Can't someone who knows what's going on here make a proper, respectably thread that could serve as the hub for findings the way the Gigaleak threads did (to some extent, I know a lot was going on in the TCRF discord as well)? Friendly reminder not to engage with anyone implying Shigesato Ito had any involvement in the development of a Zelda game. This ham-fisted false narrative is being pushed by an individual who wants to create “lore” where there is none. This is absurd for the following reasons:

1. In this interview https://www.glitterberri.com/developer-interviews/miyamoto-horii-discussion Shigeru Miyamoto mentions that he’s worked with Shigesato Itoi on the story of “games”. Note that Japanese has no plural and he’s likely just referring to Mother, as this interview took place in 1989. He goes on to state that “The stories of Mario and Zelda titles have always been supplemental to the actual gameplay.” Does this also imply that Itoi worked on the story of a Mario game? Of course not. Miyamoto is essentially name-dropping his friendship with a prolific writer and pop culture figure to another industry friend. It is not explicitly stated what the two collaborared on. (But it’s obviously Mother)

2. Shigesato Itoi was an incredibly successful writer of several best selling books. The notion that he would not only write the very minimal story and dialog of a Zelda game, but that it would be scrapped and no credit or acknowledgement of his involvement would be made, is an utterly moronic idea. Someone of Itoi’s notability would clearly be used in the marketing of the game, and his ideas used in every aspect of the game design, as in the case of Mother. He would certainly be credited for his work, whether used or unsused as well.

3. Zelda A Link to the Past already has a script credit: Kensuke Tanabe. At the time, a member of R&D4 who had worked on several Mario games, he would be the likely choice to produce the script for a Zelda game, not a best selling author and copywriter.

Thank you for your time and I hope this puts that nonsense to bed. Please don’t spread gay cancer any further.

Hey, person who browses TCRF server daily here. Rusty is known to get quite dramatic with small things and turns them into big issues for no reason. I have no idea why he decided to freak the out for no goddamn when this guy simply wanted to share tools to help people out on what's considered to be the ultimate unused content discovery since RE1.5, but I assume it's due to how manually unstable most of the TCRF admins are.(I got banned from the TCRF wiki because someone was using my IP to post weird shit in IRC chat, now I can't continue my work on the Persona 2 pages. Doesn't even help the game is so obscure and I'm the only one who even gives a shit to investigate the game. I emailed XKeeper for a appeal to my ban, but he's purposely ignoring my email for weeks now despite being the one who banned me according to the site)
If you want to post your tools onto TCRF again, make sure to edit enough that it looks different. Or post it when Rusty isn't around.(Which is early mornings in the U.S)
Otherwise I'm sorry this had to happen if you were that guy who got banned.

The mods made like four boards nobody asked for that are super dead/pointless, such as a board for mobage gacha trash that doesn't allow generals. Then, instead of making a board that's been requested for years, /v2k/, the mods decided to completely fuck up the rules for what counts as retro and what doesn't. GameCube, PS2, Xbox, and the GBA are allowed. No games released past 2008 are allowed since the PS2 lived forever in third world shitholes. The PSP and DS are not retro. Crysis is retro. Modern Warfare 2 is retro. The word retro has no meaning anymore when it's this inconsistent.

Long term though I think the goal is to recover the remaining 16 MB that are still somewhat on the cart. It's weird how memory works on it but since it's flash memory some anons were saying it could be recovered from the overdump but it'd be hard.

Good theory, but some people are suggesting that you didn't get an ocarina until after obtaining the spiritual stones

>> No.7312772

>>7312759
It would've been more likely that you didn't need to use those notes until after the temple.

The first song you get that needs any special button is the Song of Time that's used to open the temple doors, so you would've gotten it then probably and from there needed to use the special buttons for the warp songs.

>> No.7312796

>>7312759
Maybe, the button thing also makes sense. Especially considering flat/sharp would almost do the exact same thing.

>> No.7312805

>>7312772
If the spiritual stones were shaped like natural, sharp, and flat notes, I don't think A would be considered a special note. I think playing sharp and flat notes would be special notes, and the Ocarina would be way more tedious to play because of it.

While the Dungeon design began with the devs harkening to Zelda 1, but in 3D. The screenshot of a wall room where there's a beta wall master looks like it could be something like Level 1 Eagle in 3D.

