There's a huge after market for PSX laser assemblies, many refurbished, because the originals were so failure prone.
Besides the weak leaser, the laser assembly ran on easily-worn/cracked plastic gears.
Saturns consoles seem to have held up better with time, even though the CD cases would Allah Akbar if you so much as breathed on them.
The N64s are cartridge-based, have many fewer moving parts, and have held up great with time.
How did the overall shit build quality of PSX not harm Sony's brand?

It almost seems like planned obsolescence.

Yeah I dumped what small collection I had for it when my last one died completely out of the blue couldn't be bothered to figure it out

I agree, but it's striking how poorly the actual hardware has aged, and how little Sony and the PSX's reputation has suffered from it.

What do you mean? They're just regular jewel cases just like the PSX. The arms on the front break off fairly easily, but these were standard. Too bad Super Jewel Box didn't come out until the CD format was mostly obsolete.

Its a problem with the early models desu.
>The N64s are cartridge-based, have many fewer moving parts, and have held up great with time.
>cartridge holds up better than CD player
That goes without saying. Each N64 game was a lot more expensive than a PS1 game though. Also nintendo took a high profit margin, considering it was priced the same as a PS1 despite the lack of CD player.

The build quality of PS1 was patchy, but unfortunately it was the only good 5th gen console too. Had the Saturn used SGI CPU, Atari Jaguar wasn't released too early, and Nintendo gave an open source documentation for the N64 and a CD drive, the PS1 wouldn't win though, or at least they wouldn't monopolize the market as much.

The Saturn cases in the US were big, and prone to shattering.

Same goes for ps2. Sony just didn't care about the quality when they sold like hot cakes.

>> No.7310757

as shit the build quality of the PSX was, it was still better than PS2/3/4/5, which is the sad thing.

No. But it was one of the worst 6th gen.

I've owned each revision of the PS1, PS2 and PS3 (excluding some "silent" revisions with only internal changes) and the slim PS3 (not super slim) is Sony's best built console IMO. Specifically the 25XX model. Even now at ~10 years old, most of the ones you'd pick up secondhand work without any issues.

Yep, the hallmark of a well-built console is having to turn it upside down to get it to read discs

All of this was just problems with really early revisions of the console. From like 550X onward it's really good.

Its also the sole reason why the Gameboy beat the game gear, it just had WAY more quality games.

Can confirm. My PSX was only reading discs when turned upside down.
