Listen anons, heres the deal:
>There is a finite supply of crts
>Cooonsoomers are slowly raising the prices of them.
>Several models are coveted by collectors.
>Rather than being repaired, the monitors are constantly thrown out.
>Recycle centers since 2007 get boatloads of crts delivered to them almost daily
The warning signs are blatant, every cathode ray tube must be repaired regardless of quality. Hoard them, learn the skills to repair, etc. Don't let my life in gaming faggots raise the prices of these monitors. Even if you resell them for free or for 5$ itll keep the market from becoming out of reach.
Quick basic thing. if you have only a horizontal, vertical or just a dot on your screen just clean the connectors with ipa on the end of the tube and clean the connectors on the flyback transformer as well.

Back in the day being a TV repairman was a skill.
You needed to have memorized a fuckton of TV specific knowledge such as common faults for certain TVs, had to have enough guidebooks and schematics to fill an entire shelf and own specialized equipment meant specifically for fixing TVs.
Now some random motherfuckers on the internet who've barely even held a soldering iron think they can do this shit?

They might have an electronics waste section that doesn't actually go into the dump. A lot of variance in how it's handled, even between towns. Call or check if they have a website. But a lot of people have gotten wise to there being a market for the stuff that usually ends up there.

>> No.7302164

No matter how much /vr/lets panic bait there are still enough CRTs just taking up space in people's basements fully functional but just retired to last us indefinitely.

Despite idiots hyping the prices of WEGAs and such from free to $80 this hobby is still relatively very, very small relative to the sheer amount of obsolete TVs out there so we do have time.

If that all goes horribly wrong however we can just move to OSSC or similar scalers.

>Technology will soon be able to replicate CRT response times and black levels

We lost that dream with FED and SED sets. TVs are actually getting worse due to the superficial and pointless pursuit of thinner sets and micro bezels. My 2012 LED Phillips has better blacks and contrast than any current set of equivalent value on the market today. It might be an ugly, chunky motherfucker by modern standards, but it actually has room for adequate backlighting, and it shows.

I brought a brand new 80cm crt in about 2002 for pretty cheap, I ended up throwing it out because it wouldn't degause, now I realize it was a pretty easy fix but it was taking up a lot of room. I had barely used it either and it had component, I had another 50cm crt I brought brand new too in 2005 that I barely used a year and threw out because it wouldn't turn on.
Now I own 6 crt's, 3 tv's and 3 computer monitors but they have signs of pretty high hours.
I have saved 2 crt's from the trash and they are still good, brought another one for $5.

>>7301768
Why not have a laser pointing at some spinning mirrors to project on a coated glass, should look the same as a crt with some treaking.

>>7301956
There was an electronic store that had a dump section behind it, I was able to go at night one time and take a crt from the dumpster. I tried to do it again a year later but ended up not being able to move the crt so I left just as a security car drove by. I still check and last time I saw a crt it was gone by the time I went to get it. I used to leave the crt inside a hot car for a few days to dry it out and remove any spiders.
Less hassle to just to pay the $10 to 20 most people would want for these things.

someone should inform the Chinese that there is money to be made. I am pretty sure many CRTs have been shipped to china for recycling, they could save the good ones and resell them. It would be great if the Chinese could throw together a universal chassis with hdmi support. Modern electronics should be able to drive a CRT pretty
well.

VR overestimates the number of retro gamers looking for CRTs (relative to the amount of used sets available) while grossly underestimating the amount of CRTs sold it would take to restart the economies of scale that would ever put good CRTs (let alone any CRT) back into production

I am not proposing they be manufactured again. I am saying that there may be just enough demand to make it worth while salvaging and reselling existing devices. considering how cheaply you can get stuff done over there, is seems plausible that something could be worked out.

I said this in another thread and I'm gonna say it here. Typically recycle centers will take them. They also have loads of pvms and cctvs that are given to them as well there because while they do deal with people on an individual basis there are also tons of large corporations that simply recycle their stock from their own personal inventory. The one I go to lets you browse freely in the piles of metal and even if you pick out a crt theyll charge you by the pound. for me 30 pounds cost me 4 bucks.

this sounds the same as a CRT but uses a laser instead of electrons; less chance of x-rays maybe? which might mean less need for lead?

How many “CRT pros” do you know of locally? Most TV repair shops nowadays won’t touch them, they’re just looking to make a quick buck by replacing backlights and other cheap components in modern displays. For most of us learning the repair skills ourselves is actually the only option. Basic maintenance isn’t dangerous or difficult if you aren’t retarded.

Incorrect. Modern screens are far superior to 2012 LCDs despite the shrinking bezels. Modern LCDs are capable of higher peak brightness, have full array local dimming and smoother motion. Your 2012 LCD is trash. Unless you meant to say plasma but if so it has different pros cons.

Backlit LED, not LCD. It has better blacks and contrast than any low cost set I've seen in person since, including (more expensive) sets I've bought as gifts. I'm actually dreading the day it dies and needs replacing, because I know I won't be able to get a set as good.

I think anyone would be happy with a non-crt solution as long as it accurately replicates the CRT. Bear in mind that not everyone who wants CRT replacements is a poor bandwagoner. I'd like replacements for vector monitors that work out of the box. There is probably more money to be made producing these for the handful of arcades that need them than all the poorfag children in the world who want a CRT.