Yeah but no songs require it, and playing songs sharp or flat doesn't "count" as playing them, meaning that sharp C-Right is treated as a different note than C-Right. >> No.7313710

It's true, but only indirectly. There was a Koizumi interview that explained OoT came from a desire to make a Zelda in the style of AoL again and him messing around with the starfox engine, which was confirmed by the gigaleak. After SM64 was just released he proposed a new Zelda on the SM64 engine which used the ideas he had already developed beforehand and it took off from there.

How do you know that? And can we stop pretending that Aria is her canon name? Really triggers my Zelda lore autism when fans come up with fanfic-y shit like that and endlessly repeat it like it's true. While her object is still in the final game (although uncompatible with the final engine) there's are dummied out actors. Two right after the Stalfos entry. Most likely one was the Iron Knuckle when it still carried a sword and shield (and not an axe) and the other one is most likely object_human's/Aria's actor. She was most likely implemented as a test of human interactions and expressions - she has a WIDE array of expressions.
It's often believed, due to design similiraties, she became Adult Malon. Who also has various facial textures, IIRC.

It's just such an obvious fan character name. Never mind that it's too close to Saria. Never mind that they likely wouldn't have named a character that early in development. Never mind that no other OoT besides the composer brothers have musical names, and never mind that the ocarina probably wasn't implemented at this point and that there's no reason to think the girl would even have anything to do with music.

Yeah, crash coarse on music notation. In Western music there's 12 notes per octave then they repeat themselves. We call these notes:
>A, A#/Bb, B, C, C#/Db, D, D#/Eb, E, F, F#, Gb, G, G#/Ab
So going from A to B is a whole step and in between that is A#/Bb. A# and Bb are the same exact pitch just a different name for it. They're technically not the same strictly speaking in terms of theory but they sound exactly the same. The orcarina only has 5 buttons (notes) that are:
>D, F, A, B, and D again but an octave higher
Holding down Z gives you a flat version of the note so:
>Db, Fb, Ab, Bb, and Db.
R gives a sharp version so:
>D#, F#, A#, B#, and D#
The joystick also let's you go up or down a half step on top of Z/R. This means you can go up or down a whole step. If you combine the two you can use all 12 notes and then some. Like >>7313701 was saying, it probably would've been annoying to play. It's still cool they gave the option to use them though.

Do you know if the pattern at the bottom is in the final game? You can check me on this, but I translated it to "Geldo's Typography". I had a good laugh when I saw the word typography there, but the other word was a bitch to translate since the letters are so smudged. That is until I noticed the same word is written much more clearly in Hyrule Historia (pic related). Was this not in the final game, or am I getting excited over nothing?

The carpenter's tent doesn't have any text on it, and I'm pretty sure all the Gerudo text in the final game is just gibberish (usually just the alphabet in order, or in reverse order). They don't actually start spelling real words in Gerudo until BotW.
It's really interesting that in the beta they actually do spell things out like they do for Hylian, and that it says the exact same thing there in Hyrule Hystoria.

Part of me always doubted the age of some the so-called development materials in Hyrule Historia, but the appearance of that phrase in a 1997 build of the game makes me think that pic related really was drawn/written around that time!

I think in general people on here get pissed when remasters fuck up the style of the game too much (Medieval becoming cartoony, getting the generic unreal 4 engine plastic look, losing all it's edge). I have no anger left for remakes/remasters, they pretty much always turn out inferior to the original release. If the devs making the remake can't even accurately portray everything shipped with the original release, how can I expect them to competently implement things that not even the original devs were able to fully realize? And that's not even getting into Nintendo specifically, who have the gall to charge $60 for repackaged roms they got off of Google that still have emulator signatures inside of their hex code.

There's only a handful of cases I can think of where a remake/remaster has lived up to the original, let alone surpass it in quality, and they're fringe cases at best. Animal Crossing for the GameCube, which only came out 1 year after the N64 release, and the Taxman & Stealth remakes of Sonic 1/2/CD, which were made by a pair of giga-brain autistic Sonic fans who approached Sega with the game engine they created from scratch to mimic the physics of the classic Sonic games just so they could add QoL changes like 60 fps and widescreen support. All other remakes/remasters that I've witnessed have fallen flat and completely missed the point of the originals and what made them good, and on top of that they usually can't help themselves and start taking liberties with the source material because "we think this is better :)" or "this detail/line/scenario could invoke negative feelings in someone :(".

What pisses me off is Nintendo claiming that the Master Quest version of the game is what Ura Zelda was supposed to be.

