I look into what the stories in the older games/manual were like and the more I think on it, the more I suspect that they only cared about what they could do with Castlevania, not what it was about/supposed to be like/what the original director and teams intended.

I don't want to shit on Igarashi and Hagihara for wanting to follow their visions for the series, I mean shit, we probably all have an idea of what it should be, but IGA basically used it as a platform for his bad melodramatic stories. I don't know what the fuck direction Hagihara was meaning to go in, but I'd argue a lot of stuff people like to give IGA shit for started with Hagi's games, including the blander level designs and screwing with the lore to justify stupid shit in the later games. Hard to imagine that Alucard used to be entirely a vampire and that Dracula had no tragic or redeeming features. 3's intro scrawl in English might put it in a silly way, but what he intended to do and what it likely result in is honestly terrifying when you actually think about it.

Probably one the more based takes I've seen on the series as a whole.
>Simon's Quest gets honorable mention, but is not the same kind of game
I don't know, I mean yeah it's different and does things the others don't, and I know SoTNfags like to point to it to as a precursor, but it still strikes me as classicvania even if it doesn't do it very well. It gives far more of a fuck about platforming than SoTN or probably even Rondo.
>I'm not sure I understand the appeal of the other games
You mean the metroidvanias or just about everything after 4 period including the other 16-bit classics? Because to an extent, I'd agree with you either way even if some of them are my favorites in the whole franchise. 4 was the last of the classicvanias that gave a damn about trying to improve on what the NES games did instead of just throwing in wild gimmicks or upping the difficulty thinking hard = good instead of well designed challenge. Then the metroidvanias came in and either only cared about exploration and collecting for the sake of it or actually gave a damn about the series' original design principles and tried to incorporate them.

These and rondo make of the holy trinity of the best Castlevania games.
Then Castlevania, then 3, then IV.

what, are you serious? how long have you been on 4chan?

>> No.7325548

>>7325134
The metroidvanias we got were flawed as an evolution of the classic formula but I can't fault them for wanting to do something else. As great as the old games are, they're just a very thin concept, about as sanded down as a game can be that isn't a pure arcade game.
