It's probably because, for better or worse, Doom is a series whose identity, both officially or just in pop culture image, has been meddled by outsiders
Either fans or even just people in general
Doom modding in itself is also important besides just being interesting
You look at the impact of ALWAYS_RUN, Doom 64's ports and a lot more and you realize it might be harder to seperate Doom from its fanbase
Even the nickname "Doomguy" is proof of this

For the sake of clarity, I would like to reiterate again that the Golden Age of FPS began in 1992 with the release of the Wolfenstein 3D shareware and ended in 1998 with the release of Half-Life.

The top ten most based FPS of all time, in no particular order, are:
1. Doom 1/2
2. Rise of the Triad
3. Blood
4. Shadow Warrior
5. Duke Nukem 3D
6. Quake
7. Wolfenstein 3D
8. Powerslave
9. Hexen
10. Heretic

And the most cringe, in no particular order:
Half-Life

I am open to dicussion on this matter if you believe it to be in error.

I agree. Honestly, I really like the new Doom games. Eternal at least. 2016 is a great game but after Eternal it's too slow for me. But the constant spew of repetitive same bullshit that is "RIP AND TEAR BRO!!!" and "YOU CAN'T JUST SHOOT A HOLE IN MARSS!!!!" or "THE LONGER THE ICON-" etc, etc. It gets intolerable after awhile.

That makes me think, different Wolf game btw, but what makes Return to Castle Wolfenstein so good specifically, aside from it being a fast paced shooter? I haven't played it enough to fully appreciate, but from what I know it's essentially a heavily revamped and reinterpretation version of Wolf 3D's gameplay (shooting Nazis and collecting gold and finding secrets).

wad: "Demon Invasion Episode 1 & 2"
creator: DOOMac
url: https://www.doomworld.com/idgames/levels/doom2/g-i/invasion

Description:
Two-map wad for Doom 2 where the first level looks like it served as a test for the second. This guy *loves* dark narrow hallways and Spectres and monster closets...with Spectres. Also uses a trope I hate, switches that unlock doors you can't see and are too far away to really get a sense that they'd actually done anything. In the first level there's a timed switch to an obscured door, but thankfully I don't think he did it again on Level 2.
You actually get a sense that he learned a bit while making the second level, since after the first key I noticed you'd occasionally hit a switch/door combo where he'd leave items behind the door as a way to draw your eye, so good on you.

Dim hallways aside, probably the defining moment of this map is a room with a large crusher placed at the bottom of some stairs that led upward to a dais area where arachnotrons, mancubi, chaingunners and cacos fight. The use of the crusher makes cowering from the projectiles dicey, since you can easily backpedal too far if you're not careful.

One thing of note: the yellow key is present in the raised rampart area near the back of this room, I missed it and wandered around for too long.

"Rip and tear" and "The longer the Icon of Sin" at least work better for me cus they both work as a lore type of thing. The latter being a form of what little story telling there is (thankfully) in Eternal by raising the stakes via reminding you how much of a Hellish creature the Icon is, and the former actually being a somewhat genius way of taking what was once a cheesy tongue in cheek line in a comic book and still have it not be too silly within NuDoom's context (then again, the way "Rip and Tear" is worded doesn't necessarily limit itself to something tongue in cheek; it's easily interchangeable with DoomGuy's rage-fueled character and how he decimates literally everything in his path like the absolute fucking unit he is).

"Hole in Mars" I can forgive as a goofy little bit of comic relief in Eternal, but yeah there are a lot of annoying fuckwads that spew it and the other two lines as a joke/meme that isn't funny anymore. The original contexts of the lines and anything else that's gotten memed to Hell and back I don't have a problem with at all, but you give unfunny people on the Internet an inch and they'll make a mile out of it. It's a common thing with any form of popular media to have fans recite lines ad nauseam, but I'd imagine with something as big of an IP as Doom being rebooted, regardless of how long it's been since a new entry came out and depending how well said reboot is done, you'd expect that such a phenomenon would be especially prominent in the community.