>Colosseum for dragon boss in fire temple is gone
>God rays in majority of the game are gone
>Water temple had an entire floor removed (this one I'm not complaining about too much)
>Texture resolution is way lower (they could've fixed this in the master quest version, never played it)
>Several rooms removed
I know a bunch of other areas got shrunken down in size but I'm drawing a blank on them. I think the fire temple and water temple got whacked the hardest. I might be wrong on the god rays to, but I didn't notice nearly as many in the base game as I'm seeing in these screenshots.

I actually wonder if making a massive game then cutting it down in size played a huge part in making the game world seem huge. There's a lot of big expansive epic game worlds like OOT but few really sell it.

It's just strange and kinda dumb that instead of going "oh yeah, we ended up using the ideas we had for Majora's Mask", which they usually own up to anyway, they pretended like Master Quest was Ura and not just a romhack they threw together for the Gamecube rerelease.

A lot of these maps give me TP vibes. Speaking of TP, has any beta content been dug up for it? Stuff I remember from screenshots:
>Gohma chasing Link in a large cave
>Seasonal system, multiple screenshots of Hyrule in winter, fall, and normal.
>Large river/fishing area that looks nothing like the final game
>Lots of trees in Hyrule Field
>Castle town was a lot more brown
>Ordon woods was literally a woodland area (pic related)
>Magic meter
Probably more I'm forgetting. Supposedly TP was ready to ship in Summer 2005 but they delayed the game by over a year to rework it for the Wii. I wonder how different the original version would've been if it was just on GameCube. During interviews with Aonuma, he said their original goal with TP was to do what they couldn't do with Ocarina.

Not original anon, and I can't remember the exact details, but Nintendo just lifted someone's open-source emulator and used it somehow (for profit, of course). It was likely a lot more involved that this, but you sometimes get "signatures" in software; someone writes their name in ascii directly into the binary. Some autistic discovered Nintendo used someone else's emulator via similar means Or perhaps it had easily identifiable errors in emulation specific to that emulator or something. Probably, Majora's Mask seems to use plenty of ideas from Zelda 64 and Ura Zelda (The "Shadow Magic" making you invisible is so clearly the Stone Mask in effect).

The Gerudo Pirates are a lot less neutral and a lot more ruthless and cruel than the Gerudo Thieves from Hyrule. Just look how they wrecked Lulu's room.

While the Gerudo Thieves just follow orders but really don't do all that much besides protecting the fortress under the command of Ganon and Twinrova while Ganon primarily uses the Demon Tribe (Moblins, Stalfos, Wallmasters, Gohma, etc etc etc.) as his main force.

..No? One of the Gossip Stones even claims that "Gerudos worship Ganondorf almost like a god." The only thing I can think of are the Iron Knuckles, which are Gerudo if you look closely but it's barely touched upon in the final game. There's a line stating that Nabooru "is experimenting in brainwashing many people at the ruins in the desert," which I think is either a mistranslation or implied to be Twinrova propaganda. Either way it's suggested that Ganondorf was mistreating his people but it could be read as being other rebels like Nabooru.

>Encyclopedia was never "complete" bullshit, just "mixed" bullshit because there was no way to verify which parts were from developer documents and which parts were their fanmade interpretation. The swapped placement of OoS/A & LA was reused on the official series website timeline after all. This somewhat aligns with the proto-text, so the simplest explanation is that it's correct in this instance. The final game probably changed it to some nondescript "goddess of the sand" because someone (probably Miyamoto) had second thoughts about depicting different sects of the same mythology.

THIS GAME USED TO HAVE HOTELS AND IT ANNOYS ME THAT THEY AXED THEM

Zora hotel:

>The Zora Prince Hotel offers wake-up calls as one of its many services.
>Welcome, is what I'd normally say, but...

The receptionist isn't sure whether or not he can allow a Hylian to stay at the hotel. Gotta go talk to King Zora first:

>Oh, I'm absolutely worried sick...
>My beloved Princess Ruto went to feed Lord Jabu-Jabu, and hasn't returned ever since...
>What's that? You know where she is?
>...Inside of Lord Jabu-Jabu's belly!? That's impossible! Lord Jabu-Jabu is our guardian! He would never eat the princess! Although, ever since that Ganondorf man came here, Lord Jabu-Jabu has been acting very strange... >Very well, I'll allow you to see Lord Jabu-Jabu. You also have my permission to stay at the Zora Prince Hotel! >In exchange, however...
>Please, bring my beloved Ruto back as soon as possible!

