Aeris' house always bugged me. Every single other part of the slums look like absolute shit, but the area around Aeris' house (and right next to a shitty looking slum), there is sunlight, and a waterfall, and a garden. It just doesn't make a lick of sense, and that's not even taking into account that Aeris and her mother should have been raped and raided on a regular basis due to having a nice house with nice things in a shitty slum.

This mostly, and it being alluded heavily to in the Japanese version, that subtlety being lost in translation.
I mean, if you take the moment to make it sink in it makes perfect sense given how and where she met Cloud and their succeeding adventures together. She is meant to be the prostitute with the heart of gold trope, and it fits with the whole life mother martyr image.

More than likely, Aeris and her mother are well liked. Aeris is, too an extent, under the protection of the Turks, and thus, Shinra. Its really that simple, its more of an illusion than anything. I would imagine Aeris grew the garden with her mother and it was just a real shithole prior to that, but whatever, peopel will bitch about cliches vs a lack of imagination.

The actual answer is that they wanted Aeris to stand out and seem strange compared to the rest of the citizens in Midgar, and making her house resemble a sanctuary helped push that idea.

With enough effort, you can call almost every protagonist in modern fiction a Christ character. It's one of the trappings of a pleb-tier English undergrad. If anything, Aeris is the Jesus character as she has to sacrifice herself in order to cleanse the world. Or Barret could be the Christ figure, because he leads a rag-tag group of counter-culture individuals who concern themselves with the poor and the sick.

The point is, there is no point in claiming Aeris is a prostitute. It adds no depth to her character because the text doesn't support it. It's trying to mash a square peg into a triangle hole.

I just finished replaying it for the first time since I was 16 (26 now). The story made a LOT more sense and I got a better appreciation for the game in general. I mean, it's easy to brush aside Cloud's "personality Crisis" as stupid when you're younger, but with a more mature mindset you can get some better appreciation for the themes in the story

I also managed to beat both Weapons without using a single KotR summon. Didn't think I'd ever do something like that, but it was incredibly satisfying, and not nearly as hard as I expected (just time consuming).