Playing BTSX Episode 1 with Babel and I've noticed a few things:
-BTSX1 is real good. I was nearly filtered at map19 but I pulled through, map20 was amazing and probably my favorite level so far. Currently on 22.
-Babel is REALLY fucking good, hot damn. The balance and speed of everything feels great, Quake-speed switching for weapons has been very satisfying in managing ammo, I like what's been done to balance the shotguns, and all the enemy changes are fun.
-I found out I really like the occasional "somber music" for my fights, like here in 20 of BTSX or levels like Pharaoh in TNT.

It's a *little* bit like Half-Life, only with even fewer (and even shorter) mandatory speaking segments and no tram-ride at the start, also map instances are sort of divided up levels and episodes, and they do score you at the end. It has a good level design with fun exploration, while having a largely realistic aesthetic to it, and the gunplay is pretty fast and intense. The gunplay is actually kind of better than Half-Life's, now that I think about it.
It has some stealth to it, which is kind of so-so, but it tends to work ok in the levels designed for it.

I really think it's about the best possible way you could have taken Wolfenstein from 1992 to 2001. Oh yeah, it has an alright plot to it as well, it's there, but it's not oppressive and largely serves to direct the gameplay (find X item, locate and/or eliminate Z douche, kill your way through this, quietly or loudly, and you'll achieve it), it kind of just rounds out the progression of the levels/episodes. Music is also very well suited, and is excellent at building atmosphere, the undead levels are just a wonderful kind of comfy-spooky, and the action themes are like old war movies, intense and triumphant.

At least some of the boss encounters are also hard cunts to defeat, if you're playing Medium or higher, and the monster design is cool. Most importantly, there's gold bars and gilded goblets to collect, and you can eat chicken dinners and cold cuts to restore your health.

Double Impact was the first one they picked though, they've also added stuff like No End In Sight, Sigil, and Rekkr.

Double Impact was made by RottKing and Ralphis, and they took turns making each subsequent room in a map, which seems like a pretty interesting way to develop levels.

This map was an absolute slog. I don't even think the problem is that it's long in itself, but rather, that the only reasons it is long is that it insists on wasting my time with all these goddamn switches I have to press in every goddamn room, alongside too many detours from what seems to be the main path to make things take even longer. There isn't even much exploration to be had, either, as it's super linear, despite what the automap might lead you to believe. Basically a major case of "long for the sake of being long", and easily my least liked map so far in Eviternity, and honestly, of all 2010's era big name megawads I've played.

The MBF file to start up doom through dosbox should just be called MBF.exe. If you're okay running Doom through Windows, Chocolate Doom is the most pure port, it's basically like the DOS version. Same for Crispy Doom but it runs at 640x400. If you really, for whatever reason, want to run it in DOS(Box), MBF (version 2.04) really is the best port. If you don't know how to set it up just use the preconfigured DOS pack in the OP.
tl;dr if you want the most pure simple solution, just use Chocolate Doom

Am I the only one who thinks Eternal's lore was a mess? I mean the Makyr just come across as some generic videogame alien to me, if you told me they were from a new Mass Effect or Halo I'd believe you. Sure they're based on angels but it just doesn't work for me.
If you just read a plot synopsis of the two games, 2016 still sounds like a retelling of classic Doom, while you read Eternal and it's all fake names.
>After retrieving a celestial locator from the Sentinel world of Exultia, the Slayer travels to Hell to retrieve a power source from a fallen Sentinel known as the Betrayer. He warns the Slayer that humanity's time has come before giving him the power source and a special dagger. VEGA directs the Slayer to a citadel in the Arctic where Deag Ranak has taken refuge, and the Slayer kills him after defeating his guardian Doom Hunters.

>2016 still sounds like a retelling of classic Doom
I still believe this was supposed to be a pure reboot before making the Slayer the same Doomguy when his modelled face isn't even the true "HD Face" people expected for years
You look at stuff like mods, wads, even ugly HD models and realise that nobody takes the "Doomverse" more seriously than nerds that had enough free time and care for over 27 years
Even if the new games have cool ideas, most of it was clearly with a different mind from the ones behind low-tech shotguns or FIREBLU
I know "status quo" might be overused and misused here but that's how i feel with certain bits of the art style and lore

Never really looked into them until Civvie made a series about first game, which got me hooked up. Is this specific pic a fan art, texture or what? A warning about MBF: it changes monster infighting behavior to make them less stupid, and as a result, monster infighting becomes harder.