Back to the Zora Prince Hotel:

>Welcome...
>All guests of the King are welcome here... Oh, don't worry, we won't be charging you for your stay!
>Will you be staying here?
>Yep!
>Nope..
>Would you like to receive a wake-up call?
>Absolutely!
>Do Not Disturb!
>When would you like for us to wake you up?
>6:00AM
>8:00AM

This is especially frustrating because, while we've always known the game had an internal clock, the only instance where the time gets references is when you strike a Gossip Stone with your sword.

Don't they? They might not be as pointy as Hylian ears but two things: 1) in Breath of the Wild, if it takes place afterwards, they absolutely are, 2) in A Link to the Past, Oracles' prequel, the Hylian race was considered to have died out and the current people are their descendants, so likely the same applies to Gerudos in this timeline and Din is of Gerudo/Hylian heritage.

Oh foke, then that does mean Encyclopedia is probably right about the Hylians and Gerudos disagreeing that the "goddess of the sand" is evil or benevolent, and the proto reveals that said goddess is Din. WTF happened in the original mythology to make them think this? Were Gerudos basically the Hyrulean equivalent of Satanists? Maybe the unnecessary recap of the Hyrule origin myth was supposed to have a purpose and explain something we didn't know?
Obviously it's no longer relevant and the final leaves more room from goddesses like Hylia, but the proto explains why Encyclopedia claims the Kokiri were a subspecies of Hylian - because they were privvy to the fact that they were originally supposed to grow old, and either the writers misinterpreted the idea or the proto's statement that the Deku Tree created them was supposed to be a lie like them dying if they left the forest.

Two big reasons: 1) Japanese Encyclopedia had NintendoDREAM fan magazine writers admitting in a lore disclaimer that they had artistic liberties (read: making shit up) with the source material, which was even known about right after the Japanese release, so you get bizarre statements never repeated elsewhere like the Kokiri being Hylians and Termina being a Majora-induced fever dream of Skull Kid's or whatever that may or may not be fanfiction, and 2) English Encyclopedia came right off the high of the Mario Encyclopedia where Dark Horse were lazy asses that couldn't do basic research and overrelied on the wiki leading to tons of unsourced inaccuracies (Art & Artifacts had shades of this too but it was never this blatant). The Zelda Wiki was being led astray by a series of poor admin decisions for years, so of course it went into deny and deflect mode for this colossal fuckup when anyone with two brain cells rubbing together can see they're full of shit, whereas the Mario Wiki took responsibility and took the opposite approach regarding citogenesis. Hilariously, Dark Horse hired Ian Flynn as "fact checker" for Creating a Champion, so hopefully they've learned their lesson and the upcoming Sonic "Encyclo-speed-ia" might be devoid of this faggotry.

Not him, but I guess if you think of the timeline branches as representing pieces of the Triforce (Zelda sending adult Link back to his childhood as "Wisdom" and young Link being allowed to exist and grow up being "Courage"), then you MIGHT see whatever Din might've done as foreshadowing the scenario in which Ganondorf succeeds in killing the Hero of Time, but it's a stretch.
>>7322718
Indeed they did, and might've all been in Link's boots where the Hyrule civil war led to many more orphans being under the Deku Tree's care, but we'll probably never know if the adult text isn't recovered. Other highlights I didn't see mentioned yet (forgive me if repeated):

I saw the hero dying timeline as miyamoto's headcanon that eventually became official. Miyamoto mentioned a few times that we wanted to have time travel between three eras and in the released OoT rom there is text mentioning that the temple of time was supposed to send you to the past as well but that whole idea was shut down probably because it would be too difficult or take to long.
So to me it seemed that the hero dying timeline was originally supposed to be in the game and probably involved ganondorf going back in time to kill link as a baby or finish the job since he failed before. Thats my head canon anyway. Since there really is nothing in OoT that would suggest a third timeline but we still have one the only way a third timeline really makes sense in the grand scheme of things is if you involve a third era and since one was originally planned things start to become clearer.

My only guess is Nintendo thought they wrote themselves into a dead end, and tried to write in a 3rd timeline as a way to save it, but it blew up on themselves in the end. To be honest a "hero is defeated" timeline could start anywhere. Why start it at OoT? The timeline could easily be a "hero is defeated by majora" timeline.

I've said it before and I'll say it again - all the bad decisions in the official timeline can be squarely put into Nintendo barely knowing what the hell to do with the Capcom / Four Swords games.
>Oracles was likely supposed to be sometime post-Zelda II hence the Master Sword being a relic in a TOTALLY DIFFERENT SPOT than it was left in A Link to the Past and putting a final end to Ganon's otherwise-unexplained revivals in that timeline.
>Four Swords is OBVIOUSLY supposed to take place shortly before Four Swords Adventures, hence the latter's intro text referring to the Link and Zelda of the former by name.
>Four Swords Adventures had an entire (sub?)plot cut featuring the Master Sword and sages judging by unused text, which likely would have explained the game's ALttP graphical style by taking place either before or during the Imprisoning War, but Miyamoto "upending the teatable" / bitched a shitfit and had the game rewritten to be more isolated.
That last one, if left intact, would have likely prevented the whole third timeline from happening, making me inclined to believe >>7324149 might (MIGHT!) be on to something.

I unironically like Oracles where it is(ish). Sure it's divorced from the game's earlier developement where it was supposed to be NES remakes + new Zelda III, but they're obviously more in line with LA's style and so it makes sense for them to take place closer to it in the timeline. Besides it doesn't make sense for Twinrova to have lived for an entire timeline, Ganon probably just wished his mothers back to life with the Triforce at some point as a contingency plan like Link would do with his uncle and the king. A Link Between Worlds has references to Maple so it's too late to move Oracles afterwards without causing problems, you can just say the Oracles Master Sword is not Hyrule's Master Sword. Not sure if you can still set A Link to the Past after the final Four Swords Adventured without significant rewriting since Ganon was last seen sealed in Vaati's place, but agreed Four Swords was reckless.

As much as I like the idea of divine intervention causing a split, that doesn't work for several reasons: 1) there are a different set of sages during the Imprisoning War and it seems likely they would have been remembered in TWW, most likely as the ones who heard the goddesses, 2), it's more explicit in the Japanese manual, but in ALttP's backstory, the sages were recorded as unsure if the Master Sword was just a legend and had to search for proof of its existence, which doesn't make sense in the comtext of TWW but DOES make sense if it was lost during the battle with Ganondorf.

>Link is preparing for his coming-of-age ceremony, in which he will receive his guardian spirit. In the tradition of his people, children receive a fairy from the Fairy Tree when they reach adulthood. This fairy becomes a person’s lifelong familiar. The fairy accompanies the youthful adventurer seeking his or her fortune in the maze-like forest or in the lands beyond. Link’s ceremony, however, is not destined to be a happy one. The Fairy Tree, source of guardian spirits, is captured by a strange creature from the depths of the forest. Link is able to locate his guardian spirit, Navie, and with her help, slay the creature. However, in the process, the Fairy Tree is grievously damaged. As its life force ebbs, the Fairy Tree speaks the words that will shape Link’s destiny.
>“Do not allow the thief, Gannondorf, to claim the Triforce … ” the Tree mystically communicates. “Oh brave one, you must take this sacred stone to a wise man….”
>Gannondorf was infamous throughout the land for his evil practices as the king of thieves. He lusted for the power of the Triforce and searched throughout Hyrule for its resting place, most recently plunging into the forest of Link’s people. Link knew he was in grave danger should Gannondorf find him. He took the sacred stone from the Fairy Tree and set out for Hyrule Castle, the capital of the Hyrulian people. Upon entering the castle, Link is welcomed by the young Princess Zelda, a woman of the Hyrulian royal family about the same age as he. She is well aware of the crisis facing the land of Hyrule. Zelda relates further details about the Triforce’s hiding place, telling Link that he needs to find the three sacred stones that fit into a magical Ocarina, which serves as the key to hidden realm. Link’s race with the evil Gannondorf to find the sacred stones and the hiding place of the Triforce is on!

>2) English Encyclopedia came right off the high of the Mario Encyclopedia where Dark Horse were lazy asses that couldn't do basic research and overrelied on the wiki leading to tons of unsourced inaccuracies (Art & Artifacts had shades of this too but it was never this blatant).
I remember the Mario Encyclopedia controversy, but is it fair for it color people's perceptions of Zelda Encyclopedia if the latter is translated from a Japanese source? Sounds to me like the NintendoDREAM quote is the real issue here.