In terms of actually playing the game and how the game looks and sounds, the only difference between Chocolate Doom and DOSDoom is the MIDIs. Chocolate Doom will use your MIDI player or the digital music packs, and DOS uses soundblaster.

If you're gonna play the IWADs, go for it, but for your first custom map pack, I recommend Scythe, which also runs in DOS

Another thing about cybernetic demons is when you look at the themes of classic Hell and realize Hell might as well be shitting on mankind over tech
Considering how demons are associated with medival shit because of how people view them back then, Hell somehow having tech all along would be demons adjusting to the future
Doom 4 even had its Hell Guardian being made as a "demon for dinosaurs"
As if Hell exists before time and could change shape to fuck up with people from different eras and even cultures
Satan being Doomguy would make more sense if it was Satan saying "fuck it" and deciding to become your ultimate nemisis
Him apparently being that all along adds another layer of "special all along" to Doomguy that shouldnb't be there
The idea of Satan "parodying" you would make more sense
That and how they still didn't get his face right is another problem
Also, i do like if the UAC wanted to make cybernetic demons or even robots pretending just to infiltate and fight against Hell before it backfires, due to Hell corruption
Same if even humans were cybernetic, since that could be possible in the setting

Which setup will prevent the blockmap bug from occuring more frequently in this arena battle vs mancubi?

Right side has three blockmap lines in the room, but two of them are hopefully close enough to the walls that the centers of the wide mancubi will rarely go into the gridsquares on the edges. Maybe I could use the setup on the right, and make the room more narrow to guarantee they will never enter the edge squares. Visually it might look harder but it should actually make the room easier by making more SSG shots connect

The new release looks vastly better, and in general you're gonna wanna use the new one. The only reasons you will need to use EX is to play custom maps that can't run in the new release.

One thing that the new release mimics is the texture filter on the N64
>inb4 texture filter
I like it because it looks like the N64, similar to how I like no texture filter on the original Doom so that it looks like original Doom

The new release does NOT have things like in-game map stats (kills/secrets/items) because the N64 version did not, nor does it have vertical mouse look, unlike EX.

>>7306103
Glaive 2 is a short set of maps modeled after Scythe, that also only use stock Doom 2 textures. It's like 7-ish maps. I haven't played Glaive 1 so maybe try that, too. I rank Glaive 2's difficulty somewhere in between Scythe episode 2 (maps 11-20) and episode 3 (maps 21-30).

Valiant also follows the formula of short levels, but it's not one of those comfy old-school wads at all, if that's what you're looking for

If you still want more old school style stuff first, there is Base Ganymede from 2012, which is a vanilla-compatible Doom 1 megawad. I think the level/sector architecture in that megawad is superb

I included some example playthroughs to help anyone getting stuck, but I'd say play it blind first. I included difficulties, so if you can't beat UV, try HMP, so it'll be balanced across all difficulties

The truth is veterans and newbies alike come and go, so /vr/ projects always have a mix, but the veterans invariably leave, so /vr/ projects can NEVER be too complex or it risks scaring newbies. This is because liquid flats are not what determines whether it damages or not. And not every level calls for them to be damaging either. Sometimes a map uses green nukage because its green and works with the aesthetic the map is going for.
I can understand having an issue if its in the same level, because then the level isn't even following a consistent logic within itself (provided there arent textures that add context). But that isn't nearly as common.

Very cool map, we need more D4V maps. I liked the theme and some of the ideas, but I think you can refine it a bit more.