It's from the Player's Guide, it might not be in any of the artbooks if it's made for western media (though there are some exceptions like Hyrule Graphics / Art & Artifacts getting some NES over FDS Zelda II artwork)

It's actually worse than the Mario one in some ways, just not documented as well because all the same people who cared about calling out the official Zelda Universe website for doing what Dark Horse later did left the wiki long ago for bigger and better things. I'll give you a quick example - one of the bugs that Odolwa summons (the scarabs, not the moths) is called "Odolwa's Insect Minions" in Zelda Encyclopedia. This is from Zelda Wiki, and in fact they tried to defend it by claiming it's their name from the Player's Guide, but looking at the passage in question shows that it's just generically describing both the moths and scarabs in a sentence as "[...]his insect minions[...]" and not naming the scarabs specifically. There are tons of little things like this that add up throughout the enemies, characters and descriptions that it's more exhaustive than Mario Encyclopedia.

The timeline stuff tends to get fucked as time went on

>> No.7325828

Timeline is pretty easy to follow really, I don't know why so many people had an issue with it.
The first five games are simple: OoT-->ALttP->LA-->TLoZ->TAoL. People like to pretend there was confusion over LA and that one interview Miyahon was off his meds vut really game manuals and Nintendo magazines/guides were clearcut on this, they even wanted the town in TAoL to be named after the sages way back in OoT. MM is pretty clearly an OoT sequel so it gets placed there for now.
The next few games is where the problems start to show: the Oracle games have influences from LA & MM, and TWW and its DS sequels all take place after OoT but in a totally different outcome. At this point, OoX generally considered to take place either between ALttP & LA or at the end of the timeline, but people still aren't sure what to make of TWW. The Four Swords trilogy comes and goes: the order is TMC-->>FS->FSA and its generally agreed that TMC takes place before OoT but the others are uncertain. At this point some Zelda fans theorize that there's an alternative universe, and some developer interview emerges that states OoT had "two endings" but some decry it as mistranslated and prefer one timeline.
TP is then yet another game that takes place after OoT. More and more fans are adopting the split timeline "theory" but still think ALttP onwards was retconned to take place further down the timeline. The "cel-shaded"/toon games are usually put in one timeline. Timeline at this point looks like TMC-->OoT in which one split is -->TWW->PH-->ST and the other split looks at best like ->MM-->TP-->FS->FSA-->ALttP->OoX->LA-->TLoZ->TAoL. Then SS takes place even earlier than TMC, and HH is released that shows this common timeline interpretation wasn't that far off in terms of placement except for the third timeline no one except that one weird guy saw coming, thus preserving OoT as the direct prequel of ALttP.

Literally because it goes against their own headcanon. People have been debating the timeline for yeeeaaaaarrrrrssss and couldn't understand the concept of being wrong.

That and the awkward mistranslation of what exactly leads to A Link to the Past.

When Hyrule Historia was first released in Japan but not in English, the downfall timeline was awkwardly translated so people didn't understand the very basic concept of "Alternate timeline where Link dies fighting Ganon" because it was translated very fast and loose as "The hero is defeated, A Link to the Past happens"

Are people retarded? Even if this is a fast and loose translation it gets the message across.
It was a fight to the death, by the time Ganondorf becomes Ganon, "defeating the hero" is nothing short of outright killing Link

It's been a long ass while, but I recall Hyrulians not being quite positive about Gerudo because of the Ganondorf legend thing? Or maybe something else?

Dan Owsen once floated the theory that LA took place inside of Link's mind as he slept for 7 years in OoT, sort of a dream within a dream. Actually, a fan wrote in to his bi-weekly Ask Dan column on nintendo.com asking about it, and he all but confirmed it was canon (in as much as someone who worked on the localization alongside the Japanese team could declare something canon).

>Is it or is not supposed to be a translation/localization of a Japanese book of the same name, a la Hyrule Historia?
See the Mario Encyclopedia - it was a Japanese book too, but the bulk "encyclopedia" part took entire chunks from the wiki. This means things like having the wrong name (one year is a long time for a wiki to start fixing things), or stealing conjectural fan-names or (the wrong!) Japanese romanizations as "English" names despite disclaimers on those pages basically warning them. For reference, the pic is "Odolwa's Insect Minions" in Japanese - it's "sukarabe" (scarab) in katakana, not even a particularly complicated name and certainly not a translation.
>Why was Dark Horse doing any original research if that was the case?
They basically rearranged the whole enemies section and regrouped entire species based on how the wiki did it, which is a betrayal of their bibliography section.