Here's some honest feedback:

- The startan textures doesn't blend together with the D3 textures imo. Computers and pipes are fine.
- the player can lose the SSG just out of luck (by pressing the buttons on the wrong order). I would open the SSG closet by default to make the mancubi fight more bearable.
- the gun-switch to get the yellow key is way too cryptic. People will not going to shot the button if it's not a easily recognizable pattern (like the Sigil eye).
- I don't know how to beat the cyber-manc room (after the yellow door). Seems to be pure RNG rather the skill-based combat. Idk.
- the teleporting flat next to the berserk item is misaligned
- the cyber-manc setpiece is very cool, keep it. Again, the marble textures breaks the consistency with the D3 textures a bit, but that's not a big deal.
- Level layout seems to have the classic wolf3d "room-door-room" design, which is not very appreciated on the Doom community. If you try to make it more interconnected (with windows and open sectors connected with each other) you can improve the flow of your map. Additionally, you can have more height variance, both for monsters and players.
- there are no cool big arenas or open areas where you can run and kill plenty of monsters. That would be a very nice setpiece for a D4V map in my opinion.

Overall it's a very nice map with good ideas and good monster usage, but the layout can be better. I'm looking forward for this anon. Keep it going!

Thank you for your feedback!
>I don't know how to beat the cyber-manc room (after the yellow door). Seems to be pure RNG rather the skill-based combat
This is one of the things I was afraid of - the monster behavior is all new, so things can come across as impossible and frustrating.

The way you beat that room is SLOW circle strafing. Their projectiles themselves do very little damage, I think 10, but the explosion itself will rock you. So you get up close, facetanking projectiles if need be (but not explosions), then you have the entire back half of the room as one large semi-circle to 'circle-strafe.' It's the exact same principle as the lava room but no lava. Yes you can sometimes get fucked and surrounded. I could add more plasma to melt them faster? The original room had 4 cybermancs and SSG only lol, same with with lava room, but I felt that was too extreme if you didn't know their behavior

Also, in case you haven't, watch the demos, the first two are on UV and show how to clear that room (and every room). The third demo strangely gets an integer overflow, I think a problem that occurs more frequently when using D4V

>I would open the SSG closet by default to make the mancubi fight more bearable
OK. I will make it such that the player cannot access the 4-manc-room without SSG. My idea with the items behind switches is that, I hate picking up items accidentally and wasting them, so I put the items in little niches so you don't do that. That the same idea with the health/armor bonuses - it's impossible to waste those items, unless you already have 200 somehow

> good ideas and good monster usage, but the layout can be better.
Ye all I had were ideas for cool battles, but no idea how to link them together, especially that ugly lift room

The Icon of Sin fight was kind of silly because the cyberdemon instantly started to infight one of the monsters who was behind him so after two or three safe point-blank BFG shots the way was clear to quickly do the switch loop until the boss died. But I can't think of any way to make a cool Icon of Sin fight in such a small space so eh, and at least it was over quickly which is nice because most MAP30 fights take forever and suck ass.

You can make it optional as long as you put the item on a easily visible place. The fact that it's hidden behind a closet is the real problem, as the player can only get it out of luck.

>Ye all I had were ideas for cool battles, but no idea how to link them together, especially that ugly lift room
The level design is basic because it's just doors and corridors. A good tip is getting rid of some of them and increase the size of some rooms to give more freedom of movement to players and enemies. Open it up a bit, mix heigher places with lower ones, try to connect rooms more naturally (without doors in-between), etc. The map already have a lot of tight rooms, so maybe a large arena-like fight would help.

>the gun-switch to get the yellow key is way too cryptic. People will not going to shot the button if it's not a easily recognizable pattern (like the Sigil eye).
I originally added the shootable switches so that my level wouldn't be beatable pacifist, or so that you can't cheese the traps. I'm gonna remove the shootable switches, and add a cybermancubus in the cage by the lava - he will blast the zombies if you don't kill him, clearing the way to beat the level pacifist. It'd be hilarious to see a stroller run (pacifist with no running/strafing allowed). I'll probably need to narrow the lava gaps so you can cross walking

>there are no cool big arenas or open areas where you can run and kill plenty of monsters. That would be a very nice setpiece for a D4V map in my opinion.
Maybe in another level. I think I want to wrap this level up so that I don't use up all my ideas in one level, plus I like short, challenging levels, and I think one more arena will make the difficulty even more extreme and require even further nerfs to make it playable

All of the difficulty of this level comes from the lock-in arenas; open the doors and you can peek-a-boo shoot everything with the SSG. I can add open areas in the form of wide hallways in between the fights. It may sound silly but I'll have to spend time designing hallways and looking at maps to come up with ideas, since this is the art-side and not the combat-side

Map28

A lot of the kills just feel like filler material, you know what I mean? Like just holding left click while I move from room to room. This was way different when the cyberdemon spawned sooner. I remember when the cyberdemon was there much earlier and you had to use the moving pillars as cover, and the enemies effectively blocked your movement. THAT was a good gimmick. The level got de-fanged IMO

Spiderdemon section is just you waitin around for it to get crushed

After the spiderdemon, down to the cyberdemon - the stairs are too narrow for the monsters to get to you, so you just peekaboo shoot to clear that section, pic rel. Also he's tagged as deaf so he doesn't wake up. I think the monsters should not bother you until you get to the cyberdemon/arena fight, because the peekaboo stuff just feels like filler material. Maybe the monster closets only open once you get inside the cyberdemon room and start blasting

The final room with the BFG was underwhelming - imagine that same section but with rocket launcher only. I would put arch-vile + rockets section first, and cyberdemon + BFG section as finale

EITHER make the stairs wider to the monsters walk up the stairs to turn that section into a battle-zone, OR lock up those monsters in the monster closet and open it once you engage the cyber

You don't even need to engage the cybie to leave, he only woke up as I stopped to take a pic

MAP28: The demons that show up at the start with the barons can't go down the stairs (I don't know if this is a GZDoom issue). The archviles are too easy to cheese if you hide behind one of the wooden pillars to reposition them/get a free shot, they should wake up earlier IMO. The archvile that shows up after that part is pointless since there's no way it can hit the player given he's stuck up there. The hallway that comes up after that is full of pointless zombies which serve no purpose besides giving out ammo. I assume the idea was to force the player to escape from the archvile that's up the stairs but you can bodyblock him, wait until he attacks you, go down until the attack stops, go up shoot at him until he attacks again, repeat etc so it becomes another pointless monster. The mastermind section is a complete waste of time. Now the player gets a BFG and the surprise is... more zombies?! Why? They should have been revenants at the very least.
The last room has a fatal flaw which makes it completely non-threatening: you are never stuck in it. In fact, I went outside, grabbed the attention of a couple of monsters, killed them, rinse and repeat until everything but the cybie was dead, and killing it was optional too because I could have run straight to the switch since you gave the player a BFG for no good reason. At the very least keep them locked in if you give them such a strong weapon. Anyway, after that you give them another BFG for some reason which is used to kill 3 archviles and a couple spectres. Yeah, no.

My suggestions would be 1. remove all the BFG from the map 2. replace the mastermind room with something else 3. lock the player into the cyberdemon room and 4. replace the badly used zombies with enemies that make more sense

map30

The level looks really cool.

This section with the up and down pillars is really good. This idea could be further explored with revenants (moving cover). Valiant did something similar in the 14 Angrier Archviles map where you have moving platforms as cover

The cyberdemon fight right after this was really stressful/exciting because of the moving cover but I got it first try

I got tele-rekt by the IOS just now.

>The demons that show up at the start with the barons can't go down the stairs (I don't know if this is a GZDoom issue).
I don't think there would have been enough space to give them wide stairs for them to descend from. That was kind of just the nature of me trying to fit too much into the cramped space allotted.

>The archviles are too easy to cheese if you hide behind one of the wooden pillars to reposition them/get a free shot, they should wake up earlier IMO.
What, do you mean? The wooden pillars there are so you can fight them without being blown away on the spot.

>The hallway that comes up after that is full of pointless zombies which serve no purpose besides giving out ammo.
Actually the zombies are there because I think it's fun to mow down piles of zombies with the bigger weapons (and the ammo). The Arch-Vile was a complete afterthought and not really related.

>The mastermind section is a complete waste of time.
True. I think I had some other ideas for the encounter but it didn't pan out.

>Now the player gets a BFG and the surprise is... more zombies?! They should have been revenants at the very least.
Probably.

Good idea.

>Anyway, after that you give them another BFG for some reason which is used to kill 3 archviles and a couple spectres.
That last stretch was just me wanting to do something weird and unusual looking, and I just stuffed a bunch of monsters in there because I figured it shouldn't be empty.
